Makings of a promotion side

Freeman was brought down, should have been a penalty, but we didn't get it and that is football. We made them look ordinary at times. I honestly am starting to think (and believe) that this team, when it gels, it could turn out to be the best in years. Still some way to go, still made silly mistakes (if the defensive wall had jumped for Dack's free kick, it would have been headed out), but some good signs there; Billy's passion, Done's pressing, Freeman's run, O'Connell charging forward (like Harry Maguire) into the opposition half and box, Ebanks-Landell (looking like he could give Mike Tyson a run for his money), providing additional muscle in the back, etc.

Not the finished article, far from it, but we still have Lavary to make an appearance and the team to gel.

We deserved the win.

I don't agree with comments that Gillingham were poor. We closed them down, hassled them well and played some good football. We completely outplayed them today.

To go away from home and beat one of the better sides in this league is a fantastic result.

Of course all in vein if we don't keep producing but we should all be pleased

I even had text from my son after the game saying that he's starting to get excited again.

Keep this up and we'll be getting 30,000 in the 3rd division

If the team brings the passion and commitment, to match Chris Wilder's, and we end up getting into the play offs (or higher) then I can see 24, 000 to 26,000 for the final few games

Agree. The way we won was a bit fortunate but we deserved the three points. Yes, we made some mistakes, so did they, so does every team in this league.
Good performance with some decent passages of play; high energy and tempo made it hard for a good L1 side at home.

I didn't think Gillingham were poor, what was refreshing though was that we did our homework and market JET out the game & stifled their midfield. We dispelled all creativity and Coutts gradually came into the game. We lacked some basics, and it wasn't a perfect performance but we were professional and efficient in our approach and thoroughly deserved to win. That's something that we've lacked both home and away in the last couple of seasons, hopefully this is something that is consistent throughout our campaign.

I'm not from Sheffield, I've never lived in Sheffield but I "adopted" United though Sunday Soccer and Keith Macklin in the late 60's. Saw my first live game in 1971 and never looked back

Sorry, I meant to say either 1969 or 1970, think it was 1970 but could be wrong, my old Grandad took me, he was a massive Blade, literally until the day he died aged 91, when I went round, he was always asking about United (he could not go to games at that age), "papers say he played well, did he?", or "this bloke we have signed, any good?", he loved United.

By choice, by a deep seated hatred of LUFC and an equally deep seated love of Leeds RLFC, although the Blades are way in front of the Rhinos as my number one these days

I'm a bit concerned with how they went through us to get the free kick for the goal too. Thought it was a good foul by Lavery from our pov, shame he put it in and made us sweat out the game. The optimistic side of things is that after the goal we tightened up and kept the home team pretty quiet. It's another shake up of our defensive line, and overall they did pretty well. The expectation has to be that they'll improve as a unit over time.

Before the game most people seemed to be saying that a point would be a good result. They put in a great free kick from a defensive error, we put in a penalty from an even bigger defensive error. The game's then been decided on us being the better side and scoring a good goal from open play.

I get being tentative, but today is mostly a sign for the good.

Gillingham may have looked poor but any team can only play as well as the opposition lets em

In the second half when we started to impose ourselves Dack went missing. Never heard his name. When we went a goal down none of our players went missing. This is the difference. He maybe talented but he does not fit into the the Chris Wilder work ethic. Dack - it's a no from me.

There whole team was quiet, i put that down to us running the game not there character. I like the look of him personally. Theres others though, just mean a big signing like that in midfield.

Steady on Batman. Long way to go from here but the fact we can beat a top 10 team away is a real positive

56, every team in this league is poor and it has been since we fell down here. Our inability to finish in the top 2 or 3 teams of this league hasn't been based on their quality but our total shiteness.

I agree that we need to hold our fire but the gills are an average side for this league. an away win there is a decent result
 
Freeman's goal for me was a major sign of improvement from the last couple of seasons. How many times have balls been played across the six yard box and the wide players have not anticipated by making runs to the far post? Bryson used to fill his boots on those balls (yes opposite side). I also liked the way we still moved forward in the last 5 minutes No knee-jerk reactions of us being sudden promotion certainties but there are positives. Let's carry on the run down in Kingston on Saturday.
