We weren't a 'club like us' until Diplodocus arrived. We were much admired for our stylish, entertaining football under the late great John Harris, whose cardigan Bassett was not fit to button.

I don't recall many people admiring our football under Billy McEwan, which is who Bassett came in to replace.

I haven't read the book and won't, I have seen the film, though. It's truly embarrassing to hear Bassett expound his anti-football philosophy and watch his team bring pub football to the Professional game.

You might rightly say "it worked" but not for long and, like all dinosaurs, he hadn't the ability to adapt. He's highly thought of at Plough Lane and BTDBL. He doesn't get a mention at the rest of his numerous clubs.

A true legend in his own postcode.

Oh, and Wally Downes. Wally fucking Downes!

I was still a pre/early-teen when Bassett was manager so can't really defend the merits of the football we played . Throughout the book though he does say the film made about "the crazy gang" is total nonsense . The reason he wrote this book was to set the record straight. Every person interviewed in the book slates the documentary for its exaggeration on what went on at Wimbledon.

I haven't seen the film to be honest and I don't want to. I don't like the billy big bollocks shit that Vinnie Jones has somehow made a career from and I think John Fashanu is a very shady individual to say the least

I'm trying not to use this word much on here but Fashanu was a cunt.

Sorry it's a bit early. I'd go for same again, 3-5-2 but with Fleck sitting just behind Coutts, Lavery in for Done and Ebanks-Landell for Wilson. Sort of like a back 6 when we're defending, and a 6 behind Sharp when attacking.

Possibly a bit harsh to leave Basham out but I really think Fleck over the course of a few games has shown he's got something about him where as Basham not so much, although he was quite a bit better against Gillingham.

.............................................Moore
..............Ebanks-Landell.....Wright......O'Connell
Freeman.............................Fleck..............................Lafferty
...................Duffy................Coutts.............Lavery
............................................Sharp

Subs: Ramsdale, Wilson, Hussey, Chapman, Basham, Clarke, Done

Moore
Freeman Ebanks-Landell Wright Lafferty
Basham
Fleck Coutts
Done Sharp Lavery

Subs: Wilson, Hussey, Oconnell, Clarke, Duffy, Chapman, Scougall

I think basham will always be playing, holding midfielder and only real defensive minded midfielder we have.
Fleck is a real talent, clear our best ball player and if fit which I think he will be he will play.
We lack some ability upfront, I think Lavery will play to bring in a new dynamic, done and sharp to do same roles but done on wing.
Lafferty was solid last week so he will start, Only real one I think may not start is Landell, be between him and Wilson, will be interesting to see who Wilder plays.

Given the sparsity with which you employ the word cunt BB, I think you've popped your cherry and joined that select bunch on here who relish any opportunity to use cunt as a descriptive weapon. I include myself in this group and feel there ought to be something to denote those who proudly use cunt to get to the bone of the bone.

il cuntismo duce (or summat along those lines) UTB

I've used it before, usually Curran related.

Smile...I think most of us have our bete noirs at some point or other. We all like a trier (Bob Booker being a good example), but someone who flatters to deceive, well that's the straw that usually breaks the camel's back.
Especially when they've scored for the dark side against us and relished doing so.

A rare example of someone who gave his all in a Blades' shirt was that wee Scot, Jeff Young. At times completely bonkers in the way he'd go through a brick wall or anything he considered worth chasing. Not here very long if I recall but loved his kamikaze attitude.

Not heard of him. Are you thinking of Jeff King?

It's funny you seem only to have a comma, a few spaces and a couple of words between Harris and Bassett and, rather conveniently, seem to have missed a quick trip around the very bottom of the league and several managers who weren't fit to talk of either Sir John or Harry. Our "stylish and entertaining football" wasn't even a memory for a generation of fans.

Sadly, your inability to give Bassett the praise he deserves for his efforts at the club, does your whole persona on this site quite a disservice.

Senior moment, many thanks for rescuing me BB. Yes, it was King, a complete nutter of the Glaswegian variety.
Yes, Jeff Young was an RnB/soul DJ on Radio 1 in the late eighties, as far as I can recall.

Kingy had an unfortunate retirement which involved alcohol abuse. He ended up at one point living in a bedsit in Nether Edge getting very drunk and shouting about his ex wife. Very sad. Not sure what happened to him after that. Hope he sorted himself out.

Didn't he once knock himself out colliding with the post after scoring?

Funny you mention Jeff Young, I knew him professionally and socially, nice guy.

What you mention about King's on-field exploits doesn't surprise me. He could show delightful skill mixed in with thuggish intent. A sad end to his career, and I hope he's managed to rid his demons and find some type of contentment.

How often, and for how long, should we give him praise? He was the right man at the right time, but the undoubtable fact that many think his "style" of play is either welcome or effective this side of the Milennium, is an embarrassment that we could do without.

How about a bit of praise for Ian Porterfield who, unlike DD, left us two divisions higher than he found us?

Is there a statute of limitations required?

You responded to a post saying the poster could see why he had done well at the club. No request for a return for either him or his style of play. Like I alluded to, no possible reason, other than to labour a point you continually make, for any sort of opprobrium for the man and his tenure at the club.
For what it's worth, aside from his last few months in charge, I have nothing but respect for the job Porterfield did at the club either.
I prefer to save my ire for the likes of Blackwell rather than anyone who actually achieved things like promotion.

That's not a fact. It's fiction, conjured up inside your own head.

There's your problem right there.

Moore
EEL Wright O'Connell
Basham Coutts
Freeman Lafferty
Fleck
Sharp Done

I'd give Duffy a break, bring him on after 70 or so.

I also push Fleck further forward, can see/pick a pass and will contribute to defending high up the pitch.

Apparently Mowbray played Feck in a more attacking role at the end of last season and he did well, scored a couple.

i wouldn't mind fleck back in the side. See what he can do a it further forward in a side with more confidence.

Still think we are lacking pace in this side tho going forward. Wouldn't mind brooks or chapman getting a go, especially if laverty is apparently still not fit enough to play.

Professional football really isn't about 'giving people a go'. That's Sunday League mentality.

Givimago!

I think it will be one change - Ebanks-Landell for Wilson. I'd be very surprised if it was more than that.

Did Wilson get a knock or something on Sunday? Not too often you see a centre half replacing another if the starter hasn't been rubbish. I thought EEL did pretty well though.

I don't think he was particularly bad, but he gave it away quite frequently I felt so I can see him sticking with the back three that finished.

If Ebanks-Landell plays I hope he can start heading the ball convincingly, if he can he should be a good solid player for us. Hopefully the broken foot hasn't affected his jumping ability.
