On another point, apart from the afore-mentioned TV experiments, wouldn't our first live appearance in the modern era have 1990 FA Cup quarter-final v Manchester Utd when we lost 1-0? I'm not certain because I was at the game rather than watching on TV.

Don't think it was shown live on TV. Our match kicked off early. I remember watching the highlights during half time of another quarter final match that was shown live on TV later that afternoon

No, it wasn't. Not on terrestrial TV anyway. I was living in Broomhall at the time and skint so couldn't go. I definitely didn't watch it on TV and remember walking into town just after it had finished and asking a couple of Blades how we'd got on as they were walking up the dual carriageway (on the pavement, before any budding Barry Cryer tries a pun).

The highlights were shown on BBC1 during half time of the QPR v Liverpool match. I remember being annoyed that the ball had crossed the byline before Martk Robbins crossed the ball in and we cleared the chance away for a corner. McClair scored from the corner when it should have been a goal kick to us

Another classic. Memorable for Tracey knocking himself out on the post, a Mitch Ward screamer and Hutchison's terrible attempt at saving the equalizer.

The 3-2 defeat to Leeds at the end of 1991-2 was televised live. I am struggling to remember an earlier game that was live, though I may have missed an obvious one.

Was that the Gayle own goal that climched the title for Leeds with an injured Mel Rees?

I was fairly certain this wasn't broadcast live. ITV put the other side that could win the title on (Liverpool??) and ours was just extended highlights afterwards as I re3meber watching them.

The 5-5 draw at Swindon was bizarre if nothing else...

Official.

The blades first ever Live TV game was Vs Wednesday in 1992. It was on Sky it was a one one draw. Littlejohn scored opener, fatty Hirst scored the equaliser (when he should have already been red carded for a two footed tackle in the first half)

No further debate, that was our first ever Live TV game.

As WalthamstowBlade pointed out in the other day it was Blades v Birmingham on Pay TV in the League Cup 5th round in December 1966

Man U had to win at Liverpool to keep their title hopes alive but they lost 2-0. After the match ITV were interviewing Cantona, Batty, Strachan and I think McAllister at one of the players houses, Batty, Strachan and McAllister were taking the mickey out of Cantona because he was struggling to answer the interviewer's questions properly

I've seen the footage of that interview recently. It's very cringeworthy.

No, it was the other way round. We played first and then the Man U game was afterwards. I watched them both back to back at University in the TV room. They did not kick off at the same time.

I'm pretty sure that our game was live.

Anybody remember when ITV showed football league matches just after the turn of the millennium?

I remember my dad being really excited at the fact he could watch the Blades play a league match on TV, live for free.

We were on one Sunday and I remember him sitting in his chair looking suicidal for 90 minutes as we got beaten by Burnley in one of the most boring football matches of all time. Must have been the 2001-02 season.

Plenty of info here...

Different ITV regions showed different games: we were on Yorkshire TV against Huddersfield in 1995-6, but I don't think it was shown elsewhere. I do remember watching United v Grimsby in a pub in Oxford in 1996-7, so perhaps it was a bit random.

Best game I saw on TV in that era didn't involve United: Port Vale 4 QPR 4. Port Vale were 4 up at half time - what a game.

I remember a match with Kevin Keegan's Manchester City side against Tottenham. They were 3 goals down and down to 10 men at half time if I recall. Then they pulled it back and, I think, won 4-3. Nobody in the pub was bothered to start with but as this fightback proceeded you saw more and more people get drawn in.

Remember that one, Jon Macken scored the winner if I remember rightly.

I do indeed;

Remember going to watch us at my Dad's friend's house cos he could pick up Granada TV. Lost 4-2 I think at Burnley. Remember a diving header from Andy Scott.
