Sorry it's a bit early. I'd go for same again, 3-5-2 but with Fleck sitting just behind Coutts, Lavery in for Done and Ebanks-Landell for Wilson. Sort of like a back 6 when we're defending, and a 6 behind Sharp when attacking.

Possibly a bit harsh to leave Basham out but I really think Fleck over the course of a few games has shown he's got something about him where as Basham not so much, although he was quite a bit better against Gillingham.

Freeman Basham Coutts Duffy Lafferty

Sharp Done

Subs: Long, Wilson, Hussey, Fleck, Chapman, Lavery, Clarke

It worked well today, I wouldn't change much. Fleck would be unlucky not to start but Coutts can't be dropped, and Duffy provides a creative attacking and wide option from midfield, he'll always get the ball in good attacking positions.

It would be tough dropping anyone from today tbh but agreed that it is hard to imagine Fleck staying on the bench with his quality. At the same time Basham does bring a lot of energy.
Wilson hasn't done a lot wrong for me. O'Connel looks decent when he moves upfield but defensively imo he has been responsible for us conceeding quite a few goals. Would probably bench him before Wilson.

I hereby move that Ebanks-Landell be referred to as "Banksy" from now on. Anything else is too much effort.

--------------------Moore
-------Banksy - Wright - O'Connel
Freeman--Basham-Fleck --Lafferty
---------------------Duffy
---------------Sharp-Clarke

Subs:
Long, Wilson, Hussey, Coutts, Scougall, Done, Lavery

Coutts misses out because I genuinely think Fleck and Duffy will offer more in terms of creativity & goals.
Bit of a toss up between Hussey and Chapman for a bench spot, but with Hussey we can maintain shape.

Liked for 'Banksy' - needs to happen :D

Blimey! Does this mean we have options, choices and competition for some of the places?

Sounds like we are becoming a football club with a squad, with a manager who is beginning to know his preferred system and wants to even rotate players and become a bit less predictable in how and who we will play..

If I'm not looking through rose tinted glasses after yesterday then that sounds like progress to me.

Keep injecting the passion, raise the confidence, gel together and be more decisive in the last 25 yards and this will work..

A good football Monday morning feeling for the first time in ages.

Thanks Chris.

If Lavery gets match fit then him in for Done,

The midfield did okay but still lacks a goal threat,

I agree, it may be tough on some players but thats football, tough managers make the tough calls, Fleck is one of our best playrs, we need more goals and more positive possession, which comes with playing well, I want to see Fleck in as soon as possible controlling midfield, some will say that midfield is too lightweight, not enough height but for me we can while playing 3 at the back, the team with the better footballers win more matches than they lose.

Wimbledon line up as follows

.............madam cholet

alderney ..shansi..stepney..obidos

..tomsk ..wellington..tobermory

.....uncle bulgaria..orinoco

................bungo

bench: hirado..idaho..nanking..cairngorm macwomble..omsk..culvain..cousin tokyo

Moore
Freeman - EEL - Wright - JO'C - Lafferty
Basham - Coutts - Fleck
Sharp - Done

Bring Duffy in off the bench for the worst performing midfield player about 70 mins in. See if he can get his confidence up against a tiring defence, I think that's what's holding him back at the moment.

This will be just as tough. They'll be dying to beat us.

I despair when I see people put a middle 3 of basham coutts and fleck

There are no goals there whatsoever. Personally if i knew we were going 352 then basham should be the right side centre back as it still gives him license to get forward. However I do like cut of the new man EBL so my team when everyone is available is

Moore
EBL Basham O'Connell
Freeman coutts fleck scougall Lafferty
Sharp Lavery

Whatever team he does pick, we seem to have plenty of options with Done Clarke Chapman game changers in their different ways. It's a very flexible squad now

Errrrm, they're our only 'central' midfielders. Scougall is an attacking midfield player no way suited to a 3 - too lightweight.
Going down there it's going to a be a horrible game, we're going to have to win the midfield battle, Basham and Fleck are battlers and in fairness to Coutts he has been lately too.

Like I said, bring Duffy on against the tiring defence after about 70 minutes if we haven't scored.

Same team. Thought bash had a good game yesterday won a lot of balls he looked 2nd favourite for. Coutts was a lot more energetic too, kept us ticking always showed for the ball best game he's had even got mud on his knee so from one of his biggest critics well played Paul. Duffy again always shows for the ball some decent link play and I think as the team gel his performances will only get better. Without getting too carried away we completely bossed midfield yesterday I didn’t think I'd be saying that about us this season, not least against a team who could have gone 2nd with a win yesterday.

