Steve Paterson played 6 games for Man U and I remember Shoot! columnist Gordon Hill talked highly of him in one of his articles. Harry Haslam signed him on a free (Paterson had injury problems at Man U) in summer 1980 but he never played a first team match for us and went on to play for Scottish non league clubs. He managed Inverness and Aberdeen

We were going to sign him from Palace in summer 1976. He even was in our squad photo but his contract was cancelled after a failed medical but Orient signed him soon after

A couple of days later,after failing his medical, Tony Pritchett asked him if he was disappointed,Whittle replied,as he patted his pocket, "Well,it does have its compensations"...
