I thought we were going to win, having actually survived a 2 legged tie against Ipswich (where we never won) and having hammered Palace a few weeks before.
These days, as you say, I expect nothing in such situations.
I went to Wembley that day, and had the only Palace fan in the United end sat next to me that day. My late father who was a big Crystal Palace. We stayed at my Grandma and Grandads in Croydon that day, and he took me out with his old friends who were all Palace fans and i got the pissed ripped out of me that night. As a lad i got took to a lot of Palace away games when they played up north, used to really enjoy it even though i was always a Blade,
Feel like I've mentioned this a couple of times already on here so apologies if I'm starting to sound repetitive...
My first was a 6-0 win vs. West Brom in February 2000.
I must be the worst 'glory hunter' around.
I was there that day, i lost my first mobile phone, an old Motorola and it got found by a kid in Beighton and i had to make the bus ride over from Chapeltown to Beighton to pick it up, and gave the kid who found it a fiver........
Me - Middlesbrough Sept 85 - lost 1-0
Mrs B - first and last Wigan H 03/04 - 1-1.
I'm sure Mrs B has been to more games than that, i remember that one, i went out and got slaughtered with Finny after. Christmas game.......
Interesting to know how different people get to watching the Blades, my dad lived in Sheffield briefly when young but always followed them with his brother when they left. I naturally supported the team my dad did when I was 5/6, first game in 1989/90 season Spurs at home I'm pretty sure we drew 2-2 and I stood on the kop.
I also watched Chesterfield a lot as a youngster as I played for them and got free tickets to the home games and occasionally had to ball boy but I'd never miss a Blades home game.
Then when I was 15/16 I watched the Blades everywhere with the help of a p/t job. Played on Saturdays at a semi pro level for 2/3 seasons at 18 until 21 so stopped watching again then got injured and couldn't get fit enough to play at that level so went back to boozing and watching the Blades home and away.
Kids and the fact I know live a few thousand miles away mean I don't see them much anymore and although I keep up with things I really don't miss it. I will try and catch the Boxing Day game but in a 2 week return there are tonnes of people to see so it might fall by the wayside.
We will return to the UK in a few years and I'll take my lad to the lane for years or torment and false hope. I'll drag the girl along as well if she doesn't go down the Barbies and dancing route her mum will want her to!
I got in to it thanks to my Grandad and Uncles on my Mums side. My Mum wasn't in to football with the notable exception of a teenage crush on Alan Birchenall, and my old man was a Crystal Palace fan. I grew up as a small child in the pig stronghold of High Green, however my Grandad took me to my first few United games and i liked United. Our old next door neighbour was a huge pig fan and i was mates with his lad, and they took me to Hillsborough in a vain effort of porcine conversion, one saturday on the old kop. It had no roof on it, i disclosed the fact that i liked United to another kid who gave me a chinese burn and made me cry until i turned in to a Wednesday fan, i refused and it didn't have a roof so i also got pissed wet through. A cold, wet miserable day, but it was life affirming.....
Mine was Blades 0-1 Walsall, the last game of the 01/02 season. God knows what grabbed me about it, the game was dreadful! At least a 2-1 win against Liverpool made up for it later that year (my 3rd game I think).
I was there, a lot of Unitedites weren't too disappointed as a Walsall win increased the likelihood of Wednesday getting relegated to the old Third Division.
My first game was a night match, i was staying at my Grandma and Grandads, Grandma went to the bingo, Grandad wanted to go to the match, so he took me along. Old 4th Division, i saw us beat Northampton 7-3, then 4 years ago i decided to take Brownie jnr to his first game and joked he wouldnt see a 10 goal thriller. It wasn't far off as we watched United beat Bournemouth 5-3
