In todays Daily Mirror, it says Warnock was accused by Ron Atkinson of telling United players to break Trevor Francis's leg. Unless my memory is playing tricks on me. I'm fairly sure Warnock and Atkinson were never managing in Sheffield at the same time . A quick Google search and Francis played for the filth 5 years before Warnock was our manager. Another piece of sloppy journalism, or is there really a section of press who like to slag us off at any opportunity.

They may be getting confused. The name escapes me but one manager did accuse Warnock of encouraging our players to break his leg.

If I remember right it involved Warnock doing some kind of stamping motion.

No idea if there was any truth in it, but I wouldn't be wholly surprised.

May have got my wires crossed, but was it with West Brom and the Ginger Nut, in the war at the Lane?

I'm pretty sure it was a game at Reading. That pillar of rectitude Wally Downes was with Reading at the time:

In January 2007, Downes was involved in a touchline scuffle with Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock after he accused Warnock of telling his players to 'break legs'. However Warnock said: "I made the kicking gesture to tell the referee that Steve Sidwell's tackle on Chris Armstrong had been the worst of the game. Fortunately for me, the referee heard exactly what was said and confirmed that." Downes was charged with improper conduct for his role in the affray. Link

Yes, wasn't he mimicking someone going in to stamp one of his Notts County players (Tommy Johnson?) and it was interpreted as Warnock ordering a player to break an opponent's leg? Always seems like a ridiculous suggestion.

I don't think it was unusual in the 80's and 90's (and earlier) for players and managers to encourage a more aggressive approach. So perhaps it was when Warnock was at Notts Co.

Break his leg perhaps implied to "do a job on him"

Players doing a job on other players was common. I remember one of the FA cup games v Man U in the early 90's - Kammy, Hartfield, Bradders, Hoyland and Hodges had either got an instruction or they took it upon themselves to kick the shit out of Man U (Cantona?)

Its only in recent years that the game has developed morals and a conscience, probably since tackling has been all but outlawed.

Hughes. He was giving it back too. Old school.

Great description of Wally Downes !

Yeah think that was another game, David Tuttle wasn't it?

I remember in that period we seemed to draw them every year (football gods)

In the context of the period it was acceptable and i loved it. Lots of Battles around that time -
Bradders v Pearce. Bradders v Shearer two that stood out

Especially if the plural of rectitude was actually, rectum :)

In that period we played them twice a year in the league as well as the FA Cups. I don't remember Tuttle getting involved with Cantona but it may have happened. Might have been the one I was in John Street for and some of their boys were in. It was all a bit tense and I was a bit overhyped expecting it to go off.

It was the Leeds game after we had been promoted. He was sent off (I think by Graham Poll) for apparently telling one of our players to break Gary Kelly's legs

It was Hughes v Tuttle think hughes got sent off, Hartfield sent off the year before.

The League game was the first premier league game wasn't it, Deano Double and beat them with deano scoring the first Premier league goal

Man U fans were in John St West, police ended up putting them in the pen next to the BL Lower

That was the cup game vs Manure in 1990. There was 36k there and mancs all over the shop. I remember the plod pulling them out and moving them over to the empty pen.

ah it wasn't the Prem League season? Thought i was older than that

That sounds about right. I was in the kop fr the cup game v Man Ure in 90 (lost 1 nil McClair winner I think) and I recall the Man Utd boys being pulled out of John St West. There were quite a few of em that day if I recall and London Road was a little bit busy ;) I was in John St West for the FA Cup game in 93 when Hodges did the business and I don't recall a single Manc in with us that day. They had obviously learned their lesson. There were fkin loads of em on London Road that day though before and after the game and it was an 'interesting' day all round.

Ron Atkinson was associated for a while with porkies, just reverting in his dotage

couldnt be worse than his kick the n*gg*r comments Id say

It happened more than once because I wasn't at that cup game due to having absolutely no money.

Just an opportunity to have a pop at us and Warnock just before the Oinkers play Cardiff.

That wasn't exactly what he said but yeah, he probably should STFU about what other managers say.

paraphrasing he more or less said he was lazy and needed one up the jacksie
throw away comment he said
but warnock meant it did he , perception a bummer aint it
Warnock never said owt to Big Fat Racist Ron when Warnock was at United. He's just making it up. Senile old orange faced twat.

Francis's broken leg was during a game Birmingham against us. Eddie Colquhoun was tackling him, and Francis wussed it according to Eddie..

Imagine my dismay on opening this thread only to discover that it wasn't about a richly awaited gentleman's jousting contest between two former custodians of the managerial hot seat in the divide between the two main Sheffield football league clubs, taking place on the under card to support the Kell Brook v Errol Spence fight on the 27th May :(
