If you narrow the pitch and have ordinary 3rd division defenders who arn't allowed to use a 'footballing' goalkeeper as an option are you asking for trouble? In my opinion this is the main reason we look so bad,the defenders are obviously instructed to put it in row 'Z' or launch it rather than play it out from the keeper,it looks bloody awful !

Depends on how you approach the thread...

Sounds more and more like the side lacked confidence yesterday, from what i've read, they were afraid to pass forward, with confidence, taking the easier option to shift the ball instead of look for the forward runs.

Out of interest, was there anyone getting on the ball and looking to try something different - speed up play, change direction, making attacking runs, overlapping, taking confident shots from distance?

We need someone with confidence to come in and boss the game - a Tonge or a Brown type.

Narrowing the pitch, is an attempt to reduce the space and press opposition teams. Great if you are the side bossing the game, but can work against you too.

I'm surprised that Wilder did this straight away to be fair

No. And we really were shit.

Fleck looks like the player who will pull the strings once the players settle into the new system. He looks so comfortable on the ball and seems to find space to work. He was good first half but then dissapeared.

For the first half an hour we were playing it on the floor and passing forward but then seemed to run out of ideas. The plan second half seemed to be to hoof it into the channels for Billy to chase or target Leon for the flick on. It wasn't pretty but in the end we scrapped out a point.

We go again.

As Stretch said, Fleck did a bit in the first half to be fair. And he was calling for the ball at throw ins instead of disappearing like some. Didn't notice him as much second half.

He looked knackered with 25mins to go and was as bad as anyone for passing backwards.

Not a lot of positives to take from it but thought he was one of the slightly better ones for a while, few great touches and runs first half, but yes I agree with you.

It may work if we were playing the 4-2-3-1 of pre-season but backfires if we're playing 4-4-2

First half he looked good. Second half he spent half his time watching the ball fly over his head.

I'm also surprised we narrowed the pitch and disagree with the decision. It's more likely to work against us. We see a lot of teams come here, work hard and stop us playing. Pressing isn't our strength, we don't have ideal players for it. We need all the space we can get, especially when we're playing with attacking full backs and at least one proper winger. We do have more quality than most teams in the division, we should be backing ourselves to win far more than we lose at home in any open game at this level, so having a big pitch shouldn't be a worry. It won't always work in our favour but it's a percentage game.

You called out Adkins early on. Having seen the first home match yesterday, how do you see Wilder panning out?
Hard to say really with about 4 key players still to arrive. If they're up to it having seen them in a few games I think we'll go up automatically. If they're not though, roughly 5th - 8th. A lot is riding on these players for me. If it's Lavery, Morsy and Grant (I'd want another CB too) - I'd be happy and confident that they'll turn out to be good signings, and that we'll go up. But that's enough tempting fate for now.

Agreed. On the basis of what has been delivered so far, you happy with the bosses tactics? I'm a bit disappointed with yesterday, but believe it will pull together sooner rather than later, especially if we strengthen the side.

If I thought for one moment that he was building a Hoof and Hope team, I would be first in the car park. I think we're at the stage where players who are nether the brightest nor the best are struggling to come to terms with the manager's philosophy.

That philosophy, I hope and believe, is not ugly, discredited Hoof but rather the exciting quick pass and move that we saw from Northampton last season.

Contrary to certain views on here, Hoof is horrible and ineffective; certainly not "fine" or "okay" as was misguidedly suggested earlier. How people think that heading practice for opposition defenders or through hoofs to nobody but the keeper, can possibly either succeed or excite, is beyond me...

There's nothing wrong with going sideways and backwards when you don't have a good option forwards. Nobody very blames the forwards for not showing for the ball and making an option for the player in possession.
