Old Photos For No Reason Whatsoever

Photography wasn't quite advanced in those days. On sunny days there would be a 'glare back' from bald heads. Bill was asked to 'sit this one out'.
Keith Kettleborough missing from a number of early 1960's photos.
Ha ha! Kettleborough was in every squad photo since he signed for us in December 1960!

I think the reason why Punton wasn't in the two squad photos was probably he was still living in the Norwich area and might have trained with Norwich but comes up to the Lane on match days

Well spotted, Highfield. There's still one of these at the roundabout at the top of Cemetery Road/Psalter Lane (at the top of Frog Walk). I used to sell street furniture so I retain an interest in these things (I was also, briefly, a member of The Letterbox Study Group, but Operation Yewtree put a stop to all that...) Anyway, back to The Brickmakers Arms and you'll see some lettering on the 'lantern' of the lighting column, which gives a clue as to where this pub was located... (the road sign is also on the pub wall, but not as visible).

Newhall Road Attercliffe. I don't think an area can have lost as many pubs as Attercliffe for the obvious reasons of rehousing and the loss of heavy industry. I bought my father in law a couple of books called "A wander up the Cliffe" and "Another wander up the Cliffe" a few years ago and he could remember all the pubs mentioned (there was quite few!). Sadly his mind isn't what it used to be and now he is unable to recall just a handful.

Love the John st picture ,egg box in the background. No one stood in front of those barriers on John st unless it was packed ,it was a nightmare coming up from the concourse and trying to get to your mates. How close together were the old dugouts too.

Immediately to the right of the empty seats (old directors box) on John St is the section of seats where I first sat with Dad & Grandad..... Dad kept his seat (Gangway 7:Row BB: seats 90 ish I think) until they knocked it down, I'd migrated to the Kop at that point.
Always remember Mrs Haslam, well I assume it was his Mrs, disappearing out of her seat in tears one Saturday afternoon when the "Haslam Out" chant started up on the kop.

You can see one of the old "sewer gas destructor lamps" in that picture. They were used to burn off excess sewer gas, which was explosive. There's still a few left standing in Sheffield, like the one on Alderson Rd at the junction with London Rd near BDTBL (one of the ladder rest arms has broken off this one)...

Not sure if it's the same thing, but there's an old gas lamp on Brincliffe Edge which still glows faintly at night in comparison to the new LEDs on the road. No idea what powers it.

Bravo sir! I remember Mick Rooker calling me a lucky mascot and asking if I'd come back every week!
T'was my 2nd United game, the first being the Northampton 2nd round match and my 3rd was the Forest home game just before Christmas. 3/3 victories when they couldn't win a bean

Why wasn't Bill Punton in the photo? There is another 1967/68 squad photo and Punton wasn't in it too

Didn't he leave close season?

Thought TC would have been on there aswell..I think Punton would have gone by then..Willie Carlin,Paddy Buckley and Colin Addison are in the insets at the top of the picture.

Sorry folks, I couldn't find a photo of Bill Punton, so here's one of Frasier Crane instead...

That'll always be my mind's view of the Lane. My formative viewing was between 83 & 92 - I think the only change prior to the Kop roof was moving the advertising boards to around the pitch when we went up to the first division.

Those were the days as a kid - before the trip to the match involved arriving seconds before kick-off. The days when I could arrive 45 mins to an hour early, read the programme, avidly watch the warm-up and take in everything the Lane experience involved. The sights, the sounds - and the smells!

This thread has been fantastic. Top work all round.

Great photo. Just shows what a huge ground we have. Wonder if there is any other privately owned land as large and as close to the city centre.

It looks as though the steps that lead down from the back of the kop to the John Street / Shoreham Street corner is the only remains of the old ground.
