Bramall Lane in 1868...

bramall.jpeg

Is that a pub on John Street or McCabe's grandad's first foray into property management renting out the top floor for cricket matches?

On this topic, does anyone know how serious the plans were to move SUFC to a purpose built ground in the 60/70's? In the centenary book this was said to be around the Dyche Lane area? Norton?

Simon Inglis' excellent Football Grounds of England and Wales/Great Britain books document the changes to the ground. There are 3 editions, the most recent one being 1996.

Inglis' book "Engineering Archie" has a couple of pages on the John Street stand, which was the first Leitch designed first football stand built outside Scotland.

The Clarebrough/Kirkham books have various things in them about the development of the ground too.

The shot that hit the net and rebounded out was Glen Cockerill's v Grimsby in 1984-5. It was at the Bramall Lane end. The stanchion arrangement may have been changed because of this.
that was the goal Nigel Batch was their keeper remember his inter view after the game when he said first time he'd had a win bonus for a draw

its another pavillion/stand on John Street isn't it? the illustration comes from a souvenir celebrating 100 years of Cricket at BDTBL, its knocking about here somewhere.

Bramall+Lane.jpg

I thought these drawings might explain it - but they don't, they're from 1882 apparently.

btw...The atmosphere was electric in the Lonsdale, Intake (Don) watching Liverpool get thumped by Seville tonight. It was electric due to all the static from the full kit plastic scousers rubbing their nylon shirts, shorts and socks against each other when they scored their consolation goal! deep joy......

I don't think the top picture is John Street VB..looks more like looking out to where the pavillion was on Cherry Street..more an earlier design of the pavillion for me.

Aye, top pic is the old pavilion seen from John St, bottom pic is John Street seen from the old pavilion.

Looking at the old videos Walthy has posted got me thinking with the passage of time. We tend to get focussed on teams but as you get older I find it is changes to the ground that accelerate the process, particularly looking at the old photos and camera shots.

4. Stanchions. I think we went from the black/grey crossbar to bottom of the net stanchions to the paperclip/ hoop type (top of crossbar to uprights). Any idea when this was?

Vaguely remember that it might have been as a result of some goal that wasn't given when the ball hit the stanchion and rebounded into play and booted out for a corner or something involving Chelsea or Watford (somebody non descript anyway :)) and there was a right uproar about it.

This is the famous one I remember. Clive Allen for Crystal Palace v Coventry

Alan Hudson for Chelsea against Ipswich in Sept 1970. Ron Capey was the ref

Brittania Brewery - One of the two breweries by the ground that, allegedly Yorkshire had call upon to chuck out as much muck as possible to get play stopped for bad light if they were having a bad day. I believe the other was the Anchor Brewery which was bombed out in WW2 and merged with Hope Brewery to become the Hope and Anchor brewery on Claywheels Lane.

I think it was RAF, not the flying corps. Wasn't it RAF Norton?
probably :).. there was an RFC base up at Norton at some point as my great grandmother worked there.. edit: yeah it is listed as Coal Aston..
i think the Lightwood site was a balloon barrage

I used to love the giant floodlights. Was proper gutted when they went, ah well technology marches on and all that. I still miss them.

Remember being on the old 42 or 53 buses from Lowedges and travelling on Chesterfield Road, just past Woodside brickyard, round the corner toward Meersbrook and the floodlights would come into view. Going to BDTBL for a night match was one of my best memories.

bramallane1902test.jpg

Taken at the Third Test 1902 England v Australia, Bramall Lane. "A lot of cricket commentators especially those from the south were unhappy about the selection of Bramall Lane for the Test in the first place. There was no dispute about the ground or the wicket but there was many barbed comments made with regard to the light. A curious feature about the ground at this time is that it was not unknown for bad light to stop play on an otherwise sunny day such was the level of smoke and pollution from Sheffield's heavy industries. In fact the bad light was held to be partly responsible for England's defeat in the match."

Anyone got photos of Billposters advertising Blades home games in the late 1960s and early 1970s that used to be on the the walls on Bramall Lane and Shoreham Street also on the advertising hoardings near where Homebase at the top of Meersbrook is now?

There used to be ones just the same for Wednesday, but not of course near Bramall Lane. They just used to paste on the name of the next opponents and date at the bottom.

Wendy posters were on that advertising hoardings near Homebase too also on the advertising space opposite where Ponsford (near Heeley Bridge) is now and on hoardings in Penistone Road

As an Ecclesfeldian Bert remembers the Penistone Rd one and there was also one next to Bert's Junior school on High Street, Ecclesfield.
