george long contract delayed

Don't understand what's going on as he's too expensive to be a number two so if Wilder doesn't rate him highly enough to be number one we should let him go. Otherwise he's gonna take up a reasonable wage sat on the bench which is part of what got us into this mess in the first place !

Clearly we don't want him to go on a free but Wilder has twice seemingly set a deadline which has been extended both times.Maybe his agent knows he's going and wants us to release him so he can negotiate a signing on fee so is drawing the whole thing out as long as possible hoping we do just release him.

Not necessarily. His last contract can’t have been on big money as it was signed in 2014 after he’d fell behind Howard under Clough and was being loaned out to Oxford. The new offer only has to be on equal or better terms than the last one to entitle us to compensation. If he was on say £2k per week for example, we could offer him £2.5k to be our 2nd choice and if he rejects, we still get the compo. IF he stays, great, we have an OK keeper with the potential to be better than OK on sensible wages to compete with another incoming keeper.

So your boss comes to you and says, "Thanks for all you've done. You've contributed well to the company and I've noted how much you've applied yourself and the experience you've gained on the job will be an asset to us. So, what I'd like to offer you by way of thanks and as an incentive for you to stay with us is a reduced amount of money in line with how I want to manage my finances going forward"
Snatch his hand off George. A bright young first team goalkeeper like you, you'd be a mug to not accept a pay cut.

He won’t be offered a pay cut as that wouldn’t entitle us to compensation.

If only he'd done anything close to the first few sentences you mentioned.

I think he has done something like. He has contributed last season (probably somewhere between 2nd and 4th best player last season). He has applied himself to improve his game as he gained experience and he is an asset (hence us leaving the contract on the table so we get compo if he rejects).

He’s no world-beater but I’d say he’s all of those things.

If he's not going to be first choice then it's best for him to move on, and probably get more money to be someone else's backup. But with the amount of time this is taking maybe he doesn't have the other options he was rumoured to.

I don’t think it will be as black and white as that. He’s played a fair number of games now and has established himself as a league 1 GK. If we bring in another keeper he’s not automatically back up. It means he has to fight for his place which would be a good thing IMO. Whilst George and any new keeper are nowhere near the class of Kelly and Tracey, it would be great to get back to having a rivalry with 2 decent keepers competing for one spot.

I see it as politics. Wilder will not want him as first choice but the club will not want to lose out on some money for him. If Long signs then we have a decent number 2 on less wages, if he goes then we get some money for him.

Not long ago that everyone was shouting from the rooftops that he must be in the team....remember it vividly.

runner up in the player of the year too. If the rest of you had been offered a pay cut you would be on the city hall steps by now

Only because the alternative was even worst . That's why they were shouting from the rooftop . The other goalkeeper Howard needed to go to spec savers and a osteopath to sort his back out . Not even mentioned that Bennett fella who I don't think was a proper goally .

Other goalkeepers were playing for the U16

Best of a bad bunch our George at the time. Can the bloke save us a minimum of 12 points in a season is the question and are we confident with him.

I like George, nice kid by all accounts. However steep his progression curve is atm, he wouldn't be my choice. He more often than not requires as opposed to instills confidence. were desperate for a new solid back line, and a gaffer behind them.

he's every right to consider his future, he should. But whilst he's still croaky voiced and learning, he'd be my back-up and no way Jose be told he owns the No1 shirt.

Christ knows who's i'd enquire about tho :-)

I am sure that CW said in an interview yesterday that George has been offered "slightly better terms than last season", or did I dream that? The sticking point is not being guaranteed a starting place.

Well it now appears we are being dictated to by young mister long and his agent. If I was Wilder, i would be looking for a replacement as soon as possible.

I'm guessing he already is and he's been dictated to by no one.

We have to keep Long's offer open so that we get compo for him. It doesn't stop us signing another keeper.

May as well bang your head against a brick wall for the amount of times its been said already. But any chance to take a dig at the club, eh!?

Why is long dictating. Wasn't it a request for more time? If anyone is doing the dictating it's wilder. Sign this reduced contract with no guarentees I think was the offer...

Lets be frank,he's an ok keeper, but not worth holding ransom for.
If he wants to leave then fine,I won't be that bothered.

One question for the 'compo brigade' ....exactly how much compo do you think we will get for a goalie deemed to be a number two for a mid table third tier team and which teams are going to pay it ? If he's not good enough for us who is he good enough for and how much dosh do they have to spend on a keeper ?

Just asking as its looking like a very small likely marketplace and I doubt there's much of a queue !

Where on earth have you heard that it's reduced terms? You can't offer reduced terms or we're not entitled to any compo.

There are set prices in place for academy grown players of a certain age with appearances under their belt.

It can actually be a fairly long process, both clubs will argue how much they think said player is worth and then the committee will decide based on evidence given.

I think they work it out by age, how long the player has been at the club, what contract we've offered and how many first team appearences the player has made.

Also worth pointing out we won't get a lump sum, we'll get an initial amount and more based on how successful the player is at the next club (first team appearences etc) and maybe a % of profit if he is sold on.

Get it bloody signed, George. The contents of the ink pot have just about evaporated, & the quill pen's drooping so much it's almost unusable.

.

So he was initially offered more then it was reduced?

No wonder the kid's pissed off.

He's probably been offered what he's actually worth now by Wilder, instead of these over inflated salaries that some of these thieves took from us last season

Well done Wilder and just keep repeating the £500/week more promise to some of these wannabies and hopefully some will come to their senses

The days of having our pants down seem to be well and truly over

Long should be glad of the opportunity to start next season as first choice. Not sure Wilder has given him that much encouragement and maybe wants his Npton keeper or a.n.other lad from L1/L2.

In Long's situation he will know Wilder has a view on him, if not first hand then through his Blades contacts. Everybody knows Long has his faults and maybe his whole career depends on how he matures from hereon in. All that's in the lap of the gods or at least in Long's head - can he develop his game to dominate the six yard box and even to the penalty spot for crosses? He's nowhere near as yet, but he's young.

Would you start a promotion season with Long in goal? 50/50 perhaps. Nobody, not even Long is totally sure, but he needs to improve this side of Xmas. That's why he's offered less on his wages.

Such as Adams will be taking nothing for granted on their next contracts, that's for sure, not without a big contribution now, not just on potential, if it's there at all.

I doubr its reduced. We wouldn't be getting compensation if so.
Dictated to? Yes. Hes had the offer of a contract since before the end of the season. Hes now stalled signing on 2 occasions. He has chosen to look elsewere as hes entitled to do so. So for me. Thats sufc being dictated to by long and his agent.
