The kid is supposedly a great player in the making and getting rave reviews. We are told that at the last minute championship teams make a bid to sign him but he turns them down.
Today our left side midfield player was injured so why wasn't the kid given the shirt? For the first time i will say......bad management decision!

I agree, I don't know why Done was picked over him on the left wingback slot, Done is not a defender while he played fine first half, he disappeared second half.
Riley should have come on for him but picked Scougal, again not a defender or winger really. So yeah another strange decisions from Wilder.

I think Wilder probably wants to give Riley a few days training with the lads to get him to know the system before throwing him in - that's all. Scougall did well when he came on. Should have taken Done off earlier imo.

Difficult to criticise Matt Done, because he clearly puts his heart & soul into it. And Coutts suggested in the programme today also that Doney's a popular guy behind the scenes. But he's increasingly looking like a spare part.

Whatever Hussey's previous failings, I'd much rather have seen him on the left (& same goes for last week) rather than MD being given the "sympathy vote" to play out there in Lafferty's absence.

Maybe just a bit soon for Riley.

Played in the week for Man Utd U23s after returning from a hamstring injury. Big risk to play him again today.

He will almost certainly be thrown in against one of the best teams in the division on Tuesday so I hope he is as good as they say.

good luck young un.

I did think it was odd he didn't come on for Done instead of Scougall, he would have surely been ok for the 15 minutes even if he played midweek.

Poor old Doney reminds me of the stripper interview in The Full Monty right now.

'So you don't score goals, can't tackle, can't cross a ball and you can't beat a man. So....what can you do?'

'Well..,there is this....

Because Scougall offers much more in wide areas.

DERRRRRRR!

I hope it's just a case of him settling into the club.

I think it might be. Remember he did come to us on the back of a slight injury; granted he managed 80 minutes in an under 23 match for Man U so is fot enough to start but maybe Chris just wants to ease him in gently and not risk him just yet? I expect he will feature against Wimbledon.

Will be interesting where he fits him in. I can't see him dropping either wing back to be honest

I think Freeman certainly is safe for now. Not so sure about Lafferty.

Wilder clearly rates Lafferty though and brought him straight back in tonight. I thought Freeman was one of the ones least culpable tonight (though he certainly didn't play well) so would be harsh to drop him

So if people are right with easing Riley in, then why have him taking a slot up on the bench?

Especially if when you have the chance to bring him on you bring somebody else on?

Or somebody else could take a slot up on the bench who is going to be brought on if required?

I enjoy reading your posts Alfreton and you're obviously a smart guy - but I have to disagree with you on this one.

I agree with you that Done gives a lot of effort - but so would I. I'd run around until I was as purple in the face as an octopus about to squirt its ink. But I'd be of not much use to the team. (I may have been a few years ago, when, coincidentally, I played for Alfreton Town - ok so it was only once and they said, "don't call us - we'll call you" afterwards).

To be honest, I don't give a flying foreskin whether Done, or anyone else for that matter, is a "popular guy behind the scenes". It's irrelevant. I'm only interested in what they are like "in front of the scenes", i.e. on match days.

I could go back months and months on here, before the start of this season certainly, where I have pointed out that Done:

1 Is NOT a striker
and
2 Is NOT a prolific goalscorer and MUST NOT be relied upon to bag us the goals to secure promotion

But to criticise Done for these 2 things, has, at times on here, been akin to sketching the prophet Mohammed and poking fun at him amongst a set of Islamic Fantasists. Because some Blades, maybe many Blades? just absolutely love a player who will run around like his arse is on fire and achieve nothing. I can imagine them, in fact, I don't need to imagine them because I hear them at the match and in the pubs before and after going, "I like Done, he works so hard, he creates chances for Billy Sharp by pulling defenders all over the place" and then they also invent statistics suggesting that when Done plays we never lose (which is to ignore 4 out of the first 5 games of this season for a start).

All but the most stupid of fans are coming to realise the truth in what I said back then. Done had a purple patch - just one - in his entire career, that was the season we bought him. A lot of players do this, just look around. I don't know what's changed about football but it seems to be that the days of footballers, like those from our famous 1970's team, who were consistent and good for years and years and years, are gone. Now, it's a case of, "good one minute - then never heard of again".

Done has had his day in the sun. It was nice while it lasted. He may be an absolutely lovely fella - very happy to hear that - but that's not what it's about at all.

He cannot cut it for Sheffield United - and remember we are here, in the old 3rd Divison - so that's enough evidence for me.

Thanks for the memories Matty, even though they were very short-lived. I'm sure you've got a family to think about, either now or at some stage in the future. Do what's best for them and enjoy your football somewhere else. Because your time here is up.

No, I agree with you. I was just trying to think of reasons why Done's seemingly being given almost preferential treatment (in the sense that, after Wilder finally runs out of patience with his appalling strike rate as a forward, he then goes & plays him at left wing back after previously saying how silly it was of Adkins to play him there).

I'm certainly among those thinking it were better to move him on this window if it can be done. If not, I'd merely have him as back up for Lavery as a similar type player.

P.S. Thanks for the compliment. I enjoy reading your posts too, even at times when I don't fully agree with you: they're always interesting.

Joe is still On his induction, so isn't ready to play yet.

He's currently away with the Shoreham boys, getting acclimatised to Blades life - by shagging some women and drinking some beer.

He's doing initiation tests to join mcnulty's bad boys club.

Currently necking a yard of ale.

Missed opportunity for the OP

Surely the thread title should have been
"Crikey No Riley"

I know he's not Irish but ......

Hope he gets some decent game time soon or these big clubs are just going to send their promising youngsters elsewhere next time.
