Didn't think it was, mainly put it up to show advertising boards round the pitch:)

Birmingham played three up front in those days. Trevor Francis, Bob Latchford and to my mind the best of the bunch Bob Hatton. Francis and Latchford went on to greater things but Hatton I suppose would always be described as a journeyman footballer.

What was the commentary for Addo's winner in the Everton game please?

It was as emphatic as Reece’s goal:

“…Tony Currie…Woodward…and Woodward slips his man…he’s gonna get to it…Alan Woodward…Addison….IT’S THERE! IT’S THERE! COLIN ADDISON HAS DONE IT! A SUPERB GOAL! ALAN WOODWARD PIN-POINTED THAT! AND IT’S THE HEAD OF COLIN ADDISON WHICH PUTS IT THERE!!..."

Thanks Highfield! Watched the highlights of the match and thanks to you I finally get the commentary of the goals nearly 47 years later!

Hatton left Carlisle for Birmingham 6 months after this photo was taken

Great thread, this, and I'm pretty certain Lydon is correct.

I actually remember the game. It was about a fortnight after my seventh birthday in my first season of watching the first team. I can distinctly recall it being sunny, the pitch being bumpy and the match having an atmosphere which seemed unusual to me at the time but which I would now recognise as an "end of season" air with nothing riding on the outcome as far as United were concerned, although, as it turned out, we were smack in the middle of a shocking run during which of the last eight games of that season we drew one and lost the other seven. That took us down to a final position of nineteenth but we were never in any danger of relegation at any stage.

Anyway, I remember it was the first time I saw Bob Widdowson. I'd never seen anyone other than Hodgy in the nets and I was probably paying him particular attention because of that. The thing that really sticks in my mind, though, is that I was right at the front on the Kop more or less in line with the left goalpost (as viewed from behind the goal) and there was definitely a point in the game where Widdowson got his studs tangled in the side netting and was in real difficulties extricating himself as Wolves launched an attack. I don't know if he'd gone into the back of the goal to get his cap or what but I have an absolutely clear recollection of the crowd laughing their heads off as he struggled to get free.

I'd almost forgotten it but I'm absolutely certain it happened and that it was in that match. It's amazing how random memory can be.

I also remember the last match of that season at home to Leeds. My dad took me and my brother in the John Street Wing Stand nearest the Kop. There was a fight just along from us in the same stand and it turned out to involve a bloke who lived at the top of our road and whose sons attended my primary school. My mother was scandalised when my dad told her.

You aren't missing much. The commentary for Hodgy's penalty save is just "Great save, glorious save, wonderful save..." Alreight pal, thas gorra thesaurus...

That was against Blackburn two months earlier. The tv cameras missed our first two goals due to a technical problem but filming was just back on in time for Hodgy's penalty save.

Alan Ball gave Everton the lead in the FA Cup match from a penalty after Hodgy brought down Johnny Morrissey who pounced on a poor back pass by Badger

I've a newspaper cutting from the match. Think it's from the Sunday People ...

'this was Sheffield United's finest triumph for years - the day they came from behind to hammer one of the greatest sides in the country.'
'They (Blades fans) had seen their team hit the Everton crossbar no less than three times, only to turn round a goal down. But the second division promotion hopefuls stormed back with ferocious power and spirit.'
'Twice in the first six minutes United shattered the Everton defence only to see the Merseysiders saved by the woodwork.'
'Woodward who has interested Everton this season placed a cross perfectly to the far post and Reece headed a great equaliser.
'Everton were clearly rattled. Woodward went on to pull back another measured centre and this time Addison was on the spot to plant a header beyond West and into the bottom corner. It was all over....'

Wednesday were at home that day and beat West Brom. Can't recall any South Yorkshire Police insisting playing on different days. They were chosen to be on MOTD but I would say our game was the performance and result of the day.

I remember it being on Sunday TV but I think ITV showed their matches in particular regions - Yorkshire Television. Our performance that day deserved national recognition.

It was a bit before my time, but did a show like that have, say, a full hour or 45 minutes of highlights from that match, or was there a lot of other stuff on?

Generally a main featured game of highlights for approx 15-20 mins - with ads in the half time break - then a series of shorter match highlights from others.
It was in black and white in our house
Very little punditory in those days until they started using ex footballers to host.
Derek Dougan - as stiff as a board on camera - decent CF for Wolves in his day.

Was that the game in which Trevor Francis broke his leg or was that a year (or two) later? - I was at that one and there was a lot of fighting at the Lane End.

I thought Birmingham wore that shirt with the broad white stripe down it in the game he broke his leg?

ITV showed regional matches. Commentators were Keith Macklin in YTV (preceded by Danny Blanchflower, succeeded by John Helm and Martin Tyler), Midlands TV or ATV had Hugh Johns, Granada had Gerald Sinsdat (remember the commentary Everton v Blades in April 1975), London or LWT had Brian Moore (brilliant commentator).

MOTD usually showed one match but for FA Cup Saturdays they showed more. That particular day (January 3rd 1970) as well as the game at Hillsborough the BBC featured Bradford v Spurs and Hull City v Man City. Very Yorkshire based but maybe the BEEB didn't want to slum it at a three sided ground.

They were happy to slum it at a ground where the kop had no roof though. And it stunk of shit.

Don't remember Francis breaking his leg at the Lane. Looked up his appearances for Birmingham per season. He played only 23 games in the 1974-75 season and the week after we beat Birmingham 3-2 in October 1974, Birmingham played Chelsea and it states in the below match report that Francis just had an op in hospital after a ruptured knee tendon.

Looking at the stats, Francis had a pretty good scoring record for that season (including 13 goals in an 8 match spell) but I will add that this info was gleaned from a questionable source ...... which also states for their away fixture in S6 the attendance figure was just 13,138....... wiki eh.................

I agree. Ours was the performance of the day. But for some reason I can't quite put my finger on I've always enjoyed seeing what Tony "Bomber" Brown got up to that afternoon as well:

Scunthorpe, featuring a very young Kevin Keegan, won at Hillsborough in the next round. We got stuffed at Derby in an absolutely packed Baseball Ground. It was mortifying to see Willie Carlin shining for them.
