There was so many stand out performances today it is hard to single anyone out for special praise. But for me one player who hardly ever gets noticed on the pitch is one of the big reasons behind our surge and that man is Jake Wright. He won't get the headlines, he won't even get out of his own half (even for a corner) but what he brings is what we have been missing for a long time. He controls the movement of the back line, tells them where to stand, who to mark, when to go, when to stay, he is the calming influence over EEL and young O'Connell, he never stops talking and directing, in fact I would go as far as saying he owns everything in his own half of the pitch. Fleck was outstanding today but for once lost possession 30 yards out, the Vale opportunity went to waste but it was noticeable to see Wright have a little word with him, point out what he should have done and then pat him on the back.

Sharp is the captain, but this guy is the leader.

Don't like to single them out, but...

Communication, decision making and confidence from the keeper.

Organisation and calmness from Wright (look so much more well drilled when he plays).

Calmness and getting nearly the complete game from Coutts.

Makes such a difference to the panicking, quiet, lack of spine we've been recently used to.

Well said

Very good OP.....astute bit of management from Wilder in both signing him, and then bringing him in to solve a problem.
The formation we have suits the players well, none more so than Wright who's lack of Pace and height is more than covered by the two alongside him. Becoming our very own Baresi or Beckenbauer tidying up and leading his troops.
And to cap it all off, the lads alongside him will be learning a hell of a lot.

OK so we now have a defence defending and a midfield midfielding, so when are we going to get the strikers striking ?

Got to say it has turned out to be an astute signing so far. I assumed when he signed it was for cover in case of injury and didn't expect to see much of him.

You can tell he's not played above this level before when he is on the ball but in terms of organisation and helping the younger lads O'Connell EEL have looked better players for having him in there with them

Not sure MOM keeping in mind they had nothing up top but yes a decent performance apart from that shocking tackle which was a cert yellow.

Beat me to it BW. I said exactly the same leaving the ground. EEL, Coutts etc have all come in for special praise of late and rightly so. In the meantime Jake "no nonsense" Wright has stepped into the side when we were all over the place and steadied the ship with a no fluster, calm head. He organises, encourages, is a born leader that just gets on with the job. Once again he was immense today. At the moment his name on the team sheet is an absolute no brainer. Long may it continue

Absolute bargain and just the type of player we've lacked for many seasons.

Actually I thought it was a straight red.
Wonderful save by our keeper afterwards.
Great performance by the team Keep it up.

Oxford dropped a massive clanger deeming him not good enough, fantastic old fashioned centre back that commands the back line well.

Many was worried about him not stepping up in this league including myself. Guess we was wrong, Great Defender.

You don't need quality players in every position in this league. He has limitations but as I said, this back three has a great balance and it makes the job easier for each of them individually. He's got two big, strong athletes to the side of him who can both play in the full back positions, and one of them is good on the ball. All three of them are talkers as well.

If it's looking like 3-5-2 is going to be our preferred formation all season it'll be interesting to see if we look to upgrade on him in January (Craig Morgan?).

We've not lost with Wright in the side. Anyone else noticed that?

Talker, organiser, reads the game, makes other players better.

Yes. I mentioned him before the Oxford game as I felt it was time to bring him into the side and give him a try, he had a reputation as a leader/organiser and we we seemed to be lacking that. I don't think it is a coincidence that our fortunes turned then though obv. other factors at play as well such as Moore.

We've got a lot of captains on the pitch this season. Sharp IS. Basham is VICE, O'Connell takes the armband when those two aren't on the pitch. Then we have Wright who was Oxfords captain and Moore who I can hear from Gangway G on south when he's at the Kop end.

Slightly off topic but is there any reasoning behind the J. M. Wright he wears?

If it's because we have two Jake Wrights, I thought we were separating them by using jr and sr, besides JW jr. isn't currently at the club.

Theyre not father and son so I imagine the younger one would feel belittled slightly having junior on his shirt.

He might not have the legs, but he organises the 2 young pups next to him and is positionally sound. I find him very calming and seemed to be first to every ball into our box
