It's no good 'allocating' a penalty taker in the relaxed atmosphere of the training ground.

Penalties are about belief and so any alternative taker has to WANT to take them. If Fleck and Coutts aren't that keen they we shouldn't be forcing them. Part of the reason Simmo's pen is still in orbit, is that we'd done the voluntary ones and we were moving through the rest of the team.

At least Sharp can cope with the miss. Imagine if Coutts had taken it and missed? He'd have been booed and jeered and what would that have done for him.

In an ideal world I'd say Duffy, but only if he wants the job.

I'm wondering if he can. Not scored since missing v Shrewsbury, I didn't see him play against Bury but against Charlton he looked like he may be lacking a bit of confidence, there were a couple of occasions where he could've got a shot off or off earlier but didn't.

It doesn't bear thinking about Coutts taking one and missing, he's come so far this season something like a pen miss could wreck it all.

Duffs or Fleck for me, and totally agree that whoever does it needs to want the responsibility.

I just hope he hands over the duties to someone else himself. I wouldn't want to knock his confidence any further by having Wilder tell him he's not on them anymore. It would be a lot braver of Billy to say "I'm gonna let someone else have crack next time" then put needless pressure on himself by stepping up for the next one
Don't agree Roy, CW should be saying that's you done Billy and if you don't up your game sharpish (no pun intended ) you will be warming the bench. Reputation shouldn't guarantee a place in the side, if any of them aren't doing it over a few games they should be dropped and made to fight for their place, CW has to be ruthless and have no favourites.

The penalties he scored last year.

Can you be more specific? I've just checked soccerbase and Coutts played in 1 Football League Trophy match and 3 FA Cup matches and none of them went to penalties.

Coutts scored for the U21s/reserves (whatever they are called) last season.100% record.

One was definitely against Cardiff away, watched it, the others will be on YouTube somewhere.

Of the suggested alternatives;

Coutts, would probably play it sideways or ping it on a sixpence into the corner quadrant
Fleck, nailed on over the bar
Done, would probably run round the ball a dozen times then get subbed
Lavery, will be fit to take them next season
Duffy, would probably do a 'Beckham' and slip over at the crucial point
Leon, would probably give himself a nudge on the run-up and give away a free-kick

maybe stick with Billy (if only cos I've backed him to be League's top scorer :))..........

Oh right, I thought you meant in matches that mean something and had a bit of pressure.

Ah, so that's your get out clause.

By the way, who's your pick to be our penalty taker?

It's not a get out clause, it's a bit different knocking in penalties in front of one man and his dog playing for the kids than it is with 10 minutes to go in front of the Kop when you're losing 1-0.

Duffy would be my first choice.

On what basis?

He's scored goals throughout his career, good with set pieces, experienced player who could handle the pressure and he's a definite starter when fit so will more than likely be on the pitch.

A scuffed bobbling penalty that trickles in is a good penalty, because its gone in.

it can' be said to be a good strike though, can it? Since it's not been hit cleanly. So it's not a good kick... or a good penalty kick.

Just because the outcome was positive, doesn't mean the strike/penalty kick was a good one. If I am playing poker and get my money into the middle with only one card in the deck that can save me and 40 odd that mean i lose, and then I hit the miracle card, does that make it a good play?

Protip: it doesn't.
