Five years after retiring, Espen Baardsen described to the Observer in 2008 his final day in football: “I had been living out of hotels and suitcases for months. It was in a Tesco in Sheffield that I reached my lowest point. I went into Neil Warnock’s office to negotiate my wages and he offered me less than what a tube driver earns. I turned it down. I got bored of it. I felt unsatisfied intellectually, I wanted to travel the world.”

To be fair for a run of the mill back up keeper I bet it wasn't a bad wedge. I'll let him do my god forsaken job for much less than a fucking tube driver earns.

True but he's now a fund manager for an asset management company (which he's partner of) so he's probably not short of a few quid.

At the end of negotiations it gave Warnock the opportunity of saying 'Every Little Helps'.

I didn't know that SUFC had ever gone so far as to set up an office in Tesco, but I knew that they'd had various managers 'shadowing' some of the staff there a few years back to see if they could crib any marketing techniques.

In the end they did put some of Tesco's sales techniques into practice - one of the first obvious examples was the BOGOF deal with Spurs for the two Kyles.

United had got the wrong end of the stick and just thought it would work if they threw Walker in for free having received a a decent whack for Naughton.

Spurs hadn't expected Walker at all but are still very happy with the charitable donation that we made which is of course the main thing.

I remember Mido signed for Boro I think for £1k per week to get fit and scoring again but he was a bit of a head case and not many clubs would have him.

TBH I was fucking shocked to find out that a train driver could earn 60k a year. They don't have to turn a wheel, worry too much about other traffic, just start, accelerate , brake and then stop at the right station. Surely this is not worth £60k??

Well you airily dismiss the value that train drivers provide. What do you do that's so valuable?

No I didn't. I was just shocked, when I heard what the salary for a train driver is. Compared to a bus driver, who has the same responsibility and required education level and who has to contend with other vehicles, turning, collecting money etc being a train driver is a very well paid job.

They get paid that much because a) they have a strong union and b) they tend to be at the brunt of an appalling suicide at least once during their career.
