Sorry if it's bean mentioned elsewhere in fact no scrap that it deserves it's own thread. While I agree he dropped a major clanger Saturday which cost us 2 points, I just don't get why anyone would give him the amount of abuse he received from his own fans sat behind the goal. It actually started from about the second minute when I think it was Wilson headed away from the edge of the box "That wer tha's George" how he was supposed to get to it I don't know. That sort of stuff along with "tha rubbish George" all of which he can hear obviously knocks his confidence, then he made the mistake of flapping at one "fucking wage stealing bastard" amongst others rang out. Then the save I shouted "reyt save George" the only positive comment he received all half. Then the clanger well "your a discrace to this club George" and many more, but it was at half time when he ran back to pick his bottle of water up out of his net the vile abuse with grown men slavering words out spitting with rage that was a discrace. Yes George I agree I wish they would "fuck off" too. I'll finish off with this I took the 9 year old DLFT jnr for a half time slash we get in he says " Dad why were they abusing our own keeper like that" I replied "No idea son I don't see the point in coming or choosing to sit where they do just to hurl abuse at Long" The reply from a 9 year old " There not blades them are they Dad" no son they are fukin not.

Agreed.

It is NEVER going to make him play better. He is there on the pitch and a Blade doing his best. If it's not good enough then it's CW's job to sort it out, but booing him achieves precisely nothing.

After over 100 games I'm really not sure that he will develop any further. The howlers on Saturday took me back to the Exeter draw at BDTBL a few years back and he barely seems to have progressed. Still no reason to jeer him though.

DLFT,

I agree we shouldn't be jerring our own player but it's not as simple as that.

You should have explained to your son that our players are on massive (relatively speaking) wages.
Explain to him that SUFC have spent most of their history in the top flight (Premier League)
So being in the 3rd tier is embarrassing for our club and many fans.

Explain to him that Long has made howlers in the past and many have predicted he'll do it again and again.

Explain that football players are paid massive wages, hardly do any real work, plenty of free time and are put on a pedestal. It's a really privilege position.

However they is a down side..... there's pressure to perform otherwise most players get stick.
If a player can't handle the heat then they need to get out of the kitchen.
Everyone makes mistakes and it's a test of character how they bounce back.

Shame on them I would encourage a club representative to sit there tuesday night just to listen to it, then fuck the abuses off to the back corner somewhere where he doesn't have to listen to it. He isn't the best keeper in the world but he was genuinely gutter after the howler I could see it. The abuse he received on Saturday was totally over the top and yes George I too wish they'd Fuck off.

There's a fair few on the Kop who've booed various players for years. I remember Quinny remonstrating with them. For me the loud sarcastic cheer was out of order and the idiots who did it are pathetic.

The point is though he struggles and makes mistakes. His back four clearly are wary which is bound to upset the balance. We aren't going anywhere with him in the side and Wilder obviously sees that.

Amazing isn't it. robbiez666 is moaning about an imaginary youth pathway, but when we do bring these young players through, they will probably get abused for making mistakes too

And we wonder why we don't get decent youngsters on loan from the big Prem clubs. Who in their right mind would send a youngster here for development? I'm amazed the lad from Middlesbrough came.

I had to have a chat with some guy on the South Stand on Saturday for going over the top. Not sure how it's meant to help.

One guy last season was actually willing George to make a mistake. George came out and headed a ball away and this guy shouted, quick get it past him!

It's counterproductive to vocally criticise the goalkeeper whether deserved or not.

I'm all in favour of it when it's outfield players. The scum we had last season got off lightly.

Goalkeepers have to be allowed to slip away quietly and hope that's the case with Long. I defended him throughout last season but enough is enough.

George (or his agent) clearly negotiated a good deal in the close season. I don't blame either of them, the management is to blame. I don't boo or jeer him but I do think he is a total lightweight. Hopefully he will disappear into the Conference sometime very soon.

More than enough evidence here to suggest a section of Blades fans are, as has been previosly stated, no where near as good as fans as they would like to think they are !!

It's a problem that just won't go away and plays a part (and only that) in the negativity that engulfes the stadium on match days.

Carry on booing:(

How the hell is this still rumbling on?

