Several days ago, I posted this comment using the box at the bottom of Neill’s article:-

“An interesting article Neill. Regarding Clough, would it not have been possible to go and see him and ask him why he had bombed you out? I remember him saying on the radio that certain players hadn’t been playing to his instructions. If it was a simple disagreement over tactics, it’s a great pity that you couldn’t have discussed it and sorted it out between the two of you”.

A reasonable enough comment and question I thought but it hasn’t appeared on his page yet while several others that express unquestioning admiration for him have.

I feel I can be less polite to him on here and state that it's bleeding bloody obvious why he was dropped by Clough.
It's because he was repeatedly ignoring team instructions and dropping too deep.
Clough specifically stated so on the radio (after 3-5 away at Swindon) and if I know the reason, it beggars belief that Collins didn't also.
Having brought him back in to the fold, Adkins then "bombed him out" later citing a very similar reason of a "player ignoring instructions".

The dropping deep was just to cover his own shortcomings and pressured thexrest of the defence. It was clear to see as well. But nothing ever seemed to be his fault.

We sacked collins?
No, Adkins but I think we encouraged Collins to fuck off to the USA by giving him some money. I think we paid him off but I don't know what proportion of his outstanding contract sum it was.
It seemed at the time Adkins was glad to see the back of him. I was.

Worth remembering that this wasn't done at a time when we had a wealth of defenders. We went through games with players out of position just to make sure Clough proved whatever point he had with Collins.

Yes, we needed better than Collins, but at times through Clough's reign even he would've been an improvement.

Just read this entire thread, looking for anything related to Tampa area/Florida swamp land. Nothing.

My own fault, I thought the thread was called "Neil Collins Bog".

Going to have to give in and finally start wearing reading glasses.

Merry Christmas all.............

I very recently found myself in a situation where I was frozen out at Sheffield United having been a mainstay for the previous three seasons. I could see the writing on the wall long before Nigel Clough finally made his move and banished me from the first team squad. I could read him like a book and, if the truth be told, Clough knew that. There was no bust up, no argument, no fall out. I wasn’t just dropped to the bench or the stand I was made persona non grata. My ticket to Siberia was well and truly ordered.

There was no explanation from the manager and as he had the local media in his pocket they never pushed for answers. Social media went into overdrive – “what has Collins done?”. “He punched the manager?”, “He persuaded Maguire to leave?” and some other ridiculous suggestions that do not bear thinking about. It really did get that out of hand. All the fans wanted was a logical explanation and there certainly wasn’t one forthcoming. If the truth be told there wasn’t one that could be given. The question wasn’t why was I not in the first eleven as ultimately that is the manager’s prerogative but more importantly why was I bombed completely having played almost 200 games consecutively with a flawless disciplinary record on and off the field?

All this time I had to keep my head down and keep my mouth shut. People were questioning my attitude, my integrity, my professionalism. My reputation was being tarnished as people started conjuring up ideas that I must have done something to warrant this type of treatment. I got the opportunity to speak to the press on one occasion and had to explain nothing had happened. You could forgive people, however, for thinking it was bullshit. No way were they buying that. A player just doesn’t disappear from the first team quicker than Lord Lucan for no good reason.

So what options does a player have when this happens? Not many now due to the changes in the transfer window regulations. You can’t leave on a permanent transfer and you can’t leave on a loan so unless it’s during a transfer window you are stuck. But there is a way back. It takes incredible mental strength and a lot of willpower but things can change. Schweinsteiger trotting onto the pitch at Old Trafford recently proved that. He looked dead and buried but through hard work, a positive attitude and true professionalism he fought his way back. I managed to do the same at Sheffield United. I was determined to pull on the red and white stripes again, even if it was just once. I knew I still had something to offer. Being a model professional in these situations is almost not enough. You have to turn into James Milner, the ultimate professional. I have never been so focused as to not let them grind me down.

During the summer after my season in the wilderness Clough was sacked and replaced by Nigel Adkins. I was still under contract at Sheffield United and all of a sudden I had a chance to play at Bramall Lane when it looked like all hope had previously been lost. In my second game back for the club I came off the bench at Morecambe to score a last minute winner. It wasn’t the most glamorous game I’ve ever played in but it meant so much to me and my family after coming through such a torrid period in my career. Afterwards I gave an interview to the local media which is available below. May I finish by asking anyone who doubts how much a footballer cares to listen to that. I care and my fellow professionals care much more than you will ever know.

Never rated him as a player, was so immobile he looked like he had an ironing board strapped to his back. A bit like Nick Montgomery with diving boots on. Good, honest interview though, and good luck to him in the states. The game's a lot slower here and the general standard isn't that great so he should fit in nicely. Hope he does well and remains injury free till he hangs his boots up.

He was dropped because he wasn't good enough no matter how 'honest' and 'hard working' he was.

