The one year we properly went for it and spent cash in the Championship, we went up.
Agree.
1970/71 - We only signed John Barnwell (miss) and Billy Dearden (hit) before the start of the season. In January we sold John Tudor (I was upset at the sale) and signed John Hope (a hit for 1971 only) and David Ford (miss). We got promotion
1974/75 - We sold Geoff Salmons (one of our best players) but our incomings were players from 3rd division and this disappointed a lot of our fans but we finished 6th in the league
1975/76 - We broke our transfer record by signing Chris Guthrie (miss) but we finished bottom of the table
1978/79 - We sign Steve Finnieston, John Matthews, Peter Anderson, Alex Sabella and mid -season signed John MacPhail but sold Keith Edwards and later Simon Stainrod and Imre Varadi but we got relegation to the 3rd division
1980/81 - We sign Bob Hatton, Martin Peters, Mike Trusson, Steve Neville and later Don Givens. Sold Alex Sabella. Relegation to the 4th
1981-82 - Reg Brealey allowed Porterfield a very large budget to get us promotion
1982-83 - Again we spent heavily (Alan Young and Terry Curran the notable ones) but we finished mid table
In the rest of Porterfield years we carried on making expensive signings (Glenn Cockerill to Southampton was the most disappointing sale), got us promotion to the 2nd division in 1984 but in 1985 and 1986 we finished below our expectations
In 1988 Bassett admitted that we got relegation because he had made too many changes to the team too close to the end of the 1987-88 season. But his brilliant wheeling and dealing (a lot of our signings were players not many of us had heard of) got us two successive promotions and we had 4 seasons in the top flight (Deane's sale made it hard for us to stay up in 1994)
We have talked about the McDonald years which didnt see us get promotion despite record fees being paid and having a high wage bill
Yes, 2005-06 was a very good season for signing the right players but recruitment in January 2007 was very poor and we got relegation
In 2007 Robson spunked the Tevez cash and it went downhill apart from nearly getting promotion via the play offs in 2009
History tells us that making expensive signings didnt always bring us success, it is about getting the right formula
