Always a potential banana skin this one. I am surrounded by the buggers where I live and subject to their ridicule.
I will mever forget the season they did the double over us and went down. We did get promotion though!

No fear gentlemen, lovely day to put the sods to the sword. We're in good shape, we've got good players for this division, and we have a manager who is lifting everyone's spirits. So no more of this nonsense about what our opponents will do, let's stay focused, let's build on the momentum we've begun, and let's return here later with three points to add to our tally. UTB

Jim was 6ft 8" I think, just to be accurate ;-)

Actually, I think it was 6ft 7", my mistake, found some info that he collected debts in Leeds for a bookie, someone also saying he may have had some boxing experience. A real giant of a man.

He passed away in summer 1990

Thanks for that pal. Big Jim was the biggest bloke I had seen until I started taking my kids to WWF (when they were young) at the arena.

Saying that, there was a lad on Friday night in Broomhill who was even bigger, must have been 6ft 10, and big with it. I am sure I have seen him (from a distance) on the South Stand concourse, you could not miss him!

I work with a Chesterfield fan who seems to think that this is a massive game on our radar, when I shrugged and said I thought Mansfield was their big derby.

It might be local, but it isn't a Yorkshire derby and lacks the bile of a game against Barnsley or Rotherham with scrapping on the streets.

It might be pure condescension on my part, but Chesterfield was where we played our reserve matches and although we find ourselves in the same league, I just don't see them as hated rivals.

Needlessly chippy upstarts, perhaps?

Absolutely right. Sod Chesterfield and concentrate on what Utd can do. If we play well, we will win cos we have the better players. Simple as that really. Time to have some confidence in those red n white wizards and watch them show the derbyshire druids that we are the boys.

Home of Gordon Banks and the political seat of Tony Benn, plus they have that drunkard's friend, the wonky cathedral tower.......quite a nice town centre, but that's what it is, a town, with all the village pump sensibility this suggests.....rumour has it that their squad was once made up of local farmers and returning squaddies, a heady mix that had added notoriety.........a win to the Blades, not because we're massive, but simply because this season we happen to be good UTB

It was cancer wasnt it? Absolute twat of a disease.
Think it was either a heart attack or stroke (He had a stroke some years earlier which affected his speech but he fought back well to recover and return to working as a doorman). I saw him a few weeks before his death and he was being busy in sorting the queue outside Josies. I found out the news from Richard Stacey (who worked at Josies) when he was driving me from a 6 a side cricket tournament at Whirlow Park to town. He was upset at the news

I have worked in Chesterfield for 22 years and the Chesterfield fans are always excitable when we are due to play them soon. They always have this idea that they are our big rivals!

"Personally, I don’t consider the game a derby in the traditional sense..."

Because it isn't one. Our derby is against the pigs. The rest are just other games. It may be their cup final, for us it's just another game.

Not for Blades who live or work in Chesterfield it isn't. Not the derby but more than just another game.

Born and bred in Tinsley. Chesterfield signed him from Rawmarsh Welfare
My Dad was born and bred in Tinsley and was mates with his big brother who I think was called Martin and went on to be a bookie.

Dad recalled a ' snotty nosed' young Gordon interrupting their football games on Tinsley Rec asking for a game , of course they agreed as long as he went in goals ....

Bit worried. It sounds like one of 'those' games. If we lose, it's surely better to lose against relegation-fodder than one of our rivals.

Next goal winner.

Chezzy doing a job on us so far but we look livelier 2nd half. Just as I type this we equalise!!!!:)

There for the taking now!!!

Thankyou Blades. I can wander the streets of Chesterfield.....and work.......free of ridicule.
Sat and watched it with a "Tairn" fan who upped and went when Billy scored.
