Striker with best heading ability?

Tap in or header? From the photos I saw it looked like a tap in

I'm racking my brains here Silent trying to picture how it was scored. There are other goals playing in my mind. If it was a header it was a stooping header but I've also got an image of him smashing the ball in rather than a tap in.

This was before Lane Line Up as a match day programme when photos of the previous match used to be featured so I 've not got a record of it.

Probably not the best header of a ball, but the best headed goal ever for me was Bobby Davison's diving header at the sty to go 3-1 up and to well and truly stun the delusional filth. It will be one of the fondest memories I recite on my death bed.

I saw the Morning Telegraph photos in the Local archives at the Library. Peter Wicks failed to hold the ball, Punton then tapped the ball in

I clearly remember it as a tap in but it's been suggested so many times on here that it was a header that it's made me doubt my own memory. One thing I am certain of is that it was at the right hand side of the goal as viewed from the Kop. Right by the post.

Only one. The second goal was at the other end and scored with his feet I think.

He scored a beautiful header from a free kick against Reading on his return to the Lane.

Huh. That header is engraved in my brain.

Thing is, at the time we would have said let him play for them, he's past it. Blades 0 Peter Withe 2

We had no choice. Roger Hansbury was on loan from Birmingham and was our only fit keeper.

Agree - but Flo also scored one of the best headed goals I have seen away at QPR. A cross with not much pace, he had to generate the pace and direction with a header from about 12 yards into the top corner. A great headed goal.

Other great headed goals:

Chief away at Wolves - similar to the Flo one.

John Francis naturally.

Flo got another one like that when we beat Wimbledon 2-1 early that season. He didn't do it very often, but when he connected it was impressive.

I always felt a bit sorry for Flo. He was signed to replace Deano, which was playing out of position for him, and he gave it his best shot, but couldn't do enough to keep us up. He had no luck the following season in front of goal either.

Slight diversion from the topic (but only slightly) - any standout diving headers?

I can't think of too many. Carl Veart at home to Arsenal in the Cup in the mid 90s, Davison's second away at the pigs was a sort-of diving header... any more?

Paul Stancliffe's bullet header in our 3-1 win over Preston in 1989.

It was a header into his own net, but it was still the finest diving header I've ever seen from a United player.

Hodges v Luton (Most un-Basset like goal ever, length of the pitch move form the 'keeper, back heeled passes ad everything)
Hoyland v Palace (he managed to get 6 foot in the air and horizontal for it, brilliant header)

John Francis.

Like bendy busses and white dog shit, you just don't seem to see diving headers anymore.

As soon as I saw "diving headers" I thought of Veart too. Also, Dane Whitehouse scored a late winner v Boro in the 97-98 season with a diving header following a Vas Borbokis free kick.

I also think Shaun Murphy needs a mention on this thread. Not a striker admittedly but never seen a footballer who loves to head the ball so much. It could come to him 2 feet off the ground and he'd still stoop to head it rather than use his feet.

Remember his battle with Dave Challinor, who used to take those massive long throws for Tranmere? Murphy dealt brilliantly with that.

Best diving header I have seen was Gil Reece against Birmingham in April 1971. That was his second goal of the game, his first one was memorable too, he beat 3 or 4 players in a mazy run before slotting the ball past Mike Kelly (Birmingham's keeper). Woody got the other goal in the 3-0 win

If you can show the Colin Addison header against Everton Jan 1970 you'll see the similarities.

bornablade . Here are the photos. Saw the highlights of the match on YTV in next day. Became a committed Blade since then,2-0 win against Preston two weeks later (Reece and Addison scored again) was my first as a Lane regular

Booker v QPR to secure our place in the top flight
Jock v Forest (3-2 win same season)
Jock v Everton away (rose and hung for about 10 secs, brilliant header!)
Hodges v Luton
Hoyland v Palace
Deane v Man Yoo (1st prem goal)

The Jock headed at Everton, was that the one that looped into the far corner, it seemed to go in in slow motion and, because it was at the far end there was a gap between it hitting the net and us all going mad - great times.

Nick Montgomery and Mark Patterson were neither known for goal scoring or heading ability - but both scored headed goals from the edge/outside of the box. Monty was at Crewe and Patterson's was at home but cannot remember who it was against? Maybe his old club Bolton? Silent Blade help please!

Wasn't that his first home game. Remember walking home from that thinking we have a Norwegian international better than Deano here who has managed to bully and out muscle the most physical defence in the league. Not only that but that Swede centre half Wirmola is a reyt player - Scandinavian Blades, we are going places this season.....

Patterson's long range header was against Birmingham on Boxing Day 1995 in Kendall's first home game.

I seem to remember Bill Punton's goal against the pigs as a deft lob to the top right corner of the goal at the kop end. Definitely not a header.

Anyway, the story of this game took a familiar line. Pigs spunked big money on Iron Lung (ask your dad). Blades responded by emptying the kitty to the tune of £10k on Bill Punton as cover for Gil Reece who was out long term with a broken leg. Pigs bigged-up Iron Lung pre-match and made the usual predictions on how many they were going to beat us by. Predictably SWFIUA and Bill scored his one and only goal for us with aforementioned deft lob.

Bill's cameo that day was a la Bobby Davison but 10 times better.

Punton's deft lob was against Fulham in the FA Cup replay. He scored twice in the 3-1 win. We wore all white and Fulham all red

SheOTE="e17blade, post: 1135570, member: 8804"]Another vote for Withe from me. He was also the best at chesting the ball down that I have ever seen.[/QUOTE]
When he chested it he looked like he was handballing it as he seemed to use his arms to help him control it. Also lol at Withe's backflicks.

Ron Simpson ( left winger) who couldn't head a ball to save his life scored an amazing headed goal.
I was still at school and used to go on Bramall lane end in those days
A right wing corner came in the ball pitched somewhere around the penalty box, Simpson met the ball with his head as it bounced up and the ball flew into the net. A great goal or a fluke? a fluke in my book, I can still visualise it now.

Both goals start from 8 mins 30 seconds in below video. Woody provided both crosses

My dad speaks highly of Gil Reece. Of course, this is all well before my time!

Woodward certainly knew how to deliver a ball, didn't he?!

What I like about watching that archive footage is that I find myself saying "go on" and "get in" and stuff... these matches are from before I was born, I've never seen any of these people play, but it still feels good watching them hit the back of the net!
