No, let's not.

We have picked up some good players, mostly out of contract or would have been out of contract in the summer coming up.

There is no reason to believe we won't be promoted this season, just none at all.

I hope you are right. We shall see.

James Hanson had loads of critics at Bradford but his strengths give us something we've not has all season, so although Hanson has limitations it should prove to be a great buy for our system. In another team Hanson would possibly be poor and could end up a failure.

I was pretty underwhelmed at the signing but I'll tell you what, at least he put a shift in unlike his more "illustrious" predecessors Higdon and Sammon to name but two. So well done lad, crack on.

I agree Danny, hopefully soon enough we will be up there and we can see how things play out.

Assuming we are promoted this season I expect us to have a similar season to Barnsley. Hanging around the mid table to just outside the playoffs area.

Regards our transfer policy. I also expect Wilder to mop up the best players in leagues 1 and 2
For example we'll gamble on the the Omar Boggle types.

The key to our success is Wilder and Knills knowledge of league 1 and league 2.
I'm sure he's already drawn up a short list of players in the lower divisions that he's confident will do well in the Championship.

Another factor that Wilder seems good at is getting the right personalities hungry for success.
Its no good just relying on talent, a player needs motivation and application.
Hence why he was quick to ship out Che Adams.

That to me, would constitute a decent season.

And I wouldn't want us to spend £10,000,000 on Jordan Rhodes - but if a fantastic player comes available for £2,000,000 I'd expect us to be able to get him. We've heard plenty of noise from the Prince and McCabe about 'when we go up' so it'll be nice to see what happens.

Has McCabe or the Prince ever come out and confirmed the whole 'when we go up' thing? I don't think i've ever heard either of them discuss it.

Not saying it isn't true, I might've missed it, but it just seems to be one of those things that keeps getting repeated until everyone thinks it's a fact.

If we do go up I can only hope the Board will show a bit of ambition and put a lot more investment in. Of course there are exceptions but generally speaking the quality of player needed to compete in the top 2 divisions doesn't come cheap.

When you read the following quote from CW, it makes it all the more remarkable as to how and why he's took us to the top of the league.

“We’ve not paid over £300,000 for a player"

I accept that in this league that sort of money is probably seen as the norm, or even top end, but I remember Wolves a few seasons back and I'm sure Wigan last season spending far more than we have on players.

It's not just the recruitment, but the way and the speed at which CW has turned a broken team from last season into a team that has a completely different mindset this season

Regardless of the end of season outcome, he's a winner!

I think it comes down to instilling belief and confidence in the players, creating a squad harmony and a mantra of "we're all in this together". Whether we are 2-0 down or 4-0 up the players have the fight drilled into them and fire in their bellies. I believe that's down to Wilder's man management skills, we, as fans love listening to the man in interviews imagine working for him day in and day out getting the detailed footballing views and advice. Must be a brilliant place to be inside the camp at the moment and full credit to him.

I don't think money buys success at any level, you can, and we have, hoover up some talented lads from teams in this division and get them to buy into the philosophy of the manager and suddenly they are 10 feet tall when they walk out onto the pitch.

The thing that really pleases me with Wilder is that I think he gives players the "hunger/ personality test".

For example let's take EEL.

Let's assume his wage has increased from £3K a week to £6K a week when signing his new contract at Wolves.

Wilder might be interested in signing EEL but he only wants hungry players keen to join our ambition.
If we offer EEL £6K to match his wage at Wolves but give him a longer contract then you would expect EEL to sign. But if he starts demanding £8K or £10K, then Wilder is likely to think he's only interested in money and not ambitious enough to want to commit to our club.

We shouldn't be going around begging players to join SUFC.

Wilder will sell the club and if a player is still playing hard ball in negotiations then i expect Wilder will think "fk em" and move on to his other targets.

Wilder wants players that are enthusiastic about joining us and buy in to our ambitions as it's creates the best team spirit. Never under estimate how far team work and team spirit can take a team.

we have sold 2 academy players, Ramsdale and DCL who probably wouldn't get much game time this year or next and Adams who's head went and not from the academy. We haven't sold anyone who was ready to play in the 1st team.

Yes, you just keep telling yourself that.

I was discussing this very point with a mate of mine the other day;

I was saying that Wilder seems to be able to tell if a player truly wants to play for the blades and if it becomes obvious that they are 'hard balling' he would move on to other targets.

We moved on to discussing this strategy and generally agreed that when you are the biggest club in league 1 with an excellent shout of promotion this tactic works.

He may need to be a bit more open if we are ever challenging for the top 2-6 in the championship when several teams will be competing for the same 3-6 players.

