Vinnie? Never convinced me. Met him as well. Didn't have the aura I anticipated. I reckon a few of Bassett's other players would have got the better of him, if it came to it.
Hard players go for the ball with danger rather than the man!

If you could ask owd Trevor r.I.p OCS he would tell you big bad billy .

Defo what he said !!

Unfortunately Vinnie was a much, much better (& harder) player for the L**ds scum than he was for us. For whatever reason.....?
He was reckless with us but not hard & intimidating, think the opposition took it as a challenge to see how fast he could be sent off.

Billy W is king here look no further, the stories are numerous & legendary.
Bradders wer' a tough lad- more so than VJ IMO.
Charlie Hartfield was a boxer before a footballer - as one unfortunate player from Udinese found out, ha! What a night......
I know it was only brief but don't forget Chris Kamara - ignore the afro & bafoon antics - CK was solid on' pitch.
Booker backed down from nobody - but there again "he's a dirty fcker"

Santos gets remembered for one incident - but was he really a tough nut?? I honestly dot remember,

I always thought Gillespie could handle himself for a winger!! I remember one incident with (c)Hunt - where he looked like he was gonna propa 'ave him!

Whitehurst - head and shoulders above all others. Not just on the pitch, but the off pitch incidents as well.

Who was it who chucked a ball in someones face in the tunnel before a game? I seem to remember reading that somewhere, teams lined up in the tunnel (could have been QPR?), there was some eyeballing going on and stare downs, etc., So a Blade grabbed the ball and threw it full pelt into a players face, there was some pushing and shoving and the whole Blades line up got involved, ref and officials calm it down, but the game was won at that point, Blades just bossed them all over the pitch.

Also, in recent times, Michael Doyle, never the biggest lad on the pitch, not even close, but the first one to go in with a heavy "retaliation" tackle if any opposition player was throwing his weight around.

Eddie Colquhoun, was no shrinking violet, apparently he gave Joe Jordan his lovely smile. And Eusebio walked off the pitch after a tackle from Eddie when he was on international duty..

Patrick Suffo.... That headbut was one of the best I've ever seen.

martin khul they reckon was hard pike the psyche curtis woodhouse and didnt the centre half we signed from preston get a cut throat knife on someone prem season carnt remember is name BLADES TRIVIA my arse

D'Jaffo AKA Metal Mickey could definitely do a bit. I remember him steaming out of the tunnel to get at an opposite member of staff. Reckon he had the edge on Santos.

my hero from 1980 the old british rail fraud himself john mcphail it all kicked off against pigs on that day according to kenworthy

Ludovic Pollet, Wolves centre back. D'Jaffo was dressed in his suit when he went to confront him on the pitch after the match

Billy Whitehurst. As told by Martin Keown.

Has anybody read the comments under the article linked by Shoreham? "Keane would have flattened Whitehurst" being a personal highlight

We used to sing a song about Ken Mallender being "....dirtier than Rattin" Not sure if that made him hard though ?

Agree with quid a few of these Billy W of course , dear old Trevor H , Eddie C , Paul Stancliffe could hold his own , but can't believe no one has mentioned the great solid legs of Kieth Eddy !

Big Billy without a shadow of a doubt , Gayle , Bradders , Eddie colquhoun , Hartfield , Hodges , all liked to play it real .
Vinny Jones may have played to the gallery more than owt else , I remember we'd just signed him and we were at Southampton , when he got creamed by Horlock , he bottled it after that , and did nowt for rest of game ,
he was alright bullying people but not , when they put it up to him , ok going in against the like of Reid and gazza
but the first five would have left him drinking his blood if he'd grabbed them by the balls .

willie carlin , broke alan balls leg on a whim
Hockey , given the part ,would have made the motel owner more believable in Psycho

Paul Devlin.

Marcus Bent once made the mistake of squaring up to him in the changing room. A few seconds later, Bent was on the floor having suffered a forehead-related nose injury.

I seem to remember a game at the Lane against Palars when they were all kicking lumps out of Vinnie.

Eric Young, Andy Thorn and Jeff Thomas took it in turns to kick him, trying to goad him into a yellow then red. He just took it all including some really nasty challenges and he never rolled round on the floor or complained to the ref.

True he was a dickhead, but he could take it as well as dishing it out.

I remember Sunderland away at Roker (1992?) when one of their fans chcuked a pie at him. He picked it up, made out like he was going to eat it then gave the big 'come on then' to their entire terrace. It had just about calmed down by the time Hodgy exercised his elbow on one of their player's heads.

I was so glad that day that my car had a Leeds dealer's on the plates as we queued waiting to get over that bloody bridge.

Surprised nobody's mentioned Mike Trusson. When we played Altrincham (I think)The Stir made a big deal about them having a street fighter on the team (causing trouble). Trusson head butted him and got sent off and we lost 3-0.

This was my impression of Jones. I remember seeing him really put the frighteners on United when he played for Leeds on Boxing Day 1989, and thought he'd be a great signing, but there was nothing like that when he signed for us: there was a lot of clapping, some late tackles, a lot of standing around in midfield, and a decent long throw. And that was it. All mouth and no trousers.

It's a while since I've checked this but I seem to recall that United won every game Jones missed in 1990-1: the first 2 we won 7-2 (v Oldham) and 4-1 (Southampton). Talk about addition by subtraction.
