WTF are United playing at?

One factor which seems to have been totally neglected in the immidiate aftermath of the deal is that there is a very good chance that Tonge did not want to pass up this opportunity to play in the premiership. I have seen and heard it mentioned on many occassions that a move would do him good and no doubt the lad has served his time at BDTBL, especially in the face of some very unfair (in my opinion) criticism of late. Blackie is a players manager and i am sure that if Tonge wanted to stay then Blackie would have turned the deal down but to hold a player back who has shown such loyalty to the club and been a very good servant regardless of your personal opinions on his performances would be unfair in the extreme.

I'm disappointed in the comings and goings this season, Tonge and Stead were my favourite players so i was never going to be pleased when both depart on the same day. I now wait eagerly to see what our manager has to say in regards to the deals and am very hopeful (expectant even) that we will see a couple of good loan arrivals when the window re-opens; clubs are always more willing to do business on a loan basis due to the busy xmas schedule.

Good luck to Steady, Tongey and Stretch.

Chuff me!

Back to my earlier post in a different thread about over-reaction to results and/or signings!

Tonge gets the chance of PL football an we get £2m for a player who, in my opinion is worth 2 brass buttons, a week old bus ticket and a half-sucked gobstopper, given recent performances. We have a surfeit of midfielders who can come in a fill the gap and don't start moaning about the squad lacking a creative midfielder now, what the chuff has Tonge created in the last 2 seasons, even compared to our supposed holding player Speed??

I suspect there may be a loan deal already done, but even if that isn't the case there is still enough in the squad.

I personally am disappointed. Not so much that Tonge has gone, but more that he's started every league match so far, and now that he's gone we're going to have to try something new - which will be an unknown quantity. If we ever thought that we might sell him, we'd have done well to have other players starting before him.

I was never one of the people who thought he was crap either, so I think we've lost a good player there.

Finally some sense is starting coming from this thread! Tongue has not performed, apart from fleeting glimpses, for a long time at The Lane. Whatever Blackwell has in mind it has to be better than what we had from Tonge. Happy Days :-)

Does anyone remembers the last match Tonge was exceptional? Must have been april 14th 2006, freekick vs the Shammers, the 1-0. After that average, did not do well under Robson, abit better under Blackwell, but never as good as he could be. It s good he 's gone, more options at midfield from now on.

Well said that man, its obvious great minds think alike or is it fools never differ!!!

Tonge needed the move I dont see the problem really.

I think we have enough even if we dont sign anyone else.

Perfectly put young sir

Good luck to Steady, Tongey and Stretch.

Agreed

Someone speaking the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

   RIGHT im starting to get really fecked off with the downbeat response to our dealings to date in the transfer market. We didnt need to sell any players and blackwell stated that, fine i accept this but lets look at the players that have left since the start of the year.

Alan Quinn - £600,000 to ipswich - Robson was in charge and quinn was never going to get in the team. Robson didnt want him there so Quinny made the right move.

Leigh Bromby - £650,000 to Watford - See above note, simply put he couldnt get in Robsons team.

Geoff Horsfield - RELEASED - See top note and omit "Robson" in favour of "Everyone".

Chris Lucketti - Free to Huddersfield - Again wasnt getting in the team and following the arrival of Ugo, never was gonna get in the team. Good move for him.

Rob Hulse - £1,750,000 to Derby - Was never going to be the player he was after his injury. That and the fact that while injured the club brought in beattie who instantly became number one choice. They couldnt play together and he's moved to a club where he is straight into the first team. Oh how many goals has he scored by the way?

Luton Shelton - £1,000,000 to Valeranga - Brought in with great promise, teased us with his pace and threatened without actually doing much. Again once Beattie arrived and sharp was there too he was never going to get a luck in, unless all our strikers were injured by which time we would be in trouble anyway.

So offset those with the players brought in since the start of the year:

Gary Speed - £250,000 from Bolton - He is the midfield general. No doubts about it. Holds a presence both on and off the pitch that other players can learn from. Yeah he's had off moments but then which united player doesnt. It something that we all should be use to by now. He will commend the middle until such a time that he hangs his playing boots up and continues in the coaching staff where he will still have a positive effect on the team.

