Jack O'Connell

His determination and drive that pretty much created our second goal, quality!

There was some discussion a while back as to whether O’Connell was as good as Maguire was for us. There are striking similarities in the way they play but the consensus was that he was still some way off Maguire’s level. Whilst I still think Maguire is ahead of him (will surely play for England soon. Can’t believe he didn’t last week), O’Connell was absolutely phenomenal last night and probably gave his best performance in a blades shirt (I also had him down as our MoM at Oldham). All of the back 3 were impressive but O Connell won so many balls in areas that were dangerous to us. He cleared his lines effectively often managing to retain possession. He went on a storming run just before our second and he got himself a goal. A real complete performance. If we still had Maguire, the thought of playing them as a partnership for many years to come would be absolutely mouth-watering.

Not very 'striking' from where I sit.

O'Connell has far more pace and can beat a man and burst through into the box. Maguire had superb close control when dribbling but no pace.

Both decent in the air although JOC attacks the ball better in both boxes.

Maguire had a beautiful delicate long pass in his locker, which I haven't seen from JOC. Maguire always seemed bigger and heavier, but slower.

Apart from the above they were very similar as both wore a read an white shirt and had heads and arms and stuff.

Both very big, strong, young centre halves. Both comfortable on the ball. Both capable of driving runs out from the back to start off attacks. Both very good in the air. Both chip in with a few goals.

JoC can cross it.

Also, he actually celebrated his goal last night:

Very disappointing Jack. What happened to the traditional jog back/handshakes?

http://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/foot...ck-o-connell-watch-all-of-his-goals-1-8465465 <-- An article I wrote today for the Sheffield Star, on Jack O'Connell's career.
Louis, I don't want to criticize a young man learning his trade as I have 3 kids myself around your age but if you are going to publish articles you really, really need to work on your punctuation and sentence structure. No one minds the odd mistake, we all make them, but yours are so numerous as to make it difficult to read. Could I suggest a book called "Eats shots and leaves", I think it would really help you.

Good luck with the career & UTB

He was awesome tonight, and just came in ahead of coutts for man of the match. We kind of lost midfield a little bit when Duffy went off though. Courthers is even worse than coutts for tackling!

I like Sammi but he was average at best the other night, and sadly I have to agree with your last sentence, an area for some improvement.

Would rather play with none than Bringtheevertonplayerback.

Just cannot understand the logic of some fans even mentioning Jags in the first place . He is not in the equation and never will be . Also glad it's OConnell we signed and not ELL . He can go back to his parent club Wolves for me.

Wilder will build again. It's what he calls evolution .

One the things we've been crying out for is the building of a squad in which there are improving players. The money we've spent on ageing footballers and/or plain rubbish has been frightening. At the end of last season I could only think of Che Adams who was increasing in market value.

But now Wilder has given us this lot who are all very much on the up...

Moore, JOC, Freeman (re-invented), Fleck, Lavery, Carruthers.

With the right purchases around them, these players could become the basis of our next 5 years.

My only fear is that we'll struggle to hold on to JOC once he's in the Championship and playing the way he is now.

Very likely but for once I'm confident CW has already considered this and has scouts monitoring potential replacements. Our biggest problem has been our failure to recruit replacements for players we've sold like Maguire and Murphy.
Losing your best players is inevitable for almost all clubs apart from Barca, Real and Bayern but some clubs are able to cope with it better than we have in the past.

He was my MOM the other night as well. What a player. Oh, and whilst we are on the subject of Harry Maguire, this numpty I was unfortunately in the same room as at the weekend stated that it's "a certaintity" that he's signing for that mob at S6 in the summer. Deluded twat.

Agreed. I'm certain he will bring in another centre-back though, and not as back up. We have let in too many goals for real comfort. I think Tufty will see a Championship quality "kingpin" CB as a priority. I went off Byron a bit on Tuesday. Hanson gave him a torrid time, as of course Hanson does to many.

We need a Championship "Shawcross". Don't ask me for a name!

Kevin Gage in the Star today has a very powerful analysis of JOC's performance, and has him as MOM. It was certainly no bad thing that he got to the header in for the first goal before Hanson - he is a more powerful header of the ball. And did I interpret correctly the 'incident' with a ball boy near the end - he seemed to refuse to pick the ball up himself for a throw-in, and insist that the lad walk as slowly as possible before handing it over. We can't accept that, can we?;)

A championship Shawcross is effectively a new Morgan. All Shawcross has ever done is head it, leather it and foul people. Solid defender, awful footballer.

That was true once, but he's so much better now. A sort of Shawcross Redemption....

Sorry.

Southampton being a prime example of that.