We should be doing exactly that.
Kemar Roofe...Bogle....those types of player who have made a name in lower leagues, learned the game and are clearly stand out players where they are. Players like that have a good chance of making it higher as they have already shown the necessary attitude to succeed through diversity.
These players might command fees like £2million, and although a lot of money are as good as a Rhodes at £10m. It's that method of recruitment that will be a success. Add to that quality youth players we can use and we have a winner.

I remain amazed by the number of people who have convinced themselves that a player who played 36 games and scored 11 goals last season was either not a regular or not good enough.

It's bizarre.

Wolves got McDonald on the cheap. Not sure if they paid a big fee for anyone else. What did they pay for Clarke and Dicko? That said, their wages for the likes of Sakho, Clarke, McDonald, Henry, Edwards etc. will have been huge for this level.

Wigan on the other hand paid about a million each for Wildschutt and Grigg as well as signing loads more players.

Who have we paid 300k for then?

I’d guess our biggest fees were for Moore and Carruthers. We also paid a fee for Clarke but reckon that was more like £100k for the stories going round at the time.

Its noticeable theres never much coverage of this type of quote

Wilder, whose side lead the table ahead of Saturday’s visit to Peterborough, cited the backing of co-owners Kevin McCabe and HRH Prince Abdullah bin Musa’ed bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as a factor behind United’s rapid progress in recent months. “I appreciate the backing and I appreciate that the club have allowed me to go out there and get on with my job,” he said. “Now, we have to back up the decisions we’ve made.”

Some still refuse to even murmur the slightest acknowledgement to the board
even through gritted teeth
Yet the man who is steering in the right direction , chooses to be generous about their backing
and I think weve realised CW doesnt deal in waffle

If you listen to the interview, the message he’s trying to get across seems to be that he thinks he’s had adequate backing and has essentially been allowed to reinvest money raised from sales and not had interference from above.

I don’t agree with the Star Headline of “it doesn’t take 2 years to overhaul a squad”. It’s a glib interpretation of the situation. If Wilder had entered to a situation with 40 professionals on 2 year contracts, then it probably would have taken 2 years unless the board was prepared to pay massive amounts of money to pay off a full squad and then some more to recruit a new one.

The wage bill is now much, much bigger than transfer fees nowadays. Don't forget agents' fees too!!

But when you consider than since Wilder came in we’ve moved on

  1. McEveley

  2. Flynn

  3. Baptiste (end of loan)

  4. Sammon (end of loan)

  5. Woolford

  6. Hammond

  7. JCR

  8. Kennedy

  9. McGahey

  10. Cuvelier

  11. De Girolamo

  12. Adams

  13. DCL

  14. Ramsdale

  15. J. Wallace

  16. Willis

  17. McFadzean

  18. Howard

  19. Baxter

  20. Harris

  21. Evans

  22. Hamilton

We’ve also had the likes of Brayford, McNulty, Whiteman, K. Wallace spending time out on loan with Brayford in particular easing the wage bill.

Overall, I’d be surprised if the wage bill this season is as high as last season and we’ve also generated a net income on transfer fees to boot. There will still be backing in the sense that I suspect we will still make a trading loss for the year but I would imagine the losses being funded and the overall football budget this year is lower than it has been for the last 2 years.

Without wanting to diminish Wilder's efforts, I don't think Fleck would be here if we weren't the highest wage payer in the division.

Agreed. But with by far the biggest attendances in the division and no clubs with parachute payments this time it surely stands to reason that we should be able to pay more in wages than our rivals? I wouldn’t imagine we’re talking stupid amounts more. Let’s not forget we missed out on Tafazolli because we wouldn’t match his wage demands when Peterborough would.

I remain amazed by the number of people who have convinced themselves that a player who played 36 games and scored 11 goals last season was either not a regular or not good enough.

It's bizarre.
Not bizarre. I am a believer of getting rid of bad attitude types who don't work hard for the team

Indeed. Rather like the Frank Lampard - Monty shite....

It's not impossible but it's very unlikely and the players won't be relaxed if people start expecting them to win promotion again.

The kind of football we're playing isn't way above L1 or we'd be ten points clear of second place. We're no better than any of the other clubs that have won automatic promotion since we've been down here.

As with all these 'snapshot in time' assessments, we simply wont know until April. For what its worth [and, in my case, that is a lot] our team is significantly better than any other in this league and would, without any recruitment [but there will be] survive in the lower middle of the league above, notwithstanding that good ol' Bladey inferiority complex.

or maybe not
if theres a will to oust certain players , it can be achieved
no one likes sweeping the kop steps every week
or sitting on the under 23 bench

when Blackwell was tasked with cutting the wage bill he got shot of a pile on contracts
therers more ways than just paying them off at a savvy managers disposal

Adkins wasnt street wise enough to do it

Bizarrely, one of those who amaze you is none other than Tufty Wilder. He couldn't wait to get rid.
