Jake Wright still undefeated

I like Wright but after we were badly exposed for pace yesterday he isn't the answer to that particular problem.

We're top because we've scored 53 goals. We've also conceded 30, the second most of anyone in the top 6.

Precisely because they've been two thirds of our back 3.

If Basham and O'Connell were anywhere near as poor as you strangely seem to think they are, we wouldn't be top. EEL is poor in the middle of the 3 but with those two either side of him we've got by.

The way we play, if we had genuinely poor defenders we would've conceded plenty more than 30.

We've actually got the best home defence in the league. Away is where we concede too many but it's not harmed our results too much.

Jack O'Connell, easy. Never understood why anyone thinks he's any good. He's slow, cumbersome and devoid of any discernible footballing brain.

We can't keep playing Basham just because he has the ability to be piss-poor in two positions.

Jake Wright is so far above anyone else defensively. Not playing him for much longer will be a fatal error.

No chance, JOC pisses all over EEL and Basham. He's quicker than EEL, a better footballer and just as good at winning headers.

Wright is the best defensive player, but he adds nothing offensively. Let's be fair, it's not often this season that we've actually had to defend, so I do fully understand why he hasn't been playing. I definitely think that if Wright is to come back in, it's got to be for EEL. He looks like the one most likely to make mistakes.

Indeed - Wright does very little going forward. The only time was when we attacked Chezzer in the sencond half and he popped up down the left wing. Watch who passes the ball to Fleck for Freemans goal.

The issue with our defence is when we have 60% possession our defenders are unemployed - Walsall showed CW & AK where we need to improve in defence. That defeat happened at just the right time for us. Not a lot of damage done and plenty oft time to put it right.

He's considerably better at winning headers. And they usually go exactly where they're intended to (as do Wright's). He must have an incredibly strong neck. He's mobile for his size, he's aggressive but composed and has good passing ability. His positioning is good too - he rarely gets done for pace, it's no coincidence.

The advantage of Wright is found in his leadership and organisational skill, this alone means he should be in the team as it gives EEL and O'Connell (who we would probably agree are better footballers and more athletic than Wright by far) the confidence with which to play their best games.
Basham is a good player at this level and I'm not disappointed when he is in the team but having Wright in the defence is worth 3 players as the unit is so much stronger as a result.

If Wright isn't going to be brought back and Wilder sticks to the current three, I think he should maybe try Basham in the middle of the three, with EEL reverting to his more comfortable role. I don't think Basham would read the role as well as Wright, but he probably would read it at least as well as EEL.
