Gone Elsewhere Lee Novak

Not necessarily bothered about Novak as such, but between himself and Asoje they managed just short of 40 league goals last season. They've also brought in Ricky Holmes who scored about a dozen and got numerous assists in the division below, so it's disappointing that we're seemingly not in that market.

Don't let the facts get in the way, charlton ain't even signed Ajose

Didn't realise that Novak bears more than a passing resemblance to Ali G! Anyway, I'm a tad disappointed but its not clear that Wilder was definitely interested. Wilder must have known though yesterday when he was interviewed by Alan Biggs that Novak was on his way to Charlton. Wilder seemed to rate him but it seems that we've not made him our top target, based on Revel going to Northampton. I think part of the problem attracting a forward to United, is that anyone coming in knows they have to compete with Sharp, McNulty, Adams, DCL and Done. Any target man will only be a bit part player like Done and DCL will. Adams, McNulty and Sharp will be the main three I suspect. This means we're looking for someone to do the Chief's role. So it will probably be an experienced guy who is happy to sit on the bench and come on for the last 20 minutes. Saying that, I wouldn't be surprised for Wilder to go after James Collins who he had on loan last season at Northampton Town. He's 6.2ft and an out and out target man and he would no doubt relish the challenge of coming here. He isn't fancied by Shrewsbury for some unknown reason because he's always done well there. That's my guess anyway.

Lets remain positive and patient. We got two quality signings two weeks ago in Duffy and Hussey. With two decent centre backs, we'll be right up there next season, and Charlton might be spending but they had too, because their squad was nowhere near good enough bar a handful of talented individuals, but they didn't play as a team hence been relegated. I still fancy us over Charlton.

£800,000 fee agreed with Swindon. So I've perhaps jumped the gun slightly (I doubt they'll struggle to agree personal terms), but the point that I find it disappointing that we're not competing at their level - stands.

In 'General Blades Chat because........ ?

As far as I can see he never has been anything to do with us

It was covered in the Rumour section but hey ho. Wanted Novak over Revell but neither would have ousted the likely partnership of Adams and Sharp next season. A but part role probably doesn't appeal to Novak, whereas at Charlton he'll be starting. Next...!

Are we going to spit our dummies out every time a League 1 club makes a signing? Novak is at his very best an average League 1 striker and Charlton are welcome to him.
Based on the Sheffield Live interview we were strongly linked to Novak as we were Holmes.

So i guess Charlton have done it again in the sense they have signed 2 players we showed interest in.

I would not say it was " spitting the dummy out" more a slight worry we are not getting targets over the line

Whilst I have a very slight concern we aren't bringing many players of note in, I don't see Lee Novak as a particular leap forward. If he was still a championship player, he'd already be one. Hopefully we move onto other targets.

Now he's nailed on to bang in a few against us...

Folks....here's the thing we all need to get into our heads.

Our budget needs to be stretched to bring in more players than we have in a very long time.
Charlton don't....and will Therefore have more funds to get players that we may have been interested in...Holmes and maybe Novak being two.
I suspect our transfer committee didn't feel either players was worth what Charlton paid, or simply they wanted to go to Charlton.
There are plenty more players out there, we have to hope Wilder has lots of other options. And until we manage our expectations people are going to have over reactions to what are generally average players going to other clubs ahead of us.

A bit depressing that seeming targets are clearly choosing other clubs rather than us. And it's not just money that's causing them to do so. We can't even fall back on the "location" get-out, now that Novak's chosen Charlton.

Revell gone. Novak gone. Marquis never considered. Who'll we end end getting? It'll have to be an up-and-comer, surely?

To be fair it's not such an easy sell to join us if you are a striker.

Sharp has just been made captain and was the club's 20+ goal scorer.

It's unlikely any player whose profile we will be looking at will be expecting to push Sharp out of the reckoning.

You then have Adams who got 13 last year. McNulty who got 13 the previous year and had a reasonably fruitful season on the South Coast. You also have Done who was shifted around a bit last year but scored closer to 20 goals than 15 for two clubs the previous year.

All of these will expect to be in the match day squad. Only a player of a very different type is going to have a chance of breaking through. Given the fact that Novak is only 6ft and not 6ft2in to 6ft4in, I don't see him of being the type to be a game changer any more than one of the other players.

