Coutts and Duffy

Basham takes his fair share of stick on this forum but situations like this perfectly highlight his importance to the squad.

He is more than adequate cover in midfield, central defence and wing back as well. For me, that versatility is crucial to us.

Duffy is a miss but arguably we have the most cover there with Scougs, champan and potentially brooks all capable of playing there.

Coutts would be a blow given how well he is playing - we don't really have anyone else with his comfort on the ball. And I don't think scougs is strong enough in the tackle to play there especially as he is developing a goal scoring knack.

As a positive it will give someone a chance to come in and stake a claim.

If they are all unfit i'd go Bash at RWB (with O'Connell coming into back 3) , Scougal playing Duffy's role and whiteman (maybe) is for coutts.

I think Airiyibi at Chesterfield would be a great acquisition in January, looks by far the best player they have, and at the moment they might not be able to fight clubs off for long!
Big, black, skillful midfielder that covers plenty of pitch.

Basham has been a great part of this run and Wilder recognaises that. He has great energy and can pick a pass (for a centre half). But he's exactly that a good footballing centre half type not an orchestrating midfielder like Coutts or Fleck. For me I'd leave the defence as is (freeman apart) as we're hardly shipping goals and try scougall in there. Scougall for me really hasn't got the praise he deserves as our second top scorer along with chipping in with a few assists. Brown has been signed as cover for Freeman so now is his chance. Keep the shape the same but maybe look to use Clarke in place of Done

I don't personally rate Scougall and thought he was poor 2nd half yesterday.
I think he lacks strength and pace.
But he is scoring so you can't argue with his goal scoring record at the moment.

And the importance of 'black'? Are there quotas we have to adhere to?

No importance atall, just making a visual description relevant to the post and player.
No high horse required.

Ariyibi will have half the Championship after him at the reduced price he'll be available for.

Ched's more realistic for us. Would think about Jon Nolan as well, he seems decent and wouldn't cost much. He'd cover our midfielders, so is worth a mention on a thread about the injuries to Coutts and Duffy.

Im surprised Oshea got a game yesterday ,he nutted Wilson in training on Thursday.

None given, just seems odd to identify a player by his colour when it doesn't help or is called for. As for relevant to the post(?), can't see how his colour has any relevance, but there you go ;)........btw, like my horses small, just thought it's worth knowing, but I won't reveal my colour of preference.

Paul Coutts, John Fleck and Mark Duffy are all absolutely crucial. They compliment each other superbly. The heartbeat of the team. But Coutts is the one we can least do without. He's the orchestrator; the ringmaster. Everything flows through him.

Get well soon Couttsy....
Absolutely agree, Fleck has been awesome of late, but Coutts is equal to him, totally running the show first half, the pair of them.

At least these injuries will see O'Connell back in the team.

I was just thinking the same thing herruthers ..... hopefully JOC will cement his place in the side this time too as I firmly believe he's going to be very good for us for a long time to come .

If all 3 are out defence is where our priorities should lay . Bash out to RWB and JOC back at left CB

Done to keep his place and Chapman straight swap for Duffy .

The swap for Coutts , whilst clearly problematic , is made a little easier by us using the two wing backs as we won't be overrun on Tuesday night . I'd take a punt on Scougs in CM as Coutts replacement.

In the short term , well against Bury , I'd be inclined to rest all three who got knocks on Saturday if there's even a semblance of doubt about their fitness with Charlton away looming large .

So you'd still stick with Done over Scougs??

John Fleck is twice the player Coutts is. He deserves to be the subject of the big circle-jerk amongst the forum, if anyone.
You are joking Tyler, aren't you ?. If you are comparing Fleck to the Coutts of last season, then I'd agree, but Coutts has been just about his equal this season, both have been superb of late.

To be fair , I think the comparison is virtually pointless . Whilst they are both central midfielders they both offer something very different .

Both are inestimably better than anything we have had for yonks.

Well in fairness I was shitfaced when I posted that, so it came across a bit more blunt that it should.

But I just haven't bought into the hysteria that's surrounded Coutts this season. Is he a capable player? Yes. Has he improved from last season? Yes, exponentially, and he is an integral part of the team.

Fleck however is the better all-rounder for me. A very talented technical footballer who can also be tough and combative when needed. He makes things happen. He's the Michael Brown to Couttses Michael Tonge, if you will.

Coutts certainly owes us Tyler, but for me has been equal to Fleck, I'm just buzzing that we have two quality midfielders. I must admit it has taken me some time for Coutts to convince me, hope he keeps it up and manages to convince you by seasons end. Loved the Brownie/Tonge comparision by the way:D:D:D.

Both players are much better with each other ,they compliment each other and obviously enjoy it ,see the taking the piss out of each other and the brilliant first half inventive corner routines. Second half we missed Coutts and Fleck was nowhere near as productive. Duffy is the icing on the cake ,with the wingbacks making it all so fluent. Wilder needs to get Coutts signed up (and Lafferty and Freeman) but mostly Coutts to keep the Coutts/Fleck partnership. Coventry fans didn't rate him very highly , maybe he didn't have the right partner ,same with Coutts ,neither are nearly as effective with Basham.

coutts has a gash on his leg (ogogo's studs went straight through his shin pad) he'll probably be back for tuesday (but won't play 90 mins), duffy has slightly pulled his calf (like scougall did against Orient) reckon he'll be back for saturday or could be on bench against bury, freeman took a whack to his back i reckon he won't be back until walsall game tuesday after charlton

I'd definitely settle for that.

Ideally Coutts will start Tuesday and come off after 60-70 minutes if we're a goal or two up.

I just hope at least two of them are back for Charlton. I'd be happy to go there with Basham RWB and Coutts and Duffy both in the team.

Loved the Brown and Tongy comparisons too.

I'd say what makes Coutts and Fleck so effective is that both are very comfortable on the ball and can recieve a pass even when half marked up. This makes a massive difference having confidence in your colleague.

Coutts is probably the most comfortable receiving the ball and makes short passes for fun. Bet he's a great 5 a side player. Fleck has more allround ability, combative and capable of defence splitting passes.

Duffy is another one comfortable on the ball but he makes an important difference because he can take on his marker and dribble with the ball opening up space.

All 3 are intelligent players and together they are a joy to watch. I laughed at the comment about taking the pi$$ out of the opposition because sometimes we pass the ball so quickly that the opposition defenders are made to look stupid. Eventually they stop pressing trying to close us down because they get knackered chasing shadows.

Completely agree, that would be a decent outcome considering we could be losing all 3 for a few games. I hope Coutts confidence hasn't taken a knock though, that could be a bigger problem than any injury because I think that is what held him back before. Wilder seemed to get him over it once, hopefully he will again if it's an issue.

If Browns fit then bows his chance at RWB, if not then maybe Done gets put there (he used to play RB early on in his career didn't he?) with Clarke coming in with Sharp.

Bash is the natural replacement in CMfor Coutts. Not as good but the most similar we've got for that role and it brings JO'C back in to the back 3.

Chapman over Scougs for me to replace Duffy.

All that would essentially mean 5 changes but on paper that's the strongest team for me.

Don't think Done realises he has a right foot.
