Pass Pass and Pass Again

We have seen over the years the positive or negative effects that certain managers can have on players.
Wilder is a Bassett, Warnock type manager with the added bonus of good football thrown in.

Best of both worlds
I think this alone will help us next year, players like playing for Wilder and you can tell

Wilder is one of Bassett's boys; he won't make wholesale changes, and won't need to. This squad is largely future-proof and will be successful in the Championship. Bassett stuck with the bulk of his squad to gain back-to-back promotions. To those Blades fans who whittle about our defensive frailties and say we'll need a new defence for next season - we conceded 54 goals in that 1988/89 promotion season; so far we've conceded 42, so probably won't be that much different by the end of this season. You can only judge football players and teams in their own time zone of course but this squad is considerably slicker on the ball than Bassett's team, and I think this squad is stronger. We may or may not be over-reliant on Billy's goals, but Bassett was very fortunate to have Deane and Agana to play his style of football.

It was brilliant play and had the crowd showing our appreciation and I tell you the link play near the end of the between Carruthers and Fleck was also outstanding and needs a mention

It was...everything went through Fleck in the first half, almost everything in the second. Him and Carruthers seemed telepathic at one point and that's how the move for the penalty came about. Interestingly Carruthers had been denied a free kick for a much more blatant foul in the same place but ten yards further back a few minutes before, for an almost identical interchange and run

Personally, I thought the previous challenge was nothing and Samir just chucked himself to the floor.

Watched it 17 times already. The Freeman thing is pure genius . Who the hell would mark a right wing back in the 6 yard box.

So did the ref....just how it seemed to me...I thought the penalty was more likely to be a dive (shhh) and I'm not sure if it was in the area either
For the first one, my instant reaction was to yell at Samir "stay on your fucking feet!!" :D

Re the penalty, I initially thought it was just on the line so was expecting a free kick rather than a penalty.

Almost as good as this...

Almost as good???

They didnt score.. FAIL!

The mighty Blades scored... WIN!! :)

How many other managers would allow their right wing back make a front post run at the left in open play ?

Mentioned this to my old man when i spoke to him earlier about the game and i said i reckon 6 or 7 of Freemans goals have come from inside the 6 yard box?
Phenomenal desire from a wing back and also highlights the trust that Wilder has in the players and the freedom he lets them play with. Such a joy to watch

Here's a little skit of my reactions and emotions as the move and coup de gras played out before my very eyes last night..

The initial passing phase..

'Easy easy don't give it away in our own half!!!'

To that pass out wide and then to Billy then doing his shimmy round the defender on the goal line..

The killer pass and goaaaalll... you kinda knew it was coming but it was still mindblowing..

What youve just seen sinks in and registers a bit more and you just look at each other going..

Top GIF work.

On the line is a penalty. The lines on a football pitch are part of the area they define.

I don't know what the fuss is about. It was a clear foul and obviously in the area. That's a penalty.

If big bullying defenders didn't grab, pull, trip and kick, tricky attackers, no one would ever fool an honest referee with a dive.

Fantastic movement from Freeman. You can see him early in the clip holding his position on the right side in his own half, then as the ball gets played to O'Connell out wide, he's in the middle but still way outside the area. Then he times his run to the near post to perfection.

Fantastic stuff. How Wilder and Knill have achieved this in such a short space of time is phenomenal. Credit to the board, management and playing staff.
Fixed that for you. All the board have done is issue a reduced budget (as confirmed by Chris himself) in the hope that Wilder could work some magic. Luckily for them, the bloke's done just that.

The Hoofers can't resist a little dig, can they. Bring back the "3 pass rule". They may be in retreat but they'll go down fighting. It could turn ugly...or so they hope.

I'd say the observation was probably more appreciating the effectiveness of the high press as that's what brought about most of the goals Bergen Blade refers to. Pressing high up the pitch, win the ball in and advanced area, a pass or two and goal. It's been a big weapon in our arsenal this season along with our ability to retain the ball and play attractive passing football.

On the flip side, I don't think we have a player with the ability or potential to go as far as Brian Deane. If we got a striker like that, we could potentially launch a serious assault on the championship.

Yes that's all the board have done, you're right
