senseless abuse of George Long

But what happened to abusing the opposition players/fans?

I can't remember the last time a visiting team got some grief from our lot.

Agreed.

It's bizarre at the minute - we used to dish out the dogs abuse to opposition players, officials and give out plenty of stick to opposition supporters. Now we're abusing our own players and fellow fans. I preferred the former.

Deja-vu from the Gillingham game last season, in both the error and the reaction. He didn't appear to go to pieces in quite the same way following the reaction at the weekend mind, though the damage was already done and he was largely untested the rest of the game. I hope the reliable and healthy experienced keeper is on his way soon...

I hope Ramsdale has a thick skin, because needless to say if he makes a few errors when given the chance he's unlikely to find a patient supportive crowd behind him. Twas forever thus – the Quinn abuse is mentioned above, but I'll never forget the poisonous reaction at the end of 2004/05 when youngsters Forte and (debutant?) Sharp both missed a sitter in front of the Kop.
I think you will find Ramsdale has a thick skin!! However when the new keeper comes in you'll never know cus it'll be u23 or on loan and that will do fine.

Was fuming with his error and constant flapping at crosses on Saturday but he did make a great save to keep it 0-0 early on. That's the problem with goalies, they can make save after save but it's the f**k ups that people tend to remember and George seems to have at least one howler per match now.

Part of me feels sorry for him. It's the loneliest position on the pitch and having abuse hurled at you from blokes sat 10 yards away must make it even worse. Even the strongest of minds would be effected by that eventually, it's completely counter productive . BUT as much a I feel for the lad it's as clear as day that he isn't good enough and he is holding us back.

If Southend get their shots away tomorrow and he is in goal, we WILL concede and then the abuse will get even worse.

Get it sorted please CW

If a tree falls in the forest and a season ticket holder who wasn't at the game is the only one to see it, does it make a noise?

My bad ST. I must learn to read thoroughly instead of just skimming.
Now, back to your point. Does who make a noise? The supporter or the tree?

I read a story once about a kid who played for Barry Fry who has a dodgy hair cut - He moaned to Fry fans were giving him the bird about it, Fry said you can start scoring goals and they won't - or get your hair cut.

So the anology here is Long becomes a goalkeeper and the fans get off his back.

Or Wilder replaces him

I'll be dining out on this for months :)

George gets better every season, but I have to admit the pace of improvement is glacial.

By the time he's 65 he'll be devastating

I want the kid to do well, I really do, and the ironic cheers Satdi were embarrassing, but George mate - we needed you 2 seasons ago and it's still not happening fast enough mate.

Isnt George the player everyone was clamouring for to be in the side a season or two back. Quite emphatically if I remember. Different tune now . Just glad its the manager picking the team , otherwise we would have no club at all.

He was yes. Because Howard wasn't up to scratch and got some stick. The problem seems to be that some think while the incumbent is playing poorly, soneobe with less ability is the answer, because it's easy to shout about. Freeman for Brayford at the moment for example.

Those pushing for long two years ago are probably the most vociferous about him not being good enough now.

He isn't good enough btw. Nowhere near.

I've never clamoured for George to be in the team. I desperately want him to be brilliant and I still think he can be (great save at Bolton for example) but I always look at opposition keepers and think "I'd swap you for ours" - and I never thought that with Hodgy, Hope, Tracey, Kelly, even Kenny. We're known for having good keepers and we need one now. I hope George saves a penalty for England in the World Cup in Qatar, but right now we need a proper stopper against Southend.

How the hell is this still rumbling on?

Surely the problem that needs addressing here is that George is simply not good enough to play at this level. He has had more than enough chances to show his quality and has been unreliable, error prone and a downright liability for years.

Fans choosing to jeer George do not make him a bad player and they are not responsible for the shitty position of this club. The whole stadium could universally applaud his every action but he would still drop clangers and freighten the shit out of the back four on a constant basis.

He needs dropping from the squad and we need a replacement keeper.

People sitting on their pedestals offering patronising self rioutois opinions to other Blades and having the audacity to say that they are "not proper Blades" is, to be frank, a load of horse shit that annoys me far more than the booing.
:tumbleweed:

Some very sensitive souls about.

It's football, not figure skating or dressage.

Seriously, what would you expect? What would the alternative have been? - dour silence (yet more of it)? Adkins-like fake positivity?

Agree it's unpleasant, but it really is just part & parcel IMO. It's a reality that has to be dealt with by players and manager, rather than wished away.
I'm definitely not a sensitive soul just don't see how it helps anyone as the abuse started from the second minute of the first home game of the season. I suppose people have different ways of supporting the club, for me personally that's not how to do it.

Do any of those who think Long is a good keeper and should retain his shirt,(I think we can all agree abusing him during the 90 is way out of order) genuinely think he would get near the shirt for ANY of the other clubs in our league with aspirations for promotion akin to ours?
I would suggest anyone answering yes is either telling porkies or knows fuck all about what a goalkeepers job actually is.

Unless we sign a new keeper it has to be George as good as Ramsdale is he isn't ready. I do think we need a new keeper but at the minute he's all we have.

Let ramsdale develop and play for u23's and england. Then when the time is right play him. In the mean time keep george or let a new sad sack take the flack

I think what folk are getting at is it`s been obvious for quite some time his shortcomings have been ignored by manager after manager. Like the CB position since Harry left.
Unfortunately for Long, his mistakes cost points every time whereas shyte outfield players often get away with equivelant error strewn games.
Sadly,it comes with the lot that is a keepers which is why any manager with a brain invests the absolute most he can for the best possible occupant of his sides most vital position.

If you see it / hear it and say nothing, do nothing... you're just as bad as the abuser(s).

It's that easy.
I did think about saying something but I thought I'd be wasting my time trying to reason with morons and had a good idea what the outcome would be,now if the young pup wasn't in tow.....

So not being up for your job is fine.
I see. Thanks. That`ll ensure 19k every week smile happily as we enjoy battling relegation.

I do feel for GL if he plays again tomorrow night. He's simply not good enough and to amplify that, he is in terrible form. He will be petrified tomorrow night and it wouldn't surprise me if the knuckle draggers boo him when the team is read out and when he approaches the net.

If George plays and we win the toss I wouldn't be amazed if we kick towards the kop in the first half by our choosing.

Expecting young men to perform to the best of their capabilities while under ridiculous abuse from their own fans is simply not going to happen.

Whether George is good enough or not, this is one of those occasions where it is (some of) the fans fault.
It is CW that needs to sort it and not George Long.

It is absolutely NOT the fans fault Long is manifestly not good enough.
It`s his,the coaches and the managements fault. He needs replacing permenantly and yesterday.
Any other suggestion is lunacy.

We are in agreement on all that you stated except the fans bit. We all know he's nge. It is up to CW to sort it. It is not George's fault he's not up to standard - he gets picked - he has to play.

It is the fans fault for booing and jeering. It's not helping GL or the rest of the team who will think.... 'shit, don't pass to me, I don't want that dogs abuse aimed at me!'

It's counter productive and simply uncalled for.

Save your discontent for half time and full time, but hey, haters are gonna hate and all that.

I do wonder about the calibre of goalkeeping coaches we have .

Hope Long plays , has a boat load of luck and bows out gracefully . Think it's gone past the point of no return .

Still way off the mark in a number of key positions , which creates frustration amongst the fans , as you can predict situations happening before they actually do .

Time and again we beat ourselves before a ball is kicked.

Fans fault - not really .