Surely the problem that needs addressing here is that George is simply not good enough to play at this level. He has had more than enough chances to show his quality and has been unreliable, error prone and a downright liability for years.

Fans choosing to jeer George do not make him a bad player and they are not responsible for the shitty position of this club. The whole stadium could universally applaud his every action but he would still drop clangers and freighten the shit out of the back four on a constant basis.

He needs dropping from the squad and we need a replacement keeper.

People sitting on their pedestals offering patronising self rioutois opinions to other Blades and having the audacity to say that they are "not proper Blades" is, to be frank, a load of horse shit that annoys me far more than the booing.

A huge chorus of various abuse does nothing to help the situation. By all means moan and criticise players; I do it every game. The difference is when a large number of people do it at the top of their voice with the intention of being heard by the player in question. That's where it gets ridiculous.

I've defended Long for ages and I simply can't do it anymore. We need a new keeper and that's that. But in the meantime, hurling sarcasm and personal abuse at the lad isn't going to make him a better keeper.

Has anyone used the term "not proper Blades" on this thread? I may have missed it but I don't think they have.

It's embarrassing. I think the people going red in the face hurling abuse and insults at him actually do it to make them selves feel better about themselves. It's a joke, people waking past on the way to the toilet or for a pint are bellowing stuff at him.

It was the first game of the fucking season.

George Long, like any professional goalkeeper, should be tough enough to take stick from the punters, it's part of the job. However, George Long, like any professional goalkeeper, should be able to catch a fucking ball.

And you like any person should be able to encourage when someone is down like any other human being. He had a bad day and you're obviously a.....

Would he be getting the same protection if he wasn't "one of our own" from the academy? He is a poor keeper in general that can make the odd decent save (as expected!) and in all fairness he won't play most of his career above this level.

Simmonsen springs to mind as one who wasn't "one of our own" and suffered (rightly!) some stick - albeit he was ten times worse.

Goalkeepers need broader shoulders than most because their errors are usually critical and do cost us a lot more than say a midfielder making an error.
Whilst unjustifiable slagging and willing of errors isn't on, you've also got to understand heat of the moment, passion related outbursts when a keeper makes a complete fuck up of such a routine save that nearly cost us 3 points. There is only so much "encouragement" you can shout in that moment when it is the N'th cock up you've seen the goalkeeper make over the past two seasons.
Sure he has feelings but Jesus, so do the fans. Give me the opportunities he has been afforded and I wouldn't care if I was told to fuck off and worse by a few hundred fans behind my net or sarcastically cheered for making a routine catch that I didn't drop.

All being said, I can never understand people that boo the team. Seems to quite vocal from the Kop at the slightest little thing these days.

And while we are at it, the booing (start of the season for christs sake!) is up there with the whole embarrassing show when half the ground emptied against Crewe on Tuesday night at the end of 90 minutes.

Reckon Wilder'll be facing a bit of "senseless abuse" if he doesn't get that Lee Grant signing over the line soon.

Always said a good goalkeeper can save you 12 points . For Long , club and supporters , time to move on .

After over 50 years going to the lane , still no idea what a proper Blade is . Is supporting them ( and players ) through thick and thin. Think so.

Deja-vu from the Gillingham game last season, in both the error and the reaction. He didn't appear to go to pieces in quite the same way following the reaction at the weekend mind, though the damage was already done and he was largely untested the rest of the game. I hope the reliable and healthy experienced keeper is on his way soon...

I hope Ramsdale has a thick skin, because needless to say if he makes a few errors when given the chance he's unlikely to find a patient supportive crowd behind him. Twas forever thus – the Quinn abuse is mentioned above, but I'll never forget the poisonous reaction at the end of 2004/05 when youngsters Forte and (debutant?) Sharp both missed a sitter in front of the Kop.

i think that's the problem, confidence is too fragile. When he used to be the in and j watched him at half time he seems to have all the confidence in the world, however put him between the sticks and the area becomes smaller and he hesitates that split second too long, like getting up after the mistake on Saturday.

Unfortunately because he's one of our own he's unlikely to gain much favour with his own fans for some reason and it's been the same since he made his debut.

as far as I know georgeebhasnt complained about it, just decent people who don't any to listen to it.

Think I would have booed a few others before long for lack of effort but I choose to mumble on my mates
