I think a good and relevant points tally to look at from previous seasons is after 23 games, the halfway point. We'll have played 24 by the end of the year.

Point totals of the top 3 after 23 games in the last 8 seasons:

2015/16:

1. 48
2. 48
3. 47

2014/15:
1. 48
2. 47
3. 44

2013/14:
1. 49
2. 48
3. 48

2012/13:

1. 44
2. 43
3. 43

2011/12:

1. 51
2. 47
3. 46

2010/11:

1. 46
2. 40
3. 39

2009/10:
1. 56
2. 47
3. 45

2008/09:
1. 51
2. 49
3. 44

Averages:

1. 49 points
2. 46 points
3. 44 points

I've gone through our fixtures until the 23 game mark (Oldham H) and have us on 45 points. With many of the harder away games out of the way, every reason to believe we'll only get stronger and my belief that it won't take a high total for a top 2 finish this season, that would leave us in a good position. We've got to make sure we get towards that points total by the end of the year though because we have quite a favourable run of games, and I don't see any run as favourable in the second half of this season, which I think is what will prevent us from reaching 90 points.

47 points then. 2 more than I predicted, 1 above the average for 2nd place, 2 behind the average for 1st place.

Indeed, but I'm basing it around what could be considered a typical return from a period of games of a certain difficulty rather than running through each match individually. And this team's more predictable than previous ones - we're much more likely to win games we should win. In this case I don't think it's unrealistic to expect the actual points total from an 8 game period to closely resemble my prediction.

If I had to predict individual results though I'd guess something like this:

Chesterfield A - W
Shrewsbury H - W
Bury H - D
Charlton A - D
Walsall H - W
Swindon H - W
Coventry A - L
Oldham - H - W

5 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat. Given the difficulty of the games, I'd say that's around par. On current form I wouldn't actually expect us to lose any of them but you've got to allow for the odd bad result. If you offered me these results now though I'd definitely take them.

so would I, but I bet you're nowhere close.

I'm extremely confident we'll win at least 4. So I don't think I'll be far away. Will be interesting to revisit these posts on Boxing Day...

6 wins! With 1 draw and 1 defeat. Both of which should have been comfortable wins.

Better than we would have expected. It's good that we've managed to take advantage of this favourable run of fixtures we've had. Vital.

Here is the comparable for the last 11 seasons for the division winners at the half way point:

upload_2016-12-28_12-33-25.png

High: 51 - 2012 Charlton, 2009 Leicester
Low: 37 - 2006 Southend

First time all season we have gone above both the median and average.

The Footstats predictor now has us finishing second behind Bolton (their prediction model is based on goals scored and conceded), we have moved up from 3rd after the win over Oldham (we were 2nd for a long time).

I think that chart would be really good if it had the last 5 seasons on there as well so we can really compare against our other seasons in this god forsaken league.

Fuck me! It's a good job the telly is shite! On game 24 (yesterday), we have 50 points - the highest in these six, lost, wasted seasons.Last season 36 pts. Season before 36 pts. 2013/14 (Weir, Morgs and Clough) 25 pts., 2012/13 - 46 pts. and 2011/12 (when we finished 3rd with 90 points) we had 47 points after 24 games.

Let's be honest, we should really only be caring about the red line in the above. Better the red line and we'd have to be exceptionally unlucky not to go up, probably as champions.

This is the graph that I find amazing.

Last season Chris Wilder had 52 points from 25 games, this year 53 points from 25 games.

Apart from about 5 games at the start, the 2 seasons are almost indistinguishable. Let's keep that one point ahead and give him 3 figures this season (Cobblers had 99 last May).

Plenty of centuries for Rooty the Blade this year so one for Tufty the Blade next May would round it off.

Magic.

Looks like we could do with a bit of a cushion - 10 points from a possible 45 in the last 3 games over the 5 seasons we've been in the division.

That's a very good point.

Just have to be 10 points ahead if third by then I guess...

May or may not be worth mentioning that we're the only team in the top 6 that hasn't beaten a team in the top 6.

In fairness though, 4 out of the 5 of those teams we've only played away, and the only defeat was at Bolton - the others were all draws. We don't have a bad record against the other teams in the top 6.

Dare I say it but .... I think you should put a 100 point line on!? Has anyone got the time to gather yhe points of Charlton, Reading, Wigan etc ar each point in the season. I think we shoukd show a range of the teams that have achieved 100 points at each match date and plot the Blades against that.

I'm not getting arrogant. I'd still take 2nd place if you offered it now. But watching is we should be expecting to win the league. Not only that but I think we can continue this form and potentially hit the 100 point mark. I may regret my comments after a very tough February but this current Ubited team is the best I've seen since Blackwell slowly dismantled us (with great help from Birch and McCabe).

12 more wins from 21 games we go up.....can anyone see those 12 wins in our upcoming fixtures.
Can anyone see us doing worse than 9 defeats or draws?

Unless we see our usual input from the football gods to injure, maim, throw in prison or simply sell our players we really are in a position to run away with it. Dominating games is something we haven't really done in this league. And I know we were winning plenty with Wilson and Evans, but we didn't really dominate games like we are now, I always felt we were spending long periods looking like conceding, whereas now teams get the odd break away or worldy.

Fingers crossed we can keep the players and keep them fit....add one or two just in case and continue as we are. Do that and it matters not what the rest do.

To quote the great grafikhaus FFS :)

Here is the graph of the last 11 seasons:
