I'm switching to the Blades (Wednesday fan)

Hello Blades,

I put this on Bladesmad, and was encouraged by posters to stick it on here also:

My future Father in Law (a Blade) has just been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

To raise money and awareness for prostate cancer (and for a bit of a laugh at my expense), I'm taking part in Football Aid on his behalf... For the Blades...

For anyone who's not aware of Football Aid, what this basically means is that I have to wear full United kit and play at Bramall Lane with a bunch of other blades fans and two United legends (yet to be announced)...Yes, I did grit my teeth whilst writing that.

In all seriousness, it's like they say, cancer has no colours, and the recent announcement of his illness has certainly put things in perspective for me.

I played in this in the Michael Brown season soz The player managers were Beesley and Gayle ,it was brilliant. You will be advised not to go mad and blow yourself out after 5 minutes but you still will. Beesley tackled me and Im still winded 14 years later . Good luck with it ,Cancer is a bastard.

My dad was 70 when he was diagnosed with prostrate cancer following a routine check at his GPs. Later transpires he had beeen getting up for a pee in the middle of the night which can be a sign. Once confirmed they put him on hormone injections, nothing else, monitored his PSA hormone levels and told him he'd probably die of something else first, which he did, of heart failure 15 years later.

My wife has had breast cancer for a decade now and touch wood hormone treatments are still keeping it at bay. No one knows unless I tell them the treatment is that good.

Just shows there are lots of posible out comes with these things, not all as negative as people first think when they hear its the big C, so tell him to be positive and enjoy life as best he can.

Great gesture. If it helps, I was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer June last year. After being told it was in my lymph system further tests found it was isolated and after an operation I was back at work within 2 months and have at least a 95% chance of it never returning. If they catch it early the chances of a full recovery are high. Fingers crossed for your Father in Law. Cancer doesn't always mean a life sentence.

It's amazing how many people on the message boards have either been treated for a form of cancer themselves, or seen a loved one be treated.

It almost makes a drab 2-0 loss to Reading seem less important (I'm still mad though!).

Good on you, i lost my missus to Cancer 10 years ago, so know only too well the pain and devastation it brings. As you say it does truly put things like football rivalry into perspective.

I am playing in the football aid game, so look forward to meeting you. I have done it a few times, it is a great experience and really well managed. As has been said your eyes will really be opened when you see a progressively developed, well maintained stadium!

My dad is a prostate cancer survivor too. He had backaches and for once in his life went to the docs to get checked. Saved his life. He's fighting fit again now and I've been for a check myself. The message has to be give yourself a chance and get checked out, ignoring it doesn't make it go away.

Please say good luck to your father in law, my dad (a long serving blade) was diagnosed with it late last year.
