senseless abuse of George Long

Depends if there is a character limit on the forum. Go on the YouTube channel and pick any highlights videos, they'll be one on most of them.

Every keeper has those. Of course there is gillingham but I am sure you can go on you tube and give us the rest. Not my argument to prove

Sorry if it's bean mentioned elsewhere in fact no scrap that it deserves it's own thread. While I agree he dropped a major clanger Saturday which cost us 2 points, I just don't get why anyone would give him the amount of abuse he received from his own fans sat behind the goal. It actually started from about the second minute when I think it was Wilson headed away from the edge of the box "That wer tha's George" how he was supposed to get to it I don't know. That sort of stuff along with "tha rubbish George" all of which he can hear obviously knocks his confidence, then he made the mistake of flapping at one "fucking wage stealing bastard" amongst others rang out. Then the save I shouted "reyt save George" the only positive comment he received all half. Then the clanger well "your a discrace to this club George" and many more, but it was at half time when he ran back to pick his bottle of water up out of his net the vile abuse with grown men slavering words out spitting with rage that was a discrace. Yes George I agree I wish they would "fuck off" too. I'll finish off with this I took the 9 year old DLFT jnr for a half time slash we get in he says " Dad why were they abusing our own keeper like that" I replied "No idea son I don't see the point in coming or choosing to sit where they do just to hurl abuse at Long" The reply from a 9 year old " There not blades them are they Dad" no son they are fukin not.
I feel really sorry for your son in all this.
Not nice for Long either. All in all it's terrible conduct.

I'm no fan of booing during games. You only have to talk to ex-players to realise how much it means to them to have fans supporting them during the 90 minutes. And with them being ex-Blades, I'm sure they didn't always deserve it.

I don't mind so much at the final whistle but I'm sure Long knows he made a mistake and CW knows he made a mistake so I don't think the sarcastic jeers were adding any new information into the pile.

i think that's the problem, confidence is too fragile. When he used to be the in and j watched him at half time he seems to have all the confidence in the world, however put him between the sticks and the area becomes smaller and he hesitates that split second too long, like getting up after the mistake on Saturday.

Unfortunately because he's one of our own he's unlikely to gain much favour with his own fans for some reason and it's been the same since he made his debut.

as far as I know georgeebhasnt complained about it, just decent people who don't any to listen to it.

Think I would have booed a few others before long for lack of effort but I choose to mumble on my mates

Confidence is a major factor with him. Unfortunately, as things have panned out for us over the last few seasons, patience is very very thin amongst the fan base and unlike if we were half decent in the championship, the fans are becoming less forgiving.

I agree - he wasn't any worse than a fair few players Saturday. It seems to be highlighted more because it was his mistake that ultimately made our job harder. As I mention. Goalkeepers will always be in the spotlight and their mistakes are always magnified.

Ahhh you see, I think it was the other way around and that the fans have (until now more so) shown a bit more patience. Especially last season because we didn't want Mark Howard back in the net.
I personally don't think he would have lates as long as he has done if he wasn't an academy product.

Some very sensitive souls about.

It's football, not figure skating or dressage.

Seriously, what would you expect? What would the alternative have been? - dour silence (yet more of it)? Adkins-like fake positivity?

Agree it's unpleasant, but it really is just part & parcel IMO. It's a reality that has to be dealt with by players and manager, rather than wished away.

It was the first game of the season though, tempers shouldn't be that high for the first game of the season.

We know it was a bad mistake, I just think some of the really personal comments being shouted at him around me (front of the Kop, right behind the goal) really crossed the line for a lad who obviously didn't mean to make the error.

But other than making themselves feel better, what exactly are they achieving?

I'm glad earning a lot of money makes it okay for people to walk past you shouting "fuck off you useless cunt."
It's interesting how many posts include comments about how much players are on. That's life. People who are good at things tend to earn more than those that aren't.
And if he was on minimum wage he'd still get exactly the same amount of abuse as he does now.

Jeez Louise.
Have some of you just started going since football became a middle class pastime?
Clearly no-one went in the 70`s 80`s or 90`s when abusing anything that moved was part of the match day experience.

Bringing things up to date, unfortunately Blades fans have suffered a largely ceasless diet of utter fucking crap for nearly a decade, and whilst it might be nice if everyone was able to accept that everytime they go to watch the team that plays for the club their hearts beat for that was likely to be the case, and would be met with sage and wise understanding, unfortunately that ain`t so.

I am sorry Long got/gets abuse during games, but unfortunately he is probably now just viewed by most as just another sub standard wage thieving parasite keeping the club down in the basement.

Blades fans are no different than any others in this respect, although I`d argue that 19k after what`s been on offer seemingly since God was a boy actually suggests they`re rather special.

Yeah it was much better then and a bonus brick in the face on the way out too.

TB was common 60 year ago. Would you like that back too?

I rather think you`ve gone a long way past the gist of my point, but that`s your perogative.

As you`ve raised the issue,I yearn for standing on the kop,the smell of cigars,(I`m a non smoker),the exhileration and madness of goal celebrations and the lack of OTTElf and Fucking Safety crap everywhere along with morbidly obese males and females squeezed into high viz tops telling everyone to sit down/move this way or that, and countless other totally ridiculous orders attempting to justify their minimum wage thick as two short planks prescence.

There`s loads more but that`ll do for the mo.

But what happened to abusing the opposition players/fans?

I can't remember the last time a visiting team got some grief from our lot.

We're on a bit of a knife-edge, aren't we? Years of dispiriting failure, new hope at the start of the season - then it all falls terribly flat, in front of 19,000 expectant souls.

You're spot on - he didn't mean to make the error. But, regarding the hefty number who abused him (because it wasn't just a crankish minority), I bet the last thing they had in mind on the way to the Lane on Saturday was abusing George Long. It was all set up for a handsome victory to start off the new Chris Wilder era in style. But...

Similar to you, I don't like it. But it happens.

Time very much for George to be replaced, I'd say. Otherwise he'll be relying on turning in superhuman performances (that he's just not capable of) to win round a crowd that's turned on him.

Wasn't at the game so can't comment on the mistake in question, but how many games has Long played with two non-shit centre backs in front of him? Can't be too many.

There`s another thing I miss.
The ritual I smell the smell....
You`re gonna get your fuckin` eads kicked in.....
In their Liverpool slums........

and countless other essential mixes.

The gist of your post was that abuse was common 50 years ago.

It didn't make it right then and it didn't make our players perform better in the 70's either.

I'm not some dainty PC knob, I just don't see why anyone would abuse one of their own players who is trying.

But what happened to abusing the opposition players/fans?

Now as Linz says, I'm all for vitriolic abuse of the opposing team.
