In 2008 a Football Association arbitration hearing ruled in favour of Sheffield United in their claim for compensation from West Ham over the Carlos Tevez affair.

(BBC)

What good has it done us?
Non whatsoever but that's the fault of those running our club. Since that happened West Ham got relegated and went straight back up because they did things properly. We wanked around with idiots in charge pissing the money away until it had gone.

HEY!, we payed off the hotel with that money...now, whatever happened to that!?!?!?

No it didn't do us much good, then again we could of been even worse without it.

I don't care what anyone says, we were robbed , there cheating bastards and i'll be bitter about it untill we get back to the premiership (if we ever do)

gonna be another hundred page thread if were putting a picture up of all the waste of money people associated with us in the past 8 years.

Apart from West Ham's clear underhand dealings, we have to take responsalsibility for our sheer incompetence with the way we used the payment we received.

I find this worrying simply because if we can't be trusted with millions of pounds, how would the board cope with the oil-gush of money that would come our way if we ever arrived in the Premiership? There doesn't seem to have been the type of well judged financial planning we'd have hoped for. The most vocal defence of why the club is where it is today has been McCabe's claim that we're the unluckiest club in the league. I listened to this as it left McCabe's lips and struggled to accept that our co-Chairman genuinely believes that luck, the unknown, the stuff of fairies, is what has prevented us from progressing.

Probably best for you if we never get promoted then - means you won't have anything to worry about!

Why bring this old chestnut up again
we blew the money soon be 10 years
ago, we have moved on hopefully with a brighter future, taking on board all the mistakes made by the owners. No amount of talking will do any good let's put it to bed,Amen.

8th anniversary today.
Some of the crew on here weren't born at the time, only fair they get to know our history.

Putting it to bed could almost be as inexcusable a mistake as the original offence of poorly judged use of the money we received. Never, ever, forget the errors of the past, otherwise they'll come back to haunt us.

Going right back to our school days we learn history but we are never taught how to learn FROM history. Politicians, football chairmen et al still making the same mistakes even though we've lived through exactly the same circumstances.

I think we have had bad luck. In Wilson's season alone, Maguire and Lowton got suspended at the same time Collins was absent due to his Dad passing, we lost a couple on the trot which cost us ultimately. The same season Evans was convicted just before the season's end, leaving us with Hoskins. I thought we were pretty unlucky that year.

That being said, the major contributing factors to our decline haven't been to do with luck:
  • Signing the wrong sorts of players: older players, players on their way down and journey men. (Ugo Ehiogu, Lee Hendrie, Gary Naysmith, Barry Robson, Dave Kitson, Woolford and Hammond)
  • Not having adequate cover at centre half since 2011 until now.
  • Not having a consistent goal scorer since 2012 until Sharp arrived. (No player managed more than 14 goals a season between Evans and Sharp.)
  • Arguably not having a convincing goalkeeper since Kenny, hopefully Moore can change this.
  • Picking the wrong managers.
  • Selling assets for less than they're worth and/or not replacing them. (Murphy, Maguire, Blackman, Lowton and Beattie)
  • Paying championship wages to league 1 players.
I'd say it's 5% luck, and the rest is down to bad decisions from the owners, board and management. (There's plenty I've missed)

We already had more than enough money after relegation to sort ourselves out and get back up, how the club managed to squander the Tevez money on top of that is absolutely scandalous. No thought or consideration involved whatsoever, and we're still reaping the rewards.
