Wednesday Night

Can you believe it?

Last week I was asked to work in Bristol all this week.

I explained that Sheff Utd had a vital promotion match Tuesday night against Coventry and I'd already bought a match day ticket. So I was asked to go down to Bristol first thing Wednesday morning instead.

Then over the weekend I realised we are playing on Wednesday not the normal Tuesday night.

My company have now booked the train and hotel so it means I'll miss the Cov game and will now have to sign up to Bladesplayer so then I can listen to the live commentary in my hotel room.
Throw a sickie. Next problem please...

Blades 3 Watford 0 May 1st 1971.

Pretty sure we needed something from that game to make sure of 2nd place - can still see the crowd on the pitch at the end and my Grandad shouting at them to keep off the cricket square.

Think Woodward and Reece scored, Currie got the other? Still see the shape of his body as he volleyed home, the ball got stuck between the net and the stanchion......one of my favourite goals.

Oh, that's awful. Shocking. I feel so bad for you. Can I have your ticket? ;)

I'm working until 8:30 and will be running down from the town hall, so big queues and delayed kick-off would be appreciated...

Woodward pen, Reece 2. The goal scored at the Lane end as you described was Reece's first and our second goal. Our third was at the Kop End when Dearden set up Reece a simple chance but it hit the post but he recovered quickly to head in the rebound

Thought the same until last week when Revolution explained that one of our promotion rivals (cant remember which) had lost their midweek match which meant we were already promoted before the Peterborough match

Fair enough, I know they had a game in hand with a couple (for us) to go, but can't honestly remember the chain of events :)

Did Similar....agreed to work overtime on Wednesday without realising United were playing then instead of Tuesday.
Bugger

We beat Rochdale 3-1 on 4 May. Peterborough lost 2-1 at Hereford the following night, which promoted us.

When we beat Peterborough on the 8th we were already up.

Got a feeling you'll have the Flu on Wednesday morning when you wake up! ;)

No, I'll be driving home.
I will then sit with a glass of JackD and contemplate the table on Teletext for a good half hour (pretty much as I did on Saturday night). It's amazing how relaxing it is to see "1. Sheffield United" at the top and then count the number of points down to the rest.

Staring at the League table, I'm relieved I'm not the only one who does that. I keep going back to it like I'm obsessed

Currently in France until Bratfud game but heart and mind will be at S2. Don't want this season to end

The "foreplay" to Dearden setting up Reece was a classic. TC had the ball on the wing alongside the JS terrace and was indulging in a bit of showboating. Dearden was in space for what seemed like an eternity but TC thought it a better idea to dribble round two or three defenders and stop after beating each one to blow kisses to the terrace. Dearden was going blue in the face screaming for the ball before TC condescended to re-join the football match and duly dropped the ball on Dearden's feet who then set up Reece. Tell me you haven't got a smile on your face!

:D

What I could remember of the goal before watching the DVD of the match shown in the 1971 promotion reunion evening (Foxy and Linz were there too) 6 years ago was that Reece scored the 3rd goal at the second attempt despite that the first attempt was a sitter but couldn't remember the built up to the goal. It was on the DVD when I realized that Dearden assisted the goal with the keeper grounded. There were one or two defenders on the line when Reece had his first attempt but in the second attempt, the defenders were on the ground after being wrong-footed by the first attempt

Already sold mate.
Went down to the ground to get a refund this lunchtime and order some returning after 7 years season tickets. The queue was just pass the shop but moving really slowly, probably a 90 minute wait.

Anyhow I was lucky someone in the queue next to me wanted 1 ticket for Wednesday night so he gave me the ticket price with my membership discount off it. So only had to wait 10 minutes to get a refund. Will order the season tickets over the Internet.

Glad you got sorted mate.
I have actually got a ticket, I was just trying to make light of your predicament :)
Gutted for you that you can't make it though :(

In trying but I don't think I'm going to be able to get it off work.

I finish at 8:15 near Meadowhall. What would be my best course of action to absorb as much of the hype as possible?

Before we scored, Scullion secured a close season transfer to us by pinging one off the bar from outside the box at the Kop end, did he not?
Won't say much about his effectiveness on grass, there never seemed to be enough of him, but he was a match winner in those 5 a side tournaments they used to have on telly!

Anyone who wondered what type of player Stewart Scullion was, you can see it in the below video of him scoring against Man U. The trouble was that when he played for us his resulting shot usually went over the bar

Another happy memory of that game was the fact that it was reffed by everyone's favourite, roly poly Roger Kirkpatrick. We were hanging around to see the players outside afterwards, when he came striding out, got into his souped up Capri and went belting off down John Street to the sound of 'I Wish I Was in Dixie' on his airhorns!
