Best SUFC manager ever

By all accounts Harris is the stand out but in my time watching the blades, it has to be the man that brought Deane, Agana, Hodges, Kelly, Tracey etc. to the club for very little money followed by Warnock. I hope Wilder can match or even surpass their efforts.

Just occurred to me about the Harris teams. If you bolt together 1-6 from his 60's team (Hodgy, Cec, G Shaw, Richardson, J Shaw, Summers) together with 7-11 from his 70's side (Woody, Salmons, Deardon, TC, Reece) then you have potential champions and easily the best team (in my time at least) to ever grace the red and white shirts. Pity about the timing.

So, Harris its got to be. Thread closed.

In my time, the best team Sheffield has produced

I'm my time it would be Bassett followed by Warnock. I thought Spackman had great potential bit he was badly let down by the board and obviously walked. I have very high hopes for wilder challenging for the title in the future.

The right way is passing football on the ground, not in the clouds (Brian Clough). It involves passing the ball to each other with purpose. It does not feature a series of aimless long, high punts. It sees no virtue in turning a game of football into a 90 minute game of chance as to which players can win the next loose ball, given away quite deliberately. It utilises skilled midfield players, rather than giving them stiff necks as the ball flies stratosphere-bound over their heads.

The right way has been employed for decades. From the great Hungarian team that ran rings around a plodding England that thought it was top of the tree, right through Milan, Ajax and Juve to the Barca, Real, and Bayerns of today. It's the football that wins games, leagues and trophies. It's the game played by the sublime Pele, Cruyff, Beckenbauer and Messi (and their lesser equivalents lower down the ladders). It is a mystery to Vinny Jones and Wally Downes. Wally Fucking Downes.

Managers and players alike; week-in; week-out, speak of playing the game the right way, sometimes it is expressed as "playing football".

Waddle, Sheridan, Nilsson, Hirst et al played "the right way". That's all the more reason why I fucking loved it when Tracey, Gayle, Bradders, Whitehouse and various other misfits stuffed them 3-1 at their place.

Just to provide a little balance, Diplodocus Dave got us relegated twice and his "football" legacy has blighted us for decades. The attendances under him demonstrate just what many thought of his Hoof and Hope. Couldn't fill the ground even against Liverpool (27,000 for the first game) in the top division. By the time he was sacked it was sub-10,000 crowds. Many voted with their feet.

His popularity on here is far from reflective of the real world, where there exists a population that live lives outside a bubble of social media and message boards.

He is not fit to button John Harris' cardigan.

Did you enjoy them completely outplaying us from first minute to last at Wembley? It could, as they say, have been 10-1. Embarrassing, it was.

Bassett brought so.much to the fans. What were you doing during those years? Watching another team? No one really gives a monkey's what you think of Bassett.

Clearly you do, for one. Looks like a few more, as well...

Yes I really wish I'd never had that day at Leicester and obviously it was not one of the best days of my life.

Beating the unclean twice in a season was rubbish too.

Beating Manyoo at home and scoring the first ever Premier goal was worthless.

Winning away at Anfield. beating Arsenal, Chelsea and going to Wembley for the first time in my life were crap.

Bobby-Bobby-Bobby-Davison, Dane, Bradders, Deane and Agana, Bryson, Tracey, Kelly, Mel Rees (RIP), Bob Boookah, Hodgey all non players who never entertained us. Never.

Yup, Basset gave us nothing and thanks for putting me right.

Have a like Sir

I didn't enjoy the result but it was one of my proudest days as a Blade. Our biggest match for over 30 years (probably more) and an occasion that we'll probably not see again. The 5th round win over Manchester United on the way to the semi was also a wonderful example of us beating a team playing "the right way".

Also, the "it could have been 10-1" thing is a bit of a myth. I re-watched the full match a couple of years ago, and was surprised. The first half was very even. They had the better of the second half, but not by much. In extra time, though, they got on top, particularly for the last 15 minutes. But it wasn't anywhere near as much of a battering as they'd like us to remember.

I've articulated the erudite argument many times, but you choose to ignore it.

Much in the same way as when I've asked if you enjoyed Leicester 1990? You said you were there but can't bring yourself to admit what a fantastic day it was to be a Blade.

Well said. Nobody who experienced both Harris and Bassett will vote for the latter.

Harris of course for superb football and a wonderful team of heroes.

Having said that I had more individually enjoyable games under Basset so on balance if I had to choose, it would be DB. After 15 years of shite he gave us our club back and we had some fantastic days. Yes it could be appalling and it didn't end well, but please don't try to rewrite history just because you don't like his 'up and at em' game.

Who is they ?
You and the pigs ?
Reading your boring ,smarmy ,football illiterate posts you sound just like one of them and that's the biggest insult you can give a fellow blade

All the hoof ,dinosaur, crayon stuff id's just what they used to.say to us when we were both in the top division and you just just remind me of all that shit and why I'm glad to be a Blade

It was. I was there. We hardly got a kick. They had us chasing shadows.

Even Silent Blade, who I respect enormously even though we have differing views about Bassett, will say the same.
I remember when BIFA was forming and there was a meeting at the city hall - one of the first questions was "is there anyone who doesn't support the manager?". There room was almost unanimous, apart from 3 hands. Mine was one of them.

Once we fell back the 2nd division, he'd lost his mojo, and the football was amongst the worst I'd ever seen. But that said, his earlier achievement of turning us around and delivering premiership football was incredible. It's difficult for youngsters to imagine how difficult that would have been, given the shambles we were as a club. For that reason, and not for the style of football, Basset will always be rated right up there by many fans.

I doubt anything that happens football wise, for the rest of my life, will match the emotions of that day at Leicester.

Yes , it could have been 10-1, but it wasn't was it? Just like it could easily have been 1-1 and we could have won the penalty shootout.

The record book says it was 2-1 not 10-1 or 1-1.

Harris was the better manager, but let's not try and trash the memory of another good manager.

Bassett was a man of his time and for his time. A club great as a result. But his magic died with our relegation and he slowly became a coaching anachronism from that point on.

I grew up watching his teams and he was a hero to me as a kid. Wider football history certainly won't judge him as a great, but he did do great things for us.

John Harris for me for purely football and being a true gentleman reasons. He had the stature and respect of the fans and the players he worked with. No ego in him whatsoever and remembering that his stewardship was at a very different era to the one`s of Bassett & Warnock.

However, all three Blades loved & respected managers named above could be overtaken by an up and coming young manager who learned his trade at the very bottom of the ladder and at present is working his talent at the club he holds most dear.

Looking at Harris Bassett & Warnock its quite easy to see that our new manager has a bit of all three in him and I`d like to think that in say 10 years time we are all talking about Chris Wilder in the very same vein.

No doubt about this one. 9 and half seasons in top division

Quite simply, a no-brainer.
