I'd say its about time they did a singing section. Times have moved on from the terracing days and the fans those terraces created are probably getting on a bit now (no offense) and thus the originality of the songs and singing/atmosphere in general has reduced. It will be interesting to see how the atmosphere changes next season when there are actually some away fans in the away end.

But why not set up a singing section - those who want to sing and create an atmosphere can do exactly that, those aren't bothered can stay where they are. Would make sense to use BL Upper Tier next season or G and F on the Kop.

Those last five minutes of getting behind the lads will become more evident now as we enter the final stages of the season and the realisation of that promotion is almost assured.

The issue with a designated singing section is that it's likely to attract the... putting it mildly... "giddy kippers" who've been causing trouble at away games.

For this reason, it would need to be as far away from visiting fans as possible lest we end up with BLUT closed again.

It would make identifying the cokeheads exuberant youth easier though.

I know, if only we had been here before.

Remember Bassetts team getting promotion to the old first division. Games over Port Vale and Oxford where we should have won easily you could have cut the tension with a knife.

Three reasons that people keep harking back to 'the good old days'.

Back then, the crowd wasn't one of those mythical ones where everybody joined in the 'communal singing'. Apart from the kop, nobody thought of singing. I remember a top-tier game against Arsenal in (I think) 1968 and the crowd was just 14k. The gaps on the kop were vast. Society has changed. The kop was 'working class' and the seats were for the 'bourgoisie'.

The atmosphere was good at the Scunthorpe and Bolton games this season because they brought decent followings which 'spurs on' the home fans.

Apart from Charlton only bringing 500-odd fans (and never raising a chant all game), Saturday was tense. It's never good to go into the last 15 minutes just one goal in front. With a ref. and linos. as poor as those we had, the margins for error are too tight. I stayed behind after FT on Saturday, and the applause the kop gave (and the appreciation the players showed) was marvellous.

I'm sure some people do have a valid reason, but on Saturday people were streaming out of the Kop as the time added on was announced. I've seen the analogy before, but it really is like sitting through 90 minutes of a film, then getting up and walking out before the last 3 minutes and checking the ending on the internet after.

I can understand it to a point if we're getting a hiding, even though I wouldn't leave early myself, but at 2-1 up and in the middle of our most important run of home games in recent years, why do so many leave early?

It's not just a Bramall Lane thing either, they were piling out of the Etihad early yesterday too at the Man City game. 1-1 in what was probably the best PL game I've seen in quite a while and you up sticks and leave before the end. Bizarre.

Of course, and I'm not sure how my post suggests I don't understand that people of lives outside of United, myself included. Like I said I'm sure some people do have valid reason, it just seems to be a high proportion in my opinion. It clearly matters to you, but I can't imagine that volume of people are bothered about getting home a bit earlier for the sake of missing potentially the most important part of the game.

A pal of mine who is from Northern Island got tickets in the away end to watch his national team play England at Old Trafford. The Irish were all singing chants to well known tunes but with new appropriate words.(not P.C.) I asked the fan next to me how thousands of people were able to sing the new words and he produced song sheets with the new words all, I might say, on Green paper. The atmosphere was electric and the new song chants really got the supporters going.
Do we need a song writer with a printing press and a supply of red paper?

Not really sure how you can judge though? I've genuinely no idea how many of our current support lives more than an hour's drive away, how many travel up from London, or down from the north. The roads seem to be fucked these days, it takes ages getting anywhere. Or where they have to get a train and what time the last connection is.
I've no idea how many have other things to do, or how important these things are.

I'm sure there are some who just get bored and fancy a pint before the rush but I'd guess a fair amount of those leaving before the end when it's 2-1 do so because they have to.

I'm afraid as a currently 30 week pregnant woman who helps an unsteady on her pins soon to be 80-something year old woman out from the front of the South Stand, we leave early because if we aren't at the steps down to the concourse before or just as the final whistle sounds, some of the "gentlemen" we encounter don't have the most patience and this manifests in pushing and shoving. I also don't have the bladder capacity to sit and twiddle my thumbs in my seat for half an hour while all these gentlemen move off.

When you see us come out and play the first 20 mins like that I think it worried a few people, myself included. The great thing is we came through it but we weren't at full tilt for most of the game and fans are nervous

I wasn't criticising anyone in my first post, though looking back it probably does come across that way. Like I said I know some people, yourself being a prime example, have extenuating circumstances, and I suppose I was more interested in what the reasoning is for those who have always done it as a habit rather than people who do it for an obvious benefit.

I think fans leaving their seat early is more of a kop problem, having a season ticket bang in the centre of the kop meant if I stayed in my seat to the final whistle it would take me 10 to 15 minutes to get out of the ground. If you timed it right you had to leave your seat just before full time and you could just be down to exit as full time was blown. This season I am moving around and find in the south stand and Westfield corner the amount of people leaving their seats early is a lot less because these stands empty much faster than the not fit for purpose kop.

A lot of people are physically incapable of going 45 minutes without a piss, a pint or a smoke so I probably put it down to that.
