We've only played Northampton three times at Bramall Lane in the league, but one of them was the craziest match I've ever seen. A freezing Tuesday night in 1982, we were 6-0 up with a few minutes left, somehow the score finished 7-3.
On another note, the last time we played Northampton in the league was the 15th April 1989, the day of the Hillsborough disaster.

We haven't played them in any competition since the league cup in 1990-1.

By my reckoning, since then we've played every other current league team in a league or cup game save Barnet and the current incarnations of Accrington Stanley and Newport County.

Northampton have a terrible record against us. We've won 8 and drawn 1 of 9 games, from memory.

Wasn't there a 7-3 in the Zenith Data Systems cup (or whatever incarnation) in the early 90s? I could swear it was in our 1st top flight season where we didn't;t win a league match until the 17th game.

7-2 v Oldham. It was that season. We were losing 2-0 after 5 minutes. One of the oddest games I've ever seen.

Pissed it down for a few days before the game, should've been called off. Ball didn't bounce all night and both sides finished in all brown strip. Seem to remember crowd was decent because of free tickets for school kids. What s first game to go to!

I went to that game.

Can't remember it being particular cold but it was raining most of the match with an amazing monsoon like downpour towards the end of the 1st half.

Not 100% sure but I think it was 5-0 at half time. We should have had 10 in the 1st half alone as Northampton didn't not seem interested. I was in the Bramall Lane Upper tier and at half time a few were talking about it being a great opportunity to hit double figures or even break our scoring record.

Think we went 6-0 up quite early in the 2nd half and the record was on, we had a great chance of hitting 10.

Then (typically) we took our foot off the pedal and amazingly Northampton came back into the game.
Think they pulled it back to 6-3 and guess what?

The crowd were booing and not happy at all.
Think we scored a late goal to make it 7-3 but the amazing thing was the crowd felt frustrated leaving the ground. We had a great chance of scoring at least 10 but relaxed in the 2nd half, missed opportunity.

Also remember when the heavens opened up there were random pools of water all over the pitch and i was thinking the match could be called off because the ball wasn't rolling properly. Fortunately the rain eased off in the second half.

There was a funny moment towards the end of the 1st half when then downpour hit.
Bob Hatton was clean thru with just the goalie to beat.
He rounded the keeper just outside the area. Had an open goal and rolled the ball into an empty net at the Kop end.. The Kop were cheering before the ball hit the net because it was a certain goal
However there was a big rain puddle on the goal line meaning the ball stopped dead on the line.
Their defender came back and cleared a certain goal off the line.

I'd forgotten all about that Bobby Hatton incident!

Can't remember who it was against, but I remember Simon Stainrod doing something similar. I seem to think it would have been his hat trick. The pitch was like a mud bath he hit the ball towards an empty net, turned away with his hand in tge air to celebrate, and the ball stuck on the line and was cleared

I went to both and they are both games I remember which is unusual for me ,both for hugely different reasons. The away one I can recall every minute of that day as it built up to its horrible ending.

Home to Luton in April 1978

On another note, Northampton Town are one of eight English and Scottish league sides whose name begins and ends in the same letter. Name the others.

Liverpool, York City (do they still count?), Dundee United, Charlton Athletic and 4 others.

Three correct, York City are no longer in the Football League.

I didn't go to the 7-3 match that season but was at the away Northampton fixture the same season and we couldn't believe the swillsborough news coming in over a crackly transitor radio someone had nearby. Our game understandably became of little interest compared to what was unfolding on the radio and we were all quite numb. A terrible day for all involved and I sometimes wonder if afterwards they should have concreted over hillsborough a bit like chernobyl and turned it into a memorial. I'd been down that wretched leppings lane tunnel when packed a few times as a kid surrounded by big blokes with us all squashed in and could remember being quite frightened by it and relieved to get out at the end of the tunnel. A disaster just waiting to happen.

Luton Town if my memory serves me right

remember us winning at northampton 2-1 on a cold dry winter night
losing 1-0 till the final five minutes , we had been dreadful , didnt deserve a thing , but did a smash and grab,
was a reminder of a cricket ground set up like we had, very weird