Ugo Ehiogu - Free from Rangers - Probably a big surprise to most. definately to me. Wasnt sure that he would stick around, had an awful few first games and was obviously not fit or ready for match games. Blackwell comes in and hes a tower at the back. Probably not a guaranteed starting eleven player, but cover nonetheless. And QUALITY cover at that.

Sun Jihai - Free from Man City - The utility man, a player that has played in pretty much most positions around the pitch. At the back in the middle he confident there. I was surprised by his signing, and to be completely honest was expecting him to be shipped off to chengdu without even seeing the inside of the changing rooms. But he has come in, and played a blinder. Touch is fantastic, confidence seeps out and at this very moment in time would be a strong contender for signing of the summer.

Greg Halford - Season Long Loan from Sunderland - A name that has been knocked around for quite some time. Warnock wanted him more than once. He's here, been on the scoresheet, looks strong and can whip the throws in like bromby used to. So far been played on the right side but can cover easily enough at right back. May need to calm his aggression a little but depending on the agreed fee, at the end of the loan could be a bargain.

Darius Henderson - £2,000,000 from Watford - They needed to sell and we bought. Widely regarded by many of the written press as one of the best strikers in the league. Had injury problems, but is back. Has got on the scoresheet allbeit at huddersfield (Which we needed). His success will all be determined by Blackwells prefered partnership up front. He's strong has the potential to be another QUALITY signing.

David Cotterill - Undisclosed from Wigan - Just what we needed. Pace. Keef isnt the player he used to be, doesnt have the pace anymore although he can still put a good ball in, when his head is in the game. We all knew we needed someone like him, what he added at the end of last season was brilliant we all saw that. Not the finished article by any means but can already do the job we need him to do.

Matthew Spring - On Loan from Luton - Havent seen much of him personally, but blackwell has included him in his teams where ever he has been. So he must have something to bring in. He signed him at leeds, and at luton and now here. Maybe he will work, maybe he will be cover and nothing more. Couldnt say, but he is here and its another player we have at our disposal who will no doubt be on the lower side of the wage bill.

So by and large i think that the players in out weigh the players out considerably.

Which ever way you look at it

in the last week

we have really weakened our squad

Armstrong, Stead, Tonge all gone with no one in

As for the latest players out of the door, weakened the squad i dont agree. I dont mean in any way that they werent an advantage to club, or that they werent good players, but i dont believe that we will miss them.

Armstrong - Transfered to Reading - OK not the ideal move as far as we are concerned, a direct competitor to us but then most teams in the league could be classed as that. We all know how tight this league can be. A decent fee for him too. He wasnt getting in the squad as Naysmith was keeping him out. Inperspective an international player was keeping him out of the squad, funny that isnt it. Naysmith has had a good start to the season, another player who looks much fitter than he did before. Yes he may get injured, but then we have options to cover that anyway. SJH can play on the right to cover and in comes Del again. So i wish him well but not a loss that should be mourned over.

Stead - Loan to Ipswich - A fantastic player, but more a supersub in recent times than a starting forward. No doubt he has commitment and drive and has been a fantastic servant of the club since his arrival. The goal against wigan on the last day of the season was evidence enough of that. Shame it wasnt enough. But lets face it with Beattie, Sharp and Henderson he was never going to be first choice, and he wanted games. So he's out on loan. Ipswich have an option to buy at the the end of that time (01/01/09). Doesnt mean they will, nor does it mean that we will sell. Although unlikely we may keep him, but if he is gauranteed starting lineup at ipswich then thats where he will stay. Best of luck to him.

Tonge - £2.5m to Stoke - Has never regained the form from the cup playoff season. Teased a little at the end of last season but hasnt restarted the new season in the same way. Has lots of potential, but has needed a move to kickstart his career again. I know we dont have another player like him at the moment, but squinny has shown alot of promise so far and i think he will take up this position comfortably with the likes of carney covering the left side. Again best of luck to him but i think we all knew he needed a move.

Dont think we will miss them substantially. I may be proved wrong, they may come back to haunt us. Who knows!!

If we're not going to miss Tongey, why on earth was he played in all league matches so far? If he was someone who Blackwell would be happy to see gone, why did he not choose someone else in his place?

