This is a bit of a random post so apologies in advanced but bare with me.

With the signing of omar bogle who i think is a fantastic prospect and talent it got me thinking about WAFC and their squad and transfers in general. I really think they have hit the nail on the head with who they sign.

They rarely break the bank, always chase hungry young flair players who are technically astute. They really punch above their weight in terms of the money they spend and play good progressive football. When you look at their team you have players like morsy (you may not of heard of him) max power, grigg, powell, gomez, burns (you may not of heard of him) colcough, warnock, jacobs etc. Now i am not saying is this is the best team in the champ. What i am saying is that they have got all the right personel and mix of players to play good footy on a budget. Most of these players came from lower leagues. They are pretty cheap and hungry to prove themselves in a good footballing side. You could probably apply similar logic to brizzle city, posh (not so much these days) bournemouth and burnle. When you think about the money in football these days and player like rhodes with numbers like 10 mil, i would much rather chose the 1 mill bogle option. Not saying rhodes will be shit just that bang for buck i dont think hes going to be 10x better than bogle.

This then got me thinking about our transfers, i think we are heading in the right direction. I thought that Oshea was a crap signing at first but i have changed my mind on the fact that a) i havent seen him play b) he is a hungry flair player who has done well at chessie. Carruthers looks sharp, Riley is young, hungry and highly rates and we know that chapman ticks this box also. Add to this fleck who i think is one of if not the best CM in the league who was a FREE!!, duffy, moore and oconnell. I believe we are starting to mould ourselves into a club who think in a more positive and progressive manner. We aren't reckless with money anymore and are building for the future instead of this season.

I like the direction in which we are going and i would choose this route over clumbsy spendingg with journeyman etc. Credit has to go to the board and manager as finally i believe we are heading in the right direction. Although i compare it with wigan i would much rather that than the united of old that got us in this mess.

So well done united, and fair play to wigan who i think have got the blend almost spot on. We should aim to model ourselves on them/bournemouth as with our support/finances we should prosper.

Wigan still have the final £9M of parachute payments this season. So it's shit or bust to stay in the Championship. Because of this they have considerably more available money than we do.

If they get it right and stay in the Championship then fine. If they go down, they will be in big trouble as they'll have high earners and a massive drop in turnover.

Nah. They're just cunts

They might not be doing great on the pitch but that's not mainly down to the sort of players they've signed. More to do with the management changing too much after promotion.

They haven't broke the bank for anyone and don't pay massive wages, when they were in L1 they spent fees on good young players without going crazy, and it worked very well. Look at Wildschut, signed for £1m and they sell him a year later for £7m. Then look at Morsy and Power who are both doing well in the Championship. Alex Gilbey's also an excellent signing in midfield but is currently injured. They've done very well to get Bogle.

They've currently got 9 loans though after going mental yesterday. That's not too wise.

Probably not a good example naming Wigan as having a great transfer policy.

They currently sit in a relegation position.
If they go down to league 1 they will be in big financial trouble.

Agree Fleck was a great buy but there's no such thing as a FREE transfer.
The notional transfer fee is simply added to the players salary.

I don't that is true about wages. Because of parachute payments they paid top dollar last season in L1 to the tune of £20M. Ok that will include all staff not just SCMP.

But it is about twice our wage bill last season. All the figures are in the link below.

Parachute payments are a massive advantage in L1, it's why Wolves and Wigan got out first time. It's also why they have a fighting chance of survival this season.

Like i said im not saying that they have the best team etc. I just think they have got the correct approach and ethos to running a football club, compared to the amount of money they spend they do well. Maybe bournemouth is a better example currently but wigan were fresh in my mind from buying bogle. Considering until a couple of seasons ago they were a stable prem team for many a season i think this proves it. Wigan are a small champ/league 1 club so they have punched well above their weight for a long time.

Like someone else has suggested i think their position is more down to the current manager. When they had martinez and rosler they were a much better example.

That's a damn fine OP, SUFCinks, but what's all this about hungry players? I'm not sure Fatty Foulke would cut it in the modern game, you know.

I think most of the high earners were in place before their relegation to L1. Since their relegation their transfer approach has been good. Although it looks like they panic signed like crazy yesterday.

It says their wage bill the season before last was £39M, the year they were relegated. That is eye watering.

If we go up we have to spend wisely but it just shows how much money is washing around in the Championship these days.

Any idea what ours is?

They also signed Gabriel Obertan yesterday so not sure how he fits in with the 'young and hungry' transfer policy. Actually not sure where he fits in with any transfer policy...

Wigan are shit club in a Rugby town.

Oh and SUFCinks you may want to think about changing your avatar to a player who actually wants to play for us?

£21m of the £28m turnover is from PL payments.

Plus, their administrative expenses are £31m . £31m? What are they hiding and how many Desso's have they bought!!!!

:)

In those accounts they got rid of players who'd cost them over £17m

There was a thread on our accounts recently but the link below is a good summary of another loss making season.

From memory total wages were about £10M. You'd have to check that against the actual accounts. This article refers to first team wages at £6.8M. Wigan's first team wages were probably around £9M (60% of turnover) if they kept within the 60% of turnover which is the SCMP calculation. It could have been higher if there was an equity injection.

Wigan had a considerable advantage over us. However we had a considerable advantage over the rest of the league and finished 11th. The lesson is don't spunk wages on people like Hammond.

I'd guess the wages for SCMP would have been much higher, particularly as the overall wage bill was £20m. I believe they could spend 60% of the £28m turnover (£24m from PL and FL) and would think they'd have spent £12m plus (at least) on first team wages with the players they had.

re the admin expenses, looking at their accounts, I'd guess their expenses are lower than ours by £2m plus.

The figures you quote for us are right.

:)

£28M was their relegation season turnover, it reduced to £15.7M last season and that was the figure I worked on to get a comparison with our SCMP figure. Their turnover is drastically down because parachute payments reduce significantly in years 3 and 4.

If they go down their turnover will be £6M or less with parachute payments gone. It really is shit or bust for them.
