He's been looking like the former Sheffield United player Billy Sharp thus far this season. I wonder if, like his periods under Warnock and Blackwell, the style of football really doesn't suit him. He may just have started slowly, but losing his goals would be a big issue.

Wilder made Billy captain , we know why and forget best man for the job shite .

I hope he can hit some form. He,s our fucking captain. Would be very uncomfortable for both Billy and CW if he can't....

Its a question i asked when Wilder came in and I think it was on one of the threads about Che Adams that i made my point.

Wilder was always going to buy a big Striker, Clarke being ideal for this division. But is Sharp able to play alongside Clarke as the Second Striker, the Agana to the Deane. For me this role would need a fair bit of pace and an anticipation. I think the role alongside Clarke is better suited, ironically to Che Adams... or possibly Done. Sharp just doesn't have enough pace for me.

However, Sharp is not a target man either, yet from playing alone up top most of last season, he bagged 20+ goals. Not bad for a slow non target man...

Its 2 games into a 46 game league season plus cup games. Its going to take time for Sharp and Clarke to work and they need that time, two of the best strikers in this league, grafters and able to more than hold their own physically.

So what about pace? I think the lack of pace up front isn't the essential component, but it'll require creativity and attacking movement from the midfield behind them, what Clarke and Sharp will need is decent balls into them, they will get 40 goals between them at least, including penalties

Shall we wait and see while we've got a bit more of a sample size than 2 games?
Did you post that with a straight face?

Last night you were liking posts that were writing off the new players.

I'd like to see to see these posts writing off the new players if you can show them to me?
In the Deadwood thread, post by Deano.

I posted at the time, that the sample size was 2 games. This can't seriously be lost on you?

And many called you a pig

Played two, had one disallowed for offside, set up a clear cut chance that Clarke missed.

Yep, it's time Sharp hung up his boots.

That doesn't affect me being the voice of reason...
You don't half talk shit.

It's not a long post, and it ends in statement that we "needed to spend more better on quality players" but that McCabe hadn't done that. It's crystal clear what was meant.

It's a conclusion that has written off the players after 2 games that you predictably liked, only to criticise the same thing here.

It's no surprise you're confused when you think that post writes off the new players.

It does no such thing.

I like Billy, but for me he isn't big enough or mobile enough to lead the line and hold the ball..often gets outmuscled ..he also hasn't got the pace to beat his man or get behind. He has to rely on getting goals by working space by his link up play or getting across a stationery defender,or maybe a shot on the turn in front of the defender...credit to him for getting 20 goals last season with shocking service, especially from wide areas.
I tend to think we would be better with someone with a bit more pace alongside Clarke like he had with Callum Wilson at Coventry.

I think Sharp was poor in quite a few games last season. I know he scored a lot of goals in the end and that means he's done his job. But at one point in the season he was dropped because frankly, he was just not having any impact. I think he's an instinctive finisher and that's valuable to have in the team, but really, he shouldn't escape criticism when he's not making much of a contribution to the team. I would have taken him off at Bolton last saturday - he was pretty anonymous. When he came off the other night v Crewe I think McNulty looked far more mobile and threatening and he has to be pushing Billy for a starting place imo. It won't happen yet. I think Wilder will want to give Billy a good 8 or 10 games as first choice striker - and that's fair enough. But I can see the board coming up more and more often with number 10 on it, over the coming weeks.

Someone like McNulty perhaps? Or the new guy that's coming in this week from a local club?

The important thing is that If Sharpe isn't scoring or creating assists he must be dropped, the same as any other under-performing player, regardless of whether he's captain or not. Now isn't the time to drop him, but if he hasn't found form in another couple of games ......... Tufty needs to be brutal to give us any chance of doing well in this Division.

This is a mistake (in my opinion) which we made with Sharp previously and also with Ched when we were in the Championship. If players like Sharp aren't scoring, then the first reaction is to drop him and bring in another player, like McNulty. An under performing striker shouldn't necessarily be dropped, but if the striker is being played in the wrong position or asked to do a job which he isn't up to (like Ched was when he played almost as a lone striker) then its a different scenario and i agree, others should get a chance.

Out of form or confidence strikers (which i think Billy is, he certainly was when he was younger) need careful handling, taking them off after 70-80 mins never helps, they have to start and finish games and hope that they get that one chance to change fortunes. Not that Sharp is in that situation at the moment btw