One of Adkins biggest mistakes was giving clowns like him and Mceverley a clean slate.
No amount of tears after goals at Morecambe will make a good defender.

Our current manager spotted our defecincies and solved the defensive issues and is one of the reasons we are where we are.

To be fair to Adkins, he did ship Collins out after the managers before him kept picking him and offering him new contracts. Wilder has done a good job (obviously) but he did benefit from most of the dross leaving as their contracts expired (and the Lazarus-like comeback from Coutts).

I've never quite understood some fans attitude towards Collins. I remember fans getting on his back from the very first season he played for us. My view on Collins is that he was a very good player for us at his peak. The partnership with Harry Maguire gave us the meanest defence in the Football league. The lad gave everything, 100% every game. I do admit that he started to look a bit past his sell by date towards the end and probably should not have been resurrected to the first team squad by Adkins. But overall I think the lad did very well for us. It's a pity we don't have anyone at centre half presently who can head a ball as well as him. I like Jack O' Connell and think he's a good header of the ball - but he's stranded out there at left back where wingers can torment him to death. I like Jake Wright for his calmness, positioning and composure at the back - but although he's decent in the air for his size, he's no aerial commander back there. And the other guy...sorry...I think the sooner he goes back to the West Midlands the better. I think next season Chris should look to bring in a big strong centre half and some full backs as well who can tackle, because we are going to need them.

He was below average at best. A limited defender who didn't like having the ball, and when under pressure dropped deeper and deeper to the point where he was defending the 18yd box from the half way line.

Was rightly dropped by Clough....told he wouldn't feature again and then opted to hang around taking his wage while refusing to move on loan or out the door on a paid up deal. (less than what he could get if he stayed on) that "attitude" is why he was frozen out.

No hated for the fella, he did his best when he played. It's just that his best wasn't very good.

Someone told me he was a very sore loser at everything Clough that is, they had a charity match in house at Derby he was playing and apparently the only one taking it ultra serious even putting in a few hard tackles and then whining at others, Never particularly like Clough, he comes across as mardy as Warnock did but without the charm.

I have no issues with Collins what so ever. In his prime he was an excellent partner for a very young Maguire.

At no point could anyone question his desire to play for our club.

Think it's easy to forget how bad he was in our relegation season .

So called championship player plying his trade in league 1 , the bloke will do good . Collins has never been good enough even playing at the side of Harry . Harry pulled him out of the shit and made him look average .

Collins not for me . Should have got rid when we got relegated .

A panic buy who was brought in to try and help us maintain our championship status. Instead he ended up a financial ball and chain around the club's ankles (not the only one). In his first couple of years he was extremely fortunate to play next to a top class centre half in Maguire, and a very capable young right back in Lowton. By the end of his spell, it was really getting to the parody stage. It was no surprise he went for the riches abroad, as his prospects wouldn't have been good here. The freezing out by Clough was completely understandable, and was explained by Clough at the time: he was a senior player, consistently not following the manager's tactical instructions. That said he could have sucked it up and recalled him for the play offs.

Collins never good enough and his attitude on the field was abysmal - Blamed everyone and anyone for his own shortcomings !

Collins wasn't that bad, he became dodgy towards the end but was always committed. To be fair, our defense this season hasn't been great. Our midfield and sharp are the reasons we are top. Any bit of pressure our defense gets this season they concede

The goal that he mentions against Morecambe can be sheen below (at 1:55 if the timestamp doesnt work). I remember seeing his celebration and knew it meant a lot to him to be back playing (and scoring) for us.

I like Jake Wright for his calmness, positioning and composure at the back - but although he's decent in the air for his size, he's no aerial commander back there.

Very harsh IMHO. His biggest asset is his reading of the game. He rarely needs to jump in or make a sliding tackle as he just anticipates what will happen and calmly shields the ball out of danger. He doesn't have much pace and isn't particularly good in the air, but this season his organisational ability has made all the difference. Bringing in EEL and Lafferty without Wright could have just continued the early season keystone cops defending.

Whilst Fleck, Coutts, Duffy and Freemena have played major roles, the two players who have made all the difference this season are Billy (for his goals) and JW for his leadership.

I'd say in the first year he was decent. After that, in Wilson's second season, we often played far too deep and I blame Collins for that.

Tried hard, clearly loved the club, but instrumental in our relegation to the 3rd div and our stay in it.

Too slow to be a professional player even in the lower leagues, therefore defended too deep and often played attackers onside.

Easily turned.

Tended to head the ball into the ground defensively, and up in the air when in on goal (i.e. completely arse-backwards in both cases). Scored some good headed goals from corners, but put far too many decent balls into the crowd.

Sometimes called "a leader", on account of pointing and shouting a lot, but his "leading" tended to mean publicly blaming others for his own mistakes (often wrongly).

Thanks for your service, Neill. It's a "No" from me.

Agree, his heart was probably in the right place, even if his headers often weren't.
