Ben Whiteman

Very rarely has he been played in his proper centre midfield position and given a run of games.

CW paid good money for Duffy, Fleck and now Caruthers. He will never demote one of those to play Whiteman.

I think Whiteman could be on his way at the end of the season. It shows that if you are playing well with our 23s then you can at least prosper in L2 and the Conference. I say Conference as i see Jake Wright Jnr scored again for Southport. Any 23s watchers will smile as he has also picked up three bookings in three games also !!

When Evans became Manager, I think they'd slipped down to about 17th. However, if memory serves me correct, only about 5 points off the play-offs

They've had a mixed bag of results since Evans appointment, but seem to be finding their feet now and possibly BW is making a difference

When Evans joined I stuck a tenner on them making the play-offs @ 5/1 so come on Ben and come on Mansfield

Not as bad as i thought then. Good bet that. Lets hope its Ben whos helped tuek spowly creep up the table.

Mansfield Town midfielder Ben Whiteman has been attracting a number of admirers during his loan spell in League Two and scored another goal in yesterday’s 2-0 win over Leyton Orient.

The 20-year-old signed for the Stags at the beginning of the month for the remainder of the season and has started every league game since arriving at Field Mill.

Whiteman made his professional debut for the Blades in 2014 under Nigel Clough and has managed to accumulate a further 11 appearances for the League One club. This term, the midfielder was primarily a fringe player under Chris Wilder as he made five appearances during the first-half of the season and moved to Steve Evans’ side to gain some much needed first-team experience.

The youngster has showcased his ability during his time with the Nottingamshire club, bagging two goals in his five starts. Following Mansfield’s 2-0 victory over Leyton Orient, fitness coach Lee Taylor was full of praise for the former Manchester United academy prospect:

“Ben Whiteman was different class, he pops up and how cool was that strike? He’s just took it in his stride and he’s becoming a man.

“From playing League One football at Sheffield United and coming through now and playing in the senior squad here, he’s getting fitter, he’s getting stronger and it’s only testament to obviously what the gaffer, Paul Raynor and myself are delivering for the football club.

“Ben Whiteman is becoming a man now. He’s been excellent, he’s excelled in training, he wants to do everything right and he delivers. He comes in to the analysts after the game and he’s looking for stats, he’s looking for anything to make him better.

“He’s come here and we’ve took him to that next level and we’ll continue to take him to that next level. He’s a big part of the gaffer and he’s a big part of Mansfield Town Football Club at the moment and long may it continue.”

Whiteman has been a driving force as Mansfield climbed to 10th in the League Two table and is yet to lose a game with his loan club. The winning form from his time under Chris Wilder has continued to show at Mansfield and Whiteman is impressing.

Mansfield Town face a trip to Barnet next weekend.

Let's just let the lad continue where he is, gain confidence and experience and look at him at the end of the season.

Hopefully, we will be a league higher which means opportunities for him will be harder to find here. If he can rise to that challenge and show he's worth a place, great....if not then his age would suggest he's still worth keeping and sending on loan to get games. Then we re assess.

We certainly don't want to be selling the lad and then having to buy him back for millions more than we paid for him...,.Billy Sharp style!

Scored again and assisted for Mansfield in what looks like it's going to be a win vs orient

Yeah, he scored again today, the stags fans love him! £350k was suggested by one of their fans in the comments on twitter. Keep it up Ben.

4 year contract, get him out on a season long loan to league one next year and give him time to grow, then bring him back and build the side around him should he live up to his potential. Or you can look at it another way, we might be talking a couple of million rather than a couple of thousand when we sell him. Let's learn the lesson from the Ramsdale situation.

Let him know how important he's going to be to us loving forward, give him a long contract and security and watch him prosper. Proper midfielder, not scared to have a pop and put a tackle in. Didn't he get 2 assists for us in his first game?

His performances for us and now for Mansfield suggests that Whiteman is ready to make the transition from academy to senior football. You have to say, that he is one of those lads worth the gamble of a decent three year contract, even at £2,000 a week, it could reap big dividends in the long run?

It obviously won't deter any Premier League clubs coming in for him or prevent him from having his head turned if they do, but it might mean the difference between a £1M or £5M fee, when that time comes?

I'd have picked him more last year to be honest. Decent passing range, looks like he'll be Ok physically. Good loan spell for him this

Always looked to me like the most likely of the current crop to make it,versatile and a goal scoring midfielder would be a good addition to our squad next season if he keeps progressing as he is.

Tough one as central midfield is possibly our strongest position, especially if we sign OShea permanently. He's now got a taste for first team football and isn't gonna want to go back to not playing. Who is he gonna replace Fleck? Coutts? Carruthers? OShea ? That's a lot of competition..it also surely means Reed will be released ?

Ricky, not that simple is it? Surprisingly he has a say in whether he signs a contact or not and after tasting first team football he might well want to continue playing on a Saturday not watching .

Whilst I'm disappointed with our non -existent 'pathway for youth' I'm sure Wilder will recognise. Whitemans potential and keep the communications and encouragement channels open.

I'm sure Wilder has it in hand and will be speaking to the lad and keeping tabs on him. I think a contract will be sorted sooner rather than later with the proviso that he can continue his developen elsewhere with a tathey to get him challenging for a regular spot at the Lane late next season or the season after.

The loan has been good for him and Utd needed to see that he can deliver in a man's game. Seems that he is showing Utd that he clearly can.

I wouldn't usually want him anywhere near Mansfield (cos their fans hate Utd with a passion for some reason) nor do I personally like old fatty and his sidekick who is their management team. However if it is good for the lad and he is developing nicely then for me he has continue there and bring his game on. Hopefully better for Utd in the long run.

If Whiteman is offered a contract by Sheffield United but chooses to go to Mansfield so he doesn't have to face tough competition for his place he'd be mad and perhaps also be broadcasting his own lack of belief in himself. At 19 he often looked our best CM option at the end of last year (he got around the pitch, had good progressive distribution and looked up for the fight) in a top 1/2 league 1 side, at 20 he's clearly too good for the top of league 2.

I suspect he'd back himself to make a pitch for our first team at 21.

I'd happily forego an extra first team signing next season to get Whiteman and Brooks on longer contracts.

I have no doubt that they're both worth committing to. Both have good ability, a good mentality and will only get stronger and better.
