We also beat Northampton 4-0 in 1988, I think it was the same week that we beat Chester City.

remember us winning at northampton 2-1 on a cold dry winter night
losing 1-0 till the final five minutes , we had been dreadful , didnt deserve a thing , but did a smash and grab,
was a reminder of a cricket ground set up like we had, very weird
Was listening to it on radio Sheffield. went to the ground 5 mins from the end and still losing 1-0. No further reports, went over on the final whistle to be reported we had won 1-2. Mick Trusson scoring both goals.

The 7-3 game had seen United give hundreds of free tickets away to local schools for the Lane upper stand. Remember loads at our school (Brook) getting freebies, while I'd already got one with my first ever season ticket being on the BL upper!

Remember the reverse fixture that season, my Dad had took to me to the reserve derby at the sty (won 3-1 Bob Atkins hat-trick or was it Stuart Evans ???), all night they kept flashing the score up with United 1 down for most of the game, much to the delight of pigs in the ground. Two late goals from Mick Trusson made for a very good evening in the end :)

We've only played Northampton three times at Bramall Lane in the league, but one of them was the craziest match I've ever seen. A freezing Tuesday night in 1982, we were 6-0 up with a few minutes left, somehow the score finished 7-3.
On another note, the last time we played Northampton in the league was the 15th April 1989, the day of the Hillsborough disaster.

yes saw that game - Bob Hatton played - nice player for the short time we had him - could turn on a sixpence.

We haven't played them in any competition since the league cup in 1990-1.

By my reckoning, since then we've played every other current league team in a league or cup game save Barnet and the current incarnations of Accrington Stanley and Newport County.

Northampton have a terrible record against us. We've won 8 and drawn 1 of 9 games, from memory.

Oh good. Guess what I'm going to say next.........

No you're not.:)

It's a routine game at home, only made different for what CW did for Northampton.

I will accept that we would have had a problem before CW - he actually realises what these extra little bits can do to a team and lets every player know what could happen.

Routine team, routine game, routine win.........we move on to Bury.

Yes, we beat Chester 6-1 on the Saturday and Northampton 4-0 on the Tuesday.

We had won our other league game at home 4-1 v Bristol Rovers so it was 14 goals in 3 home games. Good times.

A painful memory.

The last midweek game I missed at the Lane, I was 13, and despite having a free ticket courtesy of school, Mum said I couldn't go.

I was so upset, she relented for the next Tue game, I believe the 1-0 v Wigan, but the damage was done, never since have we been involved in a 7-3, although we drubbed Oldham 7-2 in the Zenith Data cup??, I think it was, 25 years ago.

Had exactly the same recollection. Remember on 85 minutes the reporter saying what a poor performance it had been and we'd not had a shot on goal etc etc, then he was all excited on the full time report saying that unbelievably the Blades had won.

Yes I remember going to this game. 2-2. Just had to check the year on line. That's about all I do remember! Just seen this MOTD video. Amazing. I was stood on John St terrace but can't see myself on film!

The Radio Sheffield sports presenter Bob Jackson used to play brass band music near the end of games, to bring good luck to the local sides. It must have worked that evening!

Remember the 7-3 well. A completely surreal game that only the 4-3 v Brighton (Bassett era) came anywhere close too for craziness.

After the game they had a minibus with about a dozen fans stop in the Leeds Arms, South Anston. The poor buggers got the piss ripped out of them by the many Blades who had attended the game. No aggro though and they were a decent bunch.

Home to Luton in April 1978

100% correct Silent , as if you needed me to corroborate your tremendous memory.

Stan ( Simon Stainrod ) is from the same neck of the woods as me and we grew up at the same cricket club, I was bang in line watching him wheel away as his goal bound shot stuck in the mud at the BL end that day .

My Grandad was keen to label him a ' showboater' , a tag he didn't mind when I told him that personally a few days later .....

Saw all 3 of them , the Bristol game with my Gas supporting mate down from Newcastle Uni, went to Leadmill that night , great times and great memries.

We also beat top flight Newcastle 3-0 in the League Cup around the same time. We looked unstoppable in that spell.

I got free tickets for the Northampton game through school. It was the first time I had been to the Lane since the League Cup game against Wednesday in August 1980. For the 7-3 I remember I kept turning round as I could see Tony Kenworthy in the press box - I think he was doing summarising for Radio Sheffield. After that game I went to every remaining home game that season and became a Lane regular, so as a marketing technique, the free ticket certainly worked on me.

7-2 v Oldham. It was that season. We were losing 2-0 after 5 minutes. One of the oddest games I've ever seen.

We scored something like 4 goals in the last 10 minutes if memory serves me correctly.
