JCR

I wouldn't take things so literally...I couldn't be arsed to spend much more time going into the detail which i have done on this very forum on the subject of JCR over the past couple of years.

Possibly the most infuriating player to play for United in a while and he is the epitomy of how bad things are right now. Talented, but applies himself terribly.

So yes, i'll summarise, he can't cross a ball. Why? Because so rarely does the possession he's had result in creating something noteworthy for our strikers.

I hope that clears things up...
It clears up your opinion, but that's it. I disagree on most, especially the application bit.

Could be worth keeping JCR as a squad player/impact sub but as you have said, his final delivery is poor to say the least. And at the moment we don't have any tall strikers for him to aim for.

The problem is JCR has always said he wants to be a first team regular even at the wrong side of 30 and doesn't seem to ever want to be just a squad player.

That's why managers have usually shipped him out and he has had more clubs than Tiger Woods.

Another one who should be no where near a side with ambitions of going for Automatic promotion from League one.

We must be realistic though. We can't 'get rid of everyone except Sharp and Long' like some people keep saying.

Certain players that aren't necessarily the best are going to be kept around to make up the squad which hopefully will see us promoted. Even players like Basham aren't the ideal answer if you ask me, but for me he's good enough and committed enough to be part of the squad next season.

We aren't going to go and sign the 10 more players that we need to make a great squad - that just wouldn't be Sheffield United if we did that.
Basham will be part of the squad as he's contracted for another year (and, in my view, a good squad member).
I don't think we will be paying people off early so just to remind you these are the people whose contracts are about to expire, so any "surprises" will relate to them:
Howard, Willis (I assume Long is staying and may already have signed a new deal)
Harris, McEveley, McGahey, McFadzen
Baxter, JCR, Cuvelier, Flynn

He should have been used more as an impact sub I'll give you that, but he shouldn't be retained.

Yes, opinions and no harm in you disagreeing. Two previous managers have tried and failed with him, he's spent his entire career fannying about with the ball and not really achieving much for the team.

I'm really done with JCR, Collins, Hammond, Coutts and the like, yes they have attributes of quality, however, the application and their overall contribution to the team is really poor, that's one thing which really can't be disputed.

To move forward we really have to stop apologising for the inadequacies of these players, because none of the above have the heart which we need to get the job done over a season.

He can cross a ball.

Type "Conor Sammon miss" into YouTube for proof.

About 228 results. Less than expected.

I have a lot of time for JCR but ultimately he's a player who isn't good enough if the ambition is promotion. Was talking to a Chesterfield mate and saying they could do far worse than him.

Thing is, we've been suffering from the problem that almost every player in our eleven is a "decent squad player". Well, sure, but decent squad players aren't hard to find either. We might as well get rid of as many as we can and give Wilder as much scope as possible to bring in quality.

Probably the only member of our squad who can take on and beat a man.

The problem comes when he then backtracks on himself, for some unknown reason, so he has to either beat the man again before popping a crap cross in, or lay it off to someone else.

He's okay, but he's not worth another year for me.

Maybe like Doyle, he will find his level in the 2nd. Not sure how much improving he's got left in him.

One player that really has to go is JCR. He's the type of player we really don't need around. Now that Wilder is in we want players with bottle, not bottlers. The guy can't even cross a ball.... which is kind of his job...
What has "bottling it" got to do with ability to cross a ball? We can argue the merits of his crossing ability until the cows come home, but one thing he always does is try. Have we just got a different idea of the meaning of the term "bottle"? :)

His failure to step up in games is what i'm talking about with bottle.

The "might be some surprises in the retained list" got me thinking...

What has he done wrong? OK, he's the wrong side of 30... so what? He's still twice as agile and athletic as the likes of Coutts. Twice as strong and productive as the likes of Scougall (who people are saying should return and be given a chance).

I feel that one of the problems this season has been a lack of subs that can have an impact on the game. Bringing DCL or Sammon on hasn't once looked like a sub that can change the game for us. I've witnessed JCR come off the bench and influence a game on a number of occasions.

He at least has the bottle to go FORWARD, take a player on and and try to create something. Right, OK, he might not have the greatest delivery in the world which can be a frustration... however I think a large part of that is down to us having a lack of targets in the box. Getting more players in the box is something Bergen Blade has explained that Chris Wilder's teams look to do.

I've seen many people list him in players we should definitely get rid of. What does everyone have against keeping him around?

I'm not saying he should be a starter but I believe he can help us get out of League 1 with a role from the bench. He's got a great attitude and one I wouldn't mind seeing retained on a 1 year deal on our terms.

I like having that kind of player in the squad but would prefer a younger option who could improve as he goes (like when we signed Blackman/ Murphy/ Adams etc,). I actually started a thread a couple of weeks ago about a JCR replacement of this ilk suggesting Sulley Kaikai, Gbolly Ariyibi etc. as possible replacements.

Couldn't agree more, I know he's not the worlds greatest crosser but even when he did get the ball to a man last season they fluffed the chances, scougs and sharp at Oldham spring to mind..

Always a threat, defenders don't like him, if only he was a centre midfielder with a decent shot..can you imagine that...

Surely more than Scougs and Sharp springing to mind, Sammon’s miss v Blackpool must be permanently imprinted on the mind

We don’t need to keep any out of contract players except Long. We’d still be left with

GK

Long

Ramsdale

Def

Wallace

Basham

Freeman

Brayford

Kelly

Mid

Coutts

Woolford

Basham (if not in defence)

Whiteman

Reed

Brooks

CF

Sharp

Adams

DCL
Done

McNulty

We need to bring in better defenders and midfielders and a target man option.

2 CBs

1 CM

1 winger

1 target man.

That’s 5 that need to come in of better quality than we have to make us competitive. Ideally an experienced GK and maybe another midfielder or two to make us stronger still would come in too. With about 7 or 8 being released on top of what Adkins got rid of over the course of last season then that should be doable IF the board are serious about having a go. But that’s a mighty big if.

The lack of subs was indeed a big problem last season and even when we did have someone of use on the bench (like JCR) then Adkins didn't use them. Keeping JCR and McNulty and using them properly could've got us in the play offs. There's no doubt we've thrown away points to save a few quid in wages.

I wouldn't be against keeping JCR if he's still athletic enough, he's getting to the age now where he'll slow down. Keep him or not though, we need to sign first choice wingers.

For all his obvious failings, he's a threat, he's exciting, he creates a buzz.

Reckon as an impact sub, he's worth keeping. And his top class attitude would be a bonus too in Wilder's efforts to knit together a squad. Really liked this snippet he had to say about mentoring Gboly Ariyibi recently

http://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/foot...r-backs-ariyibi-for-a-bright-future-1-7887988

Wouldn't say no to us trying to poach Ariyibi himself btw.

The only thing he creates is frustration and high blood pressure . Suit me if I never saw him in a blades shirt again.

I am fucked off with second or third best , and get the feeling football fans know fuck all about football.

It was fucking scandalous towards the end of the season when we are chasing a play off spot ,players on both sides are tiring and we send on Louis Reed or Martyn Woolford for the last 20 minutes when our one player (maybe Scougall too) who could run at a player and affect a game are playing out at Chesterfield and Fleetwood. What a prick of a manager we employed last season.

once a blade always a blade
liked him as a player and with comments like this he's obviously a top bloke
id buy him a pint

Isn't it weird how United fans latch on to certain players who are so fucking crap, they actually become likeable as cult players. In addition to JCR, Booker, Monty, Doyle & Porter spring to mind.

Are you listening Matt Done?