Is it? Are they bringing Wise, Sanchez and Jones in (or any of the myriad others that went on to play for us as well)?
Perhaps they've "moved on".

NB: Don't know whether they have or haven't having never seen them play but I'm not convinced being called Wimbledon immediately means you can't play.

It's just a throwback ground, not a nice place to go. They play up an at em but not like the ugly bastards of yesteryear.

Key conundrums;
  1. Formation - stick with the 3-5-2, or revert back to more of a 4-4-2. We looked comfortable in the new set up v Gillingham but how much of the thinking for the change was due to CW's perception Gillingham would start the same?
  2. Centre backs - if we play a 4, then my first choice with everyone in form would be EEL and JOC, however given Wright's form and his inclusion coinciding with an uturn in overall form then can you drop him? If we play a 3, then EEL, JW and JOC. Wilson is the weaker of the 4, especially when it comes to carrying the ball out and distribution.
  3. Duffy - shows really nice glimpses of how effective he can be, but has been really frustrating for large parts - wasteful and hesitant. Do we persist and hope he improves with team form? If we decide to drop him, is Lavery fit enough to come in, or does Done drop back?
  4. Coutts plays better in a 3
  5. Chapman is back available
  6. Upfront - we 've scored 4 goals in 2 games, but should have been at least a couple more. Sharp and Done are arguably the most effective at the high pressing game, but are lacking in ruthlessness at present. Time for Leon to get back in, Lavery perhaps (again, if fit)?
All 6 'conundrums' are interlinked and there must be a 1001 permutations of what CW could go with. Im glad its him deciding and not me.

However, for what its worth I'd go;

- - - - - - - - - - - Moore - - - - - - - - - - -

Freeman - - EEL - - Wright - - Lafferty

- - - - - - - Basham - - Coutts - - - - - - -
- - - - - - - - - - - - Duffy - - - - - - - - - - -

- - - - Lavery - - - - - - - - - - Done - - - -

- - - - - - - - - - - Sharp - - - - - - - - - - -

For me we need to find a way to keep Duffy central. This formation would be flexible in that Duffy and Lavery can go out wide when necessary with Sharp and Done up top.

Who cares who scores if we win ?

Don't think he will but I would go for:

--------------------Moore
-------EEL - Wright - O'Connel
Freeman - Basham - Coutts - Fleck - Lafferty
---------------Sharp - Clarke

Subs:
Long, Wilson, Chapman, Duffy, Whiteman, Done, Lavery

UTB & FTP

So you think we are going to get 70 goals plus from our forwards? Scougall needs to play if we have a 3 IMO because he;s only one who can get forward and do something.
So wing backs and defenders cant chip in as well as the midfielders and strikers ? Don't forget our friend OG too :)

I think we've still got 70+ goals in the squad, despite the departures of players who guarantee goals when played.

Sharp - 20
Clarke - 10
Lavery - 10
Done - 7
Duffy - 5
Chapman - 3
Scougall/Coutts - 5
Fleck/Basham - 5
Ebanks Landell/Wilson/Hussey/Lafferty - 5
Freeman/O'Connell - 5

75 there without being too unrealistic. Enough to get you promoted if your defence is decent.

Currently reading "the crazy gang" by Bassett and Downes. Can totally see how Bassett was successful with a club like us. Seems like the perfect match . Sorry Pinchy ;)

My worry is we usually lose these as small newly promoted L2 teams are our bogey team. Just think Stevenage Crawley Fleetwood. Every time we go away for the 1st time we lose because as Fleetwood chairman wrote in the programme we were "biggest game in their history"

I hear what you are saying, really do. Just got the feeling after Oxford and particularly on Sunday that something has changed in this football club. Whilst it's entirely possible that we will yet again concede first and give ourselves an uphill struggle I just have a sneaky sense in my waters that we are going to batter AFC on Saturday, despite their upturn in form. If we play to our potential, they won't be able to live with us.
Here's hoping anyway.

We weren't a 'club like us' until Diplodocus arrived. We were much admired for our stylish, entertaining football under the late great John Harris, whose cardigan Bassett was not fit to button.

I haven't read the book and won't, I have seen the film, though. It's truly embarrassing to hear Bassett expound his anti-football philosophy and watch his team bring pub football to the Professional game.

You might rightly say "it worked" but not for long and, like all dinosaurs, he hadn't the ability to adapt. He's highly thought of at Plough Lane and BTDBL. He doesn't get a mention at the rest of his numerous clubs.

A true legend in his own postcode.

Oh, and Wally Downes. Wally fucking Downes!
