To sign a new 5 year deal at Everton in the next 24 hours (according to Skysports News)

Very Very interesting. I don't think many blades at all rate him even know. Everton must really see a big future in him

He looked decent on Match of the Day. Adkins was very keen on him but then never played him when he got back from the loan spell. He looks a decent prospect. I'll not (again) share my views on him leaving but fair play to the lad he's done well so far.

I never rated him as he didn't produce anything of note whilst playing for us, and that was in the times he could get a game.

Really was a bizarre transfer. But thankfully this time in a good way for us

With that said though, all the best to the lad and I hope he can make a success of it at Everton

Based on what i saw I'm surprised he's been starting ahead of lookman. I didn't think he was quiet up to league 1 standard.

But that said, he has the look of a top footballer and all the right attributes. So good luck to him, hope he pushes on and makes a top flight career

The kid has a work ethic that will take him the whole way. I will always look out for young don and hope he goes all the way to the top.

One of those rare transfers that i think has paid off for us, the player and the other club.

Keep up the work dom - hopefully see you back in a blades kitnin the top flight soon!

You could say that given how poor some of the team looked a year ago we simply weren't seeing the best of him because, as with Coutts, Adkins just wasn't able to get the best out of him. It's worked out for the best regardless...

Im really happy for him, and I will be watching his career with interest. I do feel he maybe one of those where people who aren't keen know are asking why we sold him in 3 years time.

Good luck to the lad

The only time time I saw him in the flesh was Bury away under Madkins. Based on that performance he'd be shot at dawn, along with the rest of the team

I saw him the other week at Everton.. had a quick chat with him big smile on his face when I told him I was a Blade.. he was gutted to not have won promotion with us...

Seems a very humble and down to earth lad.. so glad for him he's getting a chance... probably had more game time with a premier league team this season than he would have with us!!.. bizarre..
But that just shows how good we are!!

We couldn't afford to give him a year here to develop and his fee helped fund our promotion. A win win for everyone, hope he has a great career and remembers where he came from.

Wasn't good enough to get a ticket on the bus tonight.

Everton tie him up on a long deal instead of allowing his contract to get too close to its end

What's the point in that ?

Good luck to the lad but it does surprise me how well he's getting on there. It surprised me that they even signed him.

I always thought there was some talent there but on evidence of his limited game time for us I couldn't see him making it in the PL. Clearly Koeman sees something I don't.

Yeah but don't forget they've also re-signed Jose Baxter !!

Split on this one a bit.

Needed to go based on League 1 needs and the players we have been able to buy and loan. He simply wouldn't have played or played well.

But, he could be the type of player we need in the Championship to push on to the next level.

2 points.

1. Sad we needed to sell any prospective talent to get out of League 1 (and that includes that bloke in Birmingham). But for the record. I blame the wasted money given to Clough and Adkins, not McCabe who did give them sufficient budget.

2. Is playing in League 1 detrimental to the development of real talent, that can only flourish in the Higher levels ? Is there now hope for our other youth?

Overall, good luck to him, he will be welcome back any time and when he goes to Real we can fund the Kop upper extension with the profit... ( ever the optimist)

Turns out Everton gave him 5 more years to stop Arsenal taking him. Obviously plenty see things in him we didn't.

Those who've watched Everton's U23s have seen precisely what his potential is. Apparently he's been outstanding for them.
And he got a couple of great comments on MOTD from Shearer and Murphy. I should guess Shearer knows what he is talking about when it comes to strikers.

The general thought seems to be that he must be an incredible player potentially because he keeps getting chances however no one has actually seen anything to suggest this yet.

Christ, the suggestion in that thread is that he'll be on close to 40k a week.

Still a bit confused by him. Didn't see much of him but none of it was impressive. The Everton fans seem to be saying the same but someone more qualified than us fans obviously does.

For every DCL, if he succeeds, there's a lot more Slews that you wish you'd cashed in on. Wish one of those big clubs had made an offer we couldn't refuse for Diego.

DCL fits the profile of a modern day premier league athlete. His physique is the blueprint that seems have become the most important consideration, obviously you have to be able to play a bit as well, but i get the feeling that natural ability is not the most important requirement.I think that there is a mantra that you can make a footballer out of an athlete, but not an athlete out of a footballer !!
I know that you have to match the opposition for fitness, and that you need to win games, but what gets you off your seat and excited to come and watch your team is progressive attacking football, the game is littered with athletes with average football ability. However,i hope DCL has a very successful career.

I think the issues surrounding SUFC developing talent in this league are two fold.

Firstly the expectation has been an annual promotion push. Its hard to develop players in the first team whilst expecting/needing to win every game. Unless they are exceptional for their age (i.e. the Kyles or Maguire) they are going to make mistakes. The decision has been made that its been better for us this season to cash in on talented youngsters and buy players either at their peak or not far off. When it doesn't work its seen as short termism, when it does its seen as a great bit of business.

Secondly it seems that the quality of the Academy/Development set up is such that the players it produces often feel they can play at a higher level than the club currently occupies.

Other clubs at this level can often give more chance to youth players because they either have no choice (your basket cases like Coventry or small clubs with little budget) or their manager can afford a season of not making the play-offs.

Next season promotion is not a minimum requirement and we'll be operating at a higher level so I'd expect us to develop more decent prospects in the first team.

New five-year contract for DCL at Everton. Fair to the young man.

I - and I'm sure many others - thought we'd had their pants down when they bought him but it's obvious they rate him highly, especially given the first team game time he's had this season. Personally hope he can kick on because I'd like to think we have a nice sell-on clause and it's nice to see an academy product do well.

When you look at how much they paid for Lookman from Charlton (£10million+), did the club maybe under-value him?

Not too many complaints from me though as his fee will have contributed to building Chrissy Wilder's 100 points squad!