I don't mind the fact that he's been sold - could work out to be the best for everyone - but I wish we'd have tried someone else in his place before now. As it is, against Derby we're necessarily going to have to field a different squad to the one that's conceded two and scored six goals in four games.

I take your point, but the word coming from Blackwell is that the two midfielders he was trying to bring in went to premier league clubs. Who they were we dont know but for that very reason i think we will have a loan signing in by the time the Derby match comes around

And if we don't? If they go to other clubs?

All I'm saying is that we should have tried something different if he was considered surplus to requirements. And if he wasn't, well we shouldn't have sold him.

I'm not as unhappy as I might sound, by the way - just worried that we've now upset the balance of a team that was playing pretty well. 7 points from 12 is promotion form...

I still blame warnock for this, Koumas was available 2 years ago and he didnt go for him, still haunts me that.

True we did miss the boat with regards to him.

Although had Warnock signed him I could see Warnock falling out with someone like Koumas.

Yeah but Koumas has hardly set the premiership alight has he.

look, Kevin Blackwell is a pro football manager, none of us are, taking a first team player out im sure he will have something tied up for another player, and i would it could be announced today, or a season long loan next week, you cant start moaning when you dont even know whats happening yet, if we are in this position against Derby then maybe yes, it could be a bad move, but we have players who are more than capable of stepping up in Hendrie, or maybe Monty then we can start cotts instead of halford,

just wait and see

speed is class at mopping up, winning the ball picking a pass,

Exactly! He is good at mopping up every time Tonge lost the ball.

Tonge has done nothing this season but look like a headless chicken. I said on Saturday Quinn would be better along side Speed. We have carried Tonge this season.

I'll agree at the end of last season Tonge looked better, but this season he hasnt done anything worthy of a praise.

He has no pace, he cant hit a target if it was 12ft by 12ft and 3 yards out, he can't seem to move forward, and he can't pick a pass.

In my eyes 2 Million is a good deal.

As for Tonge being our most creative midfielder that is the best joke i've heard since Wednesday got relegated.

And yet he started all four league matches, in which we only lost one (and that was by an unfortunate goal in extra time).

I'm not saying we shouldn't have sold him; I'm just saying that if KB thought of him as expendable, we maybe shouldn't have started him in every match up to now. Maybe we should have moved Quinn to the centre and let him find his feet there, rather than moving him after he's getting used to playing out wide.

I'm not too bothered about Tonge leaving as i think long term it is the best for both parties.

The thing i am worried about is that there was nothing in place to replace Tongey.

Unless of course there is a loan imminent for a replacement with a view to a permanent deal in Jan.

I think Hendrie will play in his place for the meantime

If Hendrie is better, perhaps. He's had a septic foot.

Also, you'd have thought that he might not be match sharp, given his limited run-outs this season.

Well said mate Exactly how i feel about the situation i wouldn't have minded Tonge going but the timing of it is scandalous without a replacement.:shakehead:

To be fair, we didn't have much of a choice over the timing, and we may have a loan signing coming in, in anycase. To be fair, we don't even know how late Stoke made their bid!

I think that, even though I think we're all a little disappointed, we just have to sit this one out.

Let's face it, it's not like last year when all we could see was a club in free fall at this point in the season.

Both spot on posts
Tonge has been shocking- the game on Saturday really highlighted it, at points I thought people were avoiding passing to him. Hopefully Hendrie sorts his infected foot out.
By midfield would be

Cotterill Speed Squinn Hendrie

but maybe we might get a loan player in

Ipswich away under blackwell. He was brilliant in that game from what I remember.

Tonge is the only player we had capable of the wednesday away, West ham home, Ipswich home etc performences. Just a shame he couldnt do it on a regular basis.

Tongey will go down as unfullied talent, I was completly convinced he would play for England, he had everything. I look at David Bentley, where he was at norwich on loan and where he is now. Tonge could have been that.

Stoke will not improve him as a player, he should have gone to West Brom when he had the chance.

Yeah but Tonge has always been golden boy for Warnock and Blackwell.
Good responce.

Good responce.

Good Spelling :D

Tonge's gone, someone will take his place and prob get abuse from parts of the crowd like any other player does.
Monty will reappear in the squad and get insults thrown at him before he touches the ball as usual.
Be reight.