For that reason I'm not too bothered about him not arriving. Likewise, Revell is the wrong side of 30. Better to get a young lad who is a little raw but strong in my view and spend money elsewhere.

I'd be more concerned if Pierre, Nelson, McFadzean were all going elsewhere as these are the type who we would expect to be first team pillars as opposed to nice to have alternatives, which Novak would have been.

KEEP CALM AND BACK THE BLADES & WILDER'S ACUMEN. It is a 7 for 7 situation. Here's why :

this is the state of our 24 man squad (including , for the moment , the 7 transfer-listed rejects) :

4 starters - Billy Beard Duffy Hussey (4). So need first choice GK CB CB MF MF WING TARGET-MAN (7).

Good enough for matchday squad - Long Bash Whiteman Done Che Reed Scougs DCL McNuts (9).

Have never played for first team so not really in matchday squad - Ramsdale Brookes Kelly Semple (4).

That's 17 ....only seventeen acceptable players !
Plus the 7 rejects , makes 24.
So we need the 7 newbies TO START IN THE FIRST ELEVEN.
And each one of the 7 newbies must replace a reject , even if the reject has to be "paid-off" , by 6 August.

For every one of the 7 newbies that does NOT come , CW will have to include one of his 7 REJECTS in the 24.

That's Hammond , Woolford , Coutts , K.Wallace , J.Wallace , Freeman , DeGirolamo.

If that doesn't fill him (and me) with dread , nothing will. He doesn't want ANY of the rejects around on 6 August.

CW isn't stupid - he can't expect a performance befitting his "fast-running Blades" from players he's rejected.

There is huge pressure to get the 7 rejects out and 7 FIRST-TEAM newbies in. And I believe it will happen.

We know the rejects will be hard to shift. What the Board will ultimately have to do , is allow CW to recruit on the basis that the salaries of the rejects are NOT going to be on the books after 6 August.

I know McCabe is a clown , but ask yourself , is he really going to allow a cunt like Hammond or Woolford to tie the hands of his beloved CW ? I don't think so - he usually has more money than sense , but I have never previously heard him openly castigate greedy useless players. I think McCabe's dying to tell most of those 7 rejects to do one , even if it costs him a bit to pay them off.

With the Adkins/Clough wages policy , the 7 rejects are sitting on a big enough slice of the wage budget to fund high quality first team signings - as long as the Board dig deep for any transfer fees required.

Keep your knickers on, ladies and gents. For I have seen the future.

Our target man is on his way. You could say it's destiny.

We have seen this man before. He has walked amongst us.

It's time for the return of the chosen one. Remember the prophecy, fellow Blades;

'...and if he doth score, we shall invade the pitch'

It's time. The return is nigh.

Looking at the League One team of the season, very few like Mark Duffy will be playing for a League One team next season:

G - McLaughlin - in Championship with Burton
D - Wabara - in Championship with Wigan
D - Morgan - in Championship with Wigan
D - Egan - out of contract at Gills and negotiating a transfer to the Championship
D - Henry - contracted to Walsall, though followed by many top clubs
M - Wildschut - in Championship with Wigan
M - Sawyers - out of contract at Walsall
M - Dack - contracted to Gills. Though turned down 7 figure bid from Bristol in Jan
M - Duffy - signed for us.
F - Armstrong - in Championship with Newcastle
F - Grigg - on fire in the Championship with Wigan

We spoke about the desire to get the best. Isn't this what we have done? Flitcroft was also saying he thought our new left back and set piece specialist was the best left back in the division.

I'd rather be patient and end up with the best than rush and settle for slightly above average. Wouldn't you?

If we'd have signed Holmes, Ajose and Novak, the same people putting them down now would have been absolutely delighted and would have been singing Wilder's praises for picking up the best of the lower leagues. Should Duffy and Hussey have gone elsewhere, they'd also be talking those two down.

The ones saying we're not missing out are actually the ones spitting the dummy. Let's stop desperately looking for excuses to try and avoid the harsh truth and let's just accept the reality that other clubs are recruiting better than us at the moment.
