Ultimately when a company is underperforming the man at the top is to blame.

It's not too difficult to spot a poster who writes sense.

True, but most companies' success doesn't revolve around the vagaries of a spinning ball.

People say that McCabe's chairmanship is the one constant factor in our decline. But they forget that he presided over a revival before that, that took us up to the PL, competing with and beating teams like Arsenal and Spurs.

If McCabe is such a shit Chairman, how on earth did he take us up to the PL?

You can't say he was lucky then, but claim that our decline is due solely to his mismanagement

Virtually every decision McCabe has made has, at the time, been greeted positively by fans. Even the appointments of Robson and Weir were seen as a great coups at the time.

I assume that you were in a hot tub full of turps with Robson when his appointment was announced then because, as I recall, very few were impressed by the appointment of a bloke who the Pigs had just told to fuck off.

Chairman appoints a manager who succeeds... Successful.
Chairman who appoints a manager who fails... Failure.

Chairman places trust in the man he appoints, trusts in his transfer policy by providing finances.

Chairman who take on a football club... Ultimately need sectioning.

Chairman who takes on a football club for £1 then sells for £xxmillion ... Crook?

Chairman who throws money at a club on the belief that this will guarantee success... From Thailand?

Because with respect, people don't like getting preached to about the club by someone who isn't even a supporter of the club. I don't think many of the Saints fans would appreciate a Blade going on their forum and doing the same.

Aww, and here I was thinking you'd got me on ignore!

Getting outside opinions and views on things can never be a bad thing, and he was hardly preaching. He corrected a post and gave his opinion, that was it.

Maybe so. I'd certainly like us having more of a vision in place, & a sustainable template (meaning, like Swansea or West Brom, that we could lose a manager & slot another one in pretty seamlessly without it causing great difficulties). But, even so, we need the right manager regardless, to galvanize us & get us rolling, just like every other underachieving club (or treading-water club) does. Perhaps West Brom are the ideal club in terms of sustainability? In honesty, who knows where Swansea or Bournemouth will be in 5 years time? Or, for that matter, whether yourselves or Leicester can maintain current lofty positions?

Just going back to those clubs you mentioned earlier when you asked "why are the likes of Stoke, West Brom, Swansea in the Prem, while SUFC are stuck in the Third Division waiting for the right manager to appear?", it does seem that having that "right fit" manager to start it all off is key - especially in Stoke's case with Pulis. There's plenty of big clubs wallowing in the Championship, even getting overtaken by more dynamic clubs on the rise (like Bournemouth, Hull, Swansea*). Loads more too on the slide into oblivion (like Blackpool). What each & every one of those clubs would do for a "right fit" manager?

(* All of whom had their own special managers who galvanized their clubs & got them shooting upwards - Howe, Brown, Jackett/Martinez)
We had Warnock. He should have been the 'catalyst', our equivalent of Megson at West Brom.

The reason McCabe sacks the manager is because he's ambitious and won't rest until we're back in the PL. Also lets be fair the morale and feedback from the crowd after the Scunthorpe match made NA position untenable..

So which idiot recruits these serial failures if he is so ambitious? Can't be him right?

That's Micky Adams

...who only had about half a season before he was sacked.

Yes, we played crap, and he couldn't halt relegation. But exactly the same happened with Bassett in his first half-season in charge. He was appointed in January and we were relegated. However, our Chairman at the time (forgot whether it was Brearly or MacDonald) didn't sack him, and we went straight back up.

I wonder whether we'd have spent the next six years in league one if we'd allowed Adams to stay.

While I like Wilder and wish him all the best, his record isn't any better than Adams' was at the time of his appointment. Both were coming off the back of successes at lower league teams, both are Blades fans, and both are seen as down to earth, no nonsense characters who can work on a budget. As we've already tried "Warnock lite" in the form of Adams, my money was on an exotic foreign manager this time around.

If Wilder fails this season, he's almost guaranteed his P45 next May. If that happens, it may be time to get the phrase books out.

I don't think there's any argument about Kev being a fan or not wanting the best for the club.

  • He never takes responsibility for his failings
  • He makes promises to appease fans and then comes up with excuses or just ignores what he's said previously
  • There's no coherent long-term fan. He's invested heavily in the Academy which is great but there's been nothing in place to have a consistent approach throughout the club or the fabled 'pathway'. There's no plan.
  • He can't see the bigger picture. He expects that if he invest x he will be automatically rewarded with success. Then looks puzzled when we're not.
We messed up massively when we sold the Kyles and failed to use the money wisely to ensure that their development wasn't a one-off

The Saints' success I believe can be traced back to the importance which they've put on youth development for many years. Even when they were languishing at lower levels they prioritised this, and despite being a selling club for years, they eventually put themselves in a position where they could capitalise on this, re-investing wisely.

It'll be time to get the owner out, somehow.
