According to Chris Wilder:

3 centre backs
Central midfielder (preferably left-footed)
Target man

Told Long he couldn't guarantee him the no.1 spot so I'm guessing a new keeper!

Should be 2 CB's and 2 CM's.

We're equally lacking in both.

If we only sign one CM we'd have to start at least one of our existing poor players alongside him every match.

Simply someone who holds the ball up and brings the midfielders into play.
Get one found that can do both.

Phew! For a minute it was looking like you wouldn't be able to engineer a swipe at the club on a thread.

would have thought that, any team finishing above us this season could guarantee him no.1 spot. So the only way for him is, on the bench or 3rd choice in any team above 11th in league 1.

We ain't signing Tafazolli unless Wilder is blatantly lying.

I believe Macfadzean is his main target and Pierre the other. That would give us a blend of higher level experience and the best centre half in division two.

For the centre midfield role with a preference being a left footer I'd be looking at John Fleck. My preference for the 'target man' striker is still James Hanson so I hope those rumours do have some truth to them.

I'd say Fleck is a very likely target given Wilder's comments.

Decent player. Coventry's player of the season.

Oh yes they are.
Basham is a great tackler and always give hundred percent , scougall is fast and he is good at winning the ball back quickly after we have lost it and reed has potential and is a good passer . Only reason ur saying there shit is because both bash and scougall have been getting played out of position and reed didn't get a chance Jeff Adkins

Meant under no idea how Jeff got put

Scougall , basham and Reed aren't exactly terrible

Scougal is totally ineffective, Reed is ineffective and Basham is average, in L1.

They've proven this over the last 2 seasons ........

We now need to raise the bar significantly IF we seriously wish to compete for promotion .......

UTB & FTP

When clough first came in we played attacking football and scougall ripped teams apart . They've been innefective last two seasons because we have been playing defensively in clough a second season and Adkins how do u think they both got called negative Nigel

Sorry to be a bit pedantic, but when Clough came in we played COUNTER attacking football because he had to. He then reverted to a style he was known for and that was when the negative Nigel name returned. He was previously known as both non league Nigel and Negative Nigel I believe. I don't think Nigel Adkins was known as negative Nigel, there were far better descriptive words used, but I think that with what he ended up with he really had to have a solid bank of four in midfield and however pedestrian that was, he couldn't afford a lightweight runner to get out of position with the style he had to play.

Let's see the style before we decide who can fit in or not. Much as I like Scougal and admire Reed's vision, their obvious physical frailties are a disadvantage in this type of league.

Maybe you should wait to see how Reed returns preseason. He is still only 18 and continuing to fill out, He also had a season where his development was put on hold by a management team that only had a pathway for 6ft youth players, whilst refusing to allow him out on loan or to play with the 21's to further his footballing education.

Quite agree. Not writing the lad off. Don't think he's going to grow but he may get stronger. Be interesting to see him along side someone who is always available as an outlet and is physically strong.

Basham has achieved hero status with some fans because he has stood out for the effort he puts in when playing amongst a pile of lazy or injury-carrying dross.
He is hard to dislike - a nice chap who is tall , which we perceive as an advantage - but does he use his physique ?
To me , Basham is a "nearly-man" , who could do so much better.
He is definitely NOT an adventurous creative midfielder , he's NEVER going to run with the ball , or split a defence with a pass , or shoot & score , or have a sudden moment of invention and set a an attack going in an unexpected way. There is just nothing in him which frightens other teams when he's in possession.
In defensive mode he is reasonably capable , but can make mistakes and get done for pace. He's not an assertive tackler who "puts himself about". In fact , in midfield I can't really say what he is.
With CW saying that his m/f men need both aspects to their game (they can't be just an offensive or defensive midfielder) , I cannot see CW playing him in m/f , IF he signs his m/f targets this summer.
To me , Basham has been kept as "insurance" , in case CW falls short of signing his desired m/f (OR C/B).
Basham is not a first team player in a top 2 side.

As short arses , Scougall & Reed would need to be a lot "tougher" to make an impact in League 1 football.

Off the top of my head , Dave Mackay , Billy Bremner , Peter Reid , David Batty , Gordan Cowans , Stuart McCall all demonstrate that a small midfielder can be effective with sufficient talent & toughness.

Scougall & Reed haven't convinced me yet .............. but CW is giving them a bit more time to up their game , whilst he is under budgetry constraint.

However , if CW can get Hammond & Woolford off the wage-bill , they will be toast.

Reed can pick a pass. He is only 18 so will surely improve. He will also look better when there is (hopefully) greater movement in the team both up front and wide. It is the forwards movement that decides the midfielders pass if there is none Reed can only go sideways. I do think if Reed plays though we must have 5 in the midfield.

I always think a decent target man is one that leads the line effectively, decent hold up play so the ball sticks and doesn't go straight back, linking in the other forwards, wide players, and midfield players, winning the aerial stuff. If he does all that and chips in with a dozen goals in a season, then that's fine as far as I'm concerned. Shipperley did all that in the promotion season and (off the top of my head) scored 11 league goals.

As for Basham, for centre mid I don't think he gives the team enough. He's in a really key position there, where a team needs driving from but for me he doesn't have that drive, grit, leadership, whatever you want to call it, to really dominate. I think Basham could have a key role next season as a utility player, filling in (for injuries, suspensions, loss of form, etc) at centre mid, centre half, and even right back. I'd expect he'd play around (and no more than) 20-25 games next season if we are going to be successful.
