Wilder gives game time to players who need to get involved and need match time (Riley, Done, O'Shea, Lavery) because they need to be on point if they have to come into the team during the final third of the season.
We could have won that game. O'Shea really should have notched, Lavs should have scored - keep it on the ground, feller and Fleck was inches away from the winner, hitting the post. Moore had to make one very good save.

I thought it was sound management and could see exactly why Wilder did it. Better to blood Riley in a game like that than have him slot in if Freeman gets injured and the lad doesn't quite get the pace.

O'Shea needs game time - to get to the pace and to see if he can earn a contract - and Duffy needs a bit of a rest.

Coutts and Fleck ran the show again and O'Shea was tidy and busy. Shame he didn't slot his chance away - but I like what I see of him.

They have 10 away fixtures left including Blades, Scunthorpe, Fleetwood, Southend, Bradford. Easier run in at home on paper (six fixtures).

I had no idea about this until that table earlier in the thread (so about 5 minutes ago), but that table says they've played 17 at home (6 left) and 13 away (10 left). So 10 out of 16 away from here on in.
I presume you've been using btl's logarithm books for your calcs Kenny.

We did well enough with a team-sheet that looked like we were playing in Round 2 of the cup. Couple of minor hicupps with a bit too much tippy tappy at times in the first half and a slight mishandle by Moore off the damp turf. O'Shea and Riley looked very decent. Good point and 90+ looks well on.

Well for a start, Bristol Rovers are only mid-table because of their away form. They are only 4 points off the top of the home table so this was always going to be a tough game.

And the Scunny game is a genuine '6 pointer' at this stage of the season, getting a good result against them is more important to us than beating Bristol. It's not just about us gaining points and Scunny not on the day, the winner (if there is one) will get a massive boost of confidence. If Scunny were to beat us, they could kick on again and even win the title leaving us to battle it out for second place. If we beat them and well, we could really knock their confidence and they could even struggle to stay top two.

I think Wilder's got it spot on personally, he'll know how much players have in the tank, and it's not like he played the second string is it?

I can't see beyond we threw 2 points away tonight. Obviously hope we beat scunny but if we don't a few will be looming back at tonight.

At 7-45 PM we had 63 points. By 9-40 PM we had 64 points and had drawn an away match against a side that have a good home record. I think it is a bit odd to describe that as two points thrown away. There is no guarantee at all that a different line up would have done any better. After all, against Fleetwood and Walsall a different line up came away with diddly squat.

To throw something away you have to have it in your possession in the first place.

We started off with nothing and ended up with a point from a difficult away fixture. A point gained seems more accurate.

There's no shame drawing there. We had a shot hit the inside of the post and there was a brilliant save off Lavery too.
There are no guarantees a side with Sharp, Freeman and Duffy would have done any better.

I think the clean sheet was as important as the point, especially as we couldn't even buy one before the last home game.

It's great to see us winning well and out-scoring the opposition, but we were always likey to concede a sloppy goal and throw away points. Keeping clean sheets settles the whole team, keeper through to strikers, and always gives us a chance.

Debate about player changes aside, last night's lineup at the very least shows just how deep our squad is at this level which can only bode well for us.

I would gladly bet my right bollock that the likes of O'Shea, Lavery and Riley would just walk straight into the teams of any of our promotion rivals. Even divisive players like Basham and Done would be considered savvy business by so many in this league!

Agree with the OP, from my view on the terrace we absolutely threw 2 points away from a game we could have won with a stronger team selection. People that say we played a strong team set up to win when we had Done (did nothing as usual) up front and Coutts are having a laugh.

Those sort of games are the ones which separate the top two from the rest of the pack.

When the league start giving out points for stylish possession Coutts will be a great asset, until then I'd rather have players with more attacking intent and less defensive frailties which we now have. Depends how a person likes their footy of course, fifty passes going nowhere before the opposition pinch it back (yawn) or half a dozen meaningful passes and a shot on goal.

To go up we need 2 points a game , thats a title winning average

we managed that average from the 2 toughest away games we had left
and people want to question it

they have to dream of getting 4 points from every 2 of their last 5 sets of away games
they have 5 of the top 7 to play away
we have 7 left , 6 v bottom half teams
we are top despite having played all the elite away

even Chelsea drew at Burnley with their best team
try and join the reality of life , you dont win every game
