Oh and before anyone else picks up on it, Salmons fee was more like £170,000 - I think £800,000 would have been a transfer record at that time!
 
In a dug out made for 4 there is only the manager ,sub and trainer ,nowadays you have about 20 hangers on milling about in there.
 
I can see myself in that, celebrating Tony Field's 2nd v Ipswich at the front of the kop! I was just shy of 14 at the time. Thanks for this Walthamstow, some great memories.

Please do, they're really good. Some great stuff in there I've never seen before. Never realised how good a finisher Tony Field was, he's not mentioned much in the historical discussions. Tony Currie's goal against Leicester was better then the quality goal by a quality player.

Good point about Field. My dad watched this team and raves about Currie, Woodward, Eddy etc, but people like Field and Brown he is sort of ho hum about. In fairness, he was 24/25 and drinking like a fish so its amazing he remembers owt.

Another point about putting this video together is that I have a new appreciation for punk music. When I was searching for music to use for the end of this video I was looking through the UK album and singles charts for early 1975 and it was almost entirely utter shit. God bless the punks for rescuing us from that.

We used to stand next to the players tunnel on the Bramall Lane side. You can probably see the top of my head in a few of these clips.
The Ipswich game was about as good as it got for Field - don't remember him doing a lot else.

Always towards the kop end for us. As he started to dribble I jumped on the wall at the front and grabbed the white fence to get a better view, as he scored I raised my arms in triumph and fell off :oops:

Gracie scored about a dozen that season, I think. He never hit the heights of that goal.

He wasnt really that good but scored some vital goals. Yes, brilliant goal against Ipswich just like Wigley did against Blackburn. You may remember Wigley wasnt that good in many matches dont you?
 
Interesting you got footage of the 1-1 draw against Arsenal but didnt you get any for the 2nd half? Was the reason because of the poor picture quality due to poor floodlighting? Not seen these highlights since I saw them on YTV the day after the match. YTV highlights did show the brilliant save by Jimmy Rimmer from a Terry Nicholl shot in the last minute and it was one of the best I have ever seen, even better than his save from Keith Eddy late in the first half (shown in the video)

Possibly. Those highlights come from the full Big Match that covered that match and where the Arsenal match cuts off it goes straight back to Brian Moore in the studio. He prattles on about Arsenal so I cut it.
 
Great video,i was alive but in nappies,heard loads of this team and the talk is definitely true..........loved curries winner at goodison and woodys at spurs.

My goal of the season was the goal below. It was a pity the match wasnt on tv

GOAL - v West Ham (a) 7.9.74. This memorable goal is what I would describe as "the goal that defied science". My dad had driven down to my boarding school in Newbury for that day and took me and my three schoolmates to Upton Park to watch the match. Just before we got in the ground the gale-force wind blew a match ticket out of my dad's hand and he had to chase after it for about thirty yards. West Ham were leading 1-0 at half time and United faced playing against the strong wind for the second half and even if we had won a penalty it would be an almighty struggle to have enough power to shoot past the goalkeeper. Even now my Norwich-supporting mate would still recall the goal Woody scored in the match.
Here is what Benny Hill (not the comedian!) wrote in the Morning Telegraph two days later: “Long after Alan Woodward has finished his playing career, the fans will be talking about the goals he scored for Sheffield United; the spectacular, the face saving, the dramatic. Rarely it seems, is he involved in the run-of-the-mill goal. Invariably there are moments of drama when his power and skill combine to smash the ball into the net. At Upton Park he pulled one out of the hat to celebrate his birthday and put United level in the 78th minute; it was a wonderful example of his ability to read an opportunity and to do something positive as it comes. Intercepting a short pass from Holland just inside the West Ham half, Woodward streaked through the centre to slam the ball from 25 yards past a startled Day. John Lyall, the new West Ham manager, put the incident in a nutshell when he told me; “You can't give Woodward chances like that: he's too good a player.”
 
Some great stuff on this video.

I remember the Leicester game well. I must have seen the highlights the day after on Yorkshire TV but I had never seen them again from that day to this. Currie was absolutely on fire towards the end of that season - which made his missed sitter at Birmingham in the last game all the more surprising - and he makes that goal past Shilton look pretty effortless and routine.

Walth, have you footage of the Ipswich goal against us in that "Tony Field" game? I only ask because I have a fond memory of my dad absolutely cracking up laughing as he lipread Ted Hemsley swearing like a trooper at all and sundry in the immediate aftermath.

It's also good to see the full build-up to Woody's assist for the Tony Field goal against Arsenal. In his own half and picks up a mishit pass with a defender directly in front of him. It would have been understandable if he'd just got it under control and sized up his options but he immediately sees the opportunity, just like Benny Hill says, and takes his man on and is away. I don't think I fully appreciated at the time just how quick he could be. Because he was fairly stocky he didn't look particularly fast but he clearly was as this footage and plenty of other stuff from the archives demonstrates.
