A good point, but when the South Stand opened, where the dugouts removed from John Street side?

Anyway, its the Brylcreem hair styles in the crowd what look old to me. My old man used it.
Think it was 1981-82 when we started having dugouts in front of South Stand. I remember John McSeveney (Porterfield's assistant) being small enough not to bang his head against the roof of the dugout when standing up straight

Definately early 80s before the dug outs were used in the South Stand. Whilst the SS was built mid 70s it wasnt finished off and furnished inside til the 80s. I remember United running out of the John Street side until then (the changing rooms were also in the John Street stand) and the manager sitting in the white brick dugouts in the JS stand also. Distinctly remember all the United management and sub (and Kenworthy who was dropped from the squad on the day) sitting in the dugout on JS when we lost to Walsall in May 81. So the earliest we used the South Stand was division 4 and August 81.

It looks like Hodgy was wearing the white collar as he did in the mid 1960s just like in the photo below (Northampton 0 Blades 1 in October 1965)

I reckon it's Jim Brown in goal against Oxford

We did wear white socks in the second half of the 1964-65 season. See below photo of the minute silence for Winston Churchill before the FA Cup match against Villa

I thought the white socks had two red stripes on the cuff because being on John Street for a reserve game the ref queried a clash and John Short was telling the players to unroll the sock tops which were rolled over to be all white when they had two red hoops on them.

Ok but I reckon it's Oxford early 80s

[QUOTE="Bladesway, post: 1141996, member: 2509"I'd say 1980 but could be wrong.[/QUOTE]

Please look at the photo again and you will see there are no advertisements on the John Street railings. There were plenty of them in the 1980s.

Another strong clue on why the photo is from the 1960s!!!

The team on the date Lydon suggests was

Widdowson, Badger, Shaw(G), Kettleborough, Mallender, Matthewson, Woodward, Wagstaffe(T), Allchurch, Birchenall and Hartle.

Looks like Kettleborough on the penalty spot and Badger Matthewson and Mallender in the area perhaps

Wagstaffe standing out of the way about 20 yards outside the penalty area maybe.

We lost 2-0 by the way - I would have been there but obviously cannot remember.

Yep, think Lydon gets the cigar. Definitely mid-sixties, as mentioned earlier the clues are brylcream, no adverts on JS plus there's a couple of flat caps on show if you look closely.

I think that is indeed Bob Widdowson in goal. It's not Hodgy's gait and it looks like he has his sleeves rolled up which Hodgy never did. I remember Widdowson as reserve keeper. He was at the Lane donkey's years yet only played a handful of games as Hodgy was hardly ever injured. He was also as ugly as fuck and had a massive hooter.

And that's got to be Woody on the half way line. That's as close as he ever got to the defensive action, bless him.

And by the way, that striker on the far side is offside.

This shows that there were adverts all along the John Street railings by the start of the 1969-1970 season...

So this photo is certainly post 1961 (floodlight) and pre 1969. Which we already knew.

Love the commentary for Reece's goal v Everton at 5:37
"...a good cross...and a beautiful header... IT'S THERE! A SUPERB GOAL! WHAT A WONDERFUL GOAL BY GIL REECE! WHAT A WONDERFUL GOAL! GIL REECE HAS SCORED A PICTURE GOAL! GORDON WEST NEVER MOVED!!!..."

Interesting. What was the commentary for Addison's winner? Love the way Woody flicked the ball past England international Brian Labone, leaving him for dead before racing away to cross for Addo

As an aside, does anyone know the title of the music at the very beginning of this video. I'd like to know what it is. Cheers.

Most definitely not! Heavy rain throughout the match. Steve Kindon rounded Jim Brown only to slip in the heavy mud and mishit the ball which went wide. We all laughed at him but he had the last laugh getting 2 goals in their 4-1 win
Didn't think it was, mainly put it up to show advertising boards round the pitch:)

Oh Well by Fleetwood Mac when Peter Green was in them.
