The journo who wrote this is a bit of a plank though, in what way is wilder "unsophisticated"? Just lazy writing as normal.

I think the journalist is confusing "sophistication" with 'airs and graces' and 'style'. Wilder talks like he has all his life and has not accumulated much polish in his spoken delivery. He also speaks in plain English, simple clear points clearly delivered without any flamboyance or embellishment for effect., no jargon or bullshit; Clough was very similar. Some managers get carried away with their public image and their media duties and become sickly egotists, e.g. McLaren.

Personally I respect people who remember their roots and don't acquire 'polish' like those who do just because they have a few bob and I know plenty who have done exactly that. They are not "sophisticated" but some have worked hard at that too in all fairness, maybe Wilder has,maybe not, but nobody can tell that in an interview apart from his comments about football, or is it more sophisticated to blind the audience with fancy and complicated tosh? Football's a simple game.

Good stuff from Monty. Agree with him apart from the comments about expectations. I think unmet expectations cause severe pressures on all those trying to turn things around and it's really hard. Actually I think 97% or so of our fans showed amazing patience and tolerance in both the Clough and Adkins eras, just like 97% of posters on here; more patience than the owners in fact! Perhaps the owners still have more expectations than us fans!!
